21、During a career planning class, Brenda Fabian asked how many students use Facebook, a popular online networking community for college students. Almost everyone in the room raised a hand.“Then I asked how many knew that employers are reviewing Facebook for hiring purposes,”says Fabian, director for Center for Career Services at Susquehanna University.“No hands were raised, and their faces revealed the students' surprise.”
Although some parents do keep track of their teen's online activities, most teenagers don't realize that websites may be monitored by schools, prospective(未来的) employers or anyone else who might be interested in the teenager's lifestyle not just today but anytime in the future.
Most of us don't realize that the information that gets posted on the Internet may be deleted, but it doesn't disappear permanently.“The stuff is there forever,”says Jamie Riehle, director of Web Publishing at Lycos.“It is backed up (备份) on servers and doesn't go away.”
As company recruiters, college admission officers, law enforcement personnel and parents become more Web savvy (有见识的),it becomes even more vital for teenagers to be cautious when posting any information on their websites. Even though sites that are private can be seen only by a preselected list of friends, there are companies that, for a fee,can dig deeper into cyberspace(网络空间) and find anything. Even government officials who thought that deleting email would exonerate(宣布……无罪) them from wrongdoing are discovering that,on the Web,there is no such thing as private or gone forever.
Steven Rothenberg, president and founder of College-Recruiter.com,suggests that teenagers think of their Web posts as tattoos(纹身). “Inherently(内在地),there is nothing wrong with them if they are private,”he says.“But if they are visible or offensive, it can affect the way others see you.”

22、Mamoudou Gassama, a Malian migrant, won widespread praise after climbing the outside of the building to save a four-year-old boy hanging from a balcony in Paris. Now he is to be made a French citizen.
Video showed him being cheered on by spectators as he pulled himself from balcony to balcony to the fourth floor.
After meeting him at the Elysee Palace, President Emmanuel Macron said he would be made a naturalized citizen. He personally thanked Mr Gassama, gave him a medal for courage and said he would also be offered a position in the fire service.
The heroic story unfolded on Saturday evening on a street in the north of the city. Mr Gassama said he had been walking past when he saw a crowd gathered in front of the building.
He told Mr Macron: “I just didn’t have time to think. I ran across the road to go and save him. I climbed up and thank God, God helped me. The more I climbed, the more I had the courage to climb up higher.”
He said that the boy was crying when he pulled him to safety and had also suffered an injured foot.
Firefighters arrived to find the child had already been rescued.
“Luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child,” a spokesperson said.
Local authorities quoted by French media said the boy’s parents were not at home at the time. The father has been questioned by police for leaving his child unattended.
The boy’s father was arrested and told police he had left his son alone to go shopping and returned home later than planned because he was playing Pokemon Go, an enhanced reality game, on his smart phone.
And the mother was not in Paris at the time.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo was among those to praise the 22-year-old’s heroism and said she had called him to thank him.
She described him as the “Spiderman of the 18th”, calling him an “example for all citizens”.

23、The word hobby has an interesting history, and so does the concept of the hobby itself. Cultural attitudes have changed greatly about which ones are worth pursuing, and indeed whether having a hobby is desirable at all.
It is probably safe to say that when hobby was first used in the 15th century, most people didn’t have one, as it referred to a particular kind of horse. A hobby was a small horse that could “amble”(漫步), a particularly smooth, quick gait(步态)that was prized for long rides over terrible roads. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word is a shortened form of Hobbin, the name for a cart-horse, like Rover for a dog.
The hobby also had a part in medieval folk celebrations. Mummers and Morris dancers often included a person or two dressed up in horse costume, or pretending to ride a wooden stick with a horse’s head. Such hobbyhorses made popular children’s toys, too. Since hobbyhorses were the toys of young children and mime actors, “riding one’s hobby-horse” or being “on one’s hobby” became an idiom for wildly pursuing an idea or activity that looks silly to others.
Hobbies were considered slightly embarrassing, though mostly harmless, through the 18th century. In the 19th century, they grew more socially acceptable as middle-class leisure time increased. It became de rigueur for both men and women to pursue activities that would have seemed strange or shallow a century before.
In the early 20th century, according to historian Steven Gelber, hobbies “got rid of the old stigma of eccentricity(古怪的旧污名)” and came to be seen as a way to fill life with meaning and dignity. With a hobby, people could choose their own goals and progress toward them.

24、Today’s demands for measuring childhood success have chased household chores from the to-do lists of many young people. In a survey of 1,001 US adults released by Braun Research, 82% reported having regular chores growing up, but only 28% said that they require their own children to do them. “Parents today want their kids spending time on things that can bring them success, but ironically, we’ve stopped doing one thing that’s actually been a proven predictor of success—and that’s household chores.” says Richard Rende, a developmental psychologist.
Giving children household chores at an early age helps to build a lasting sense of mastery, responsibility and independence, according to research by Marty Rossmann, professor at the University of Minnesota. In 2002, Dr. Rossmann analyzed data from a longitudinal(纵向的) study that followed 84 children across four periods. She found that young adults who began chores at ages 3 and 4 were more likely to have good relationships with family and friends and to achieve academic and early career success, as compared with those who didn’t have chores or who started them as teens.
Chores also teach children how to be empathetic(感同身受的) and responsive to others’ needs, notes psychologist Richard Weissbourd. In research, his team surveyed 10,000 high-school students and asked them to rank what they treasured more: achievement, happiness or caring for others. Almost 80% chose either achievement or happiness over caring for others. As he points out, however, research suggests that personal happiness comes most reliably not from high achievement but from strong relationships. “We’re out of balance,” says Dr. Weissbourd. A good way to start re-adjusting priorities(优先事项), he suggests, is by learning to be kind and helpful at home.
The next time that your child asks to skip chores to do homework, resist the urge to let him or her off the hook. Being slack(懈怠的) about chores when they compete with school sends your child the message that grades and achievement are more important than caring about others. What may seem like small messages in the moment but add up to big ones over time.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emily White came to the world 17 years ago, with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens-her music teacher-to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral (合唱的) room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Kind of nervous as she was, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times.
She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted.
By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.
