21、 Peter Drucker is the world’s most influential management master. Probably more than anyone else, he has helped to determine the nature of management and the tasks and responsibilities of the manager.
Drucker’s interests have ranged broadly. In the 1930s and the 1940s, he wrote a series of thoughtful books on capitalist society. From the 1950s to the 1970s, he wrote a series of books on management. Since the late 1970s, he has been more interested in the impact of technological and social change on management and business.
Drucker’s writings avoid formal theories of management and organization and instead encourage managers to ask basic questions. Famously, he urged managers to stop trying to manage processes and instead seek to manage for results, emphasizing output rather than function. In his view, managers should be the pivot around which the organization works, rather than directors controlling from the top down or officers leading from the front.
According to Drucker, it is the manager who breathes life into the enterprise and makes it function. “The enterprise can decide, act and behave only as its managers do.”
In a milestone passage, Drucker says that there is only one valid purpose for a business:“To create a customer. Markets are not created by nature or economic forces, but by the people who manage a business.” Drucker emphasizes the need to consider the needs and motivations of customers, not just the problems of price and distribution that had formerly controlled marketing.
He also stresses the responsibilities of managers: to achieve economic performance, to make work productive and to manage the social effects that any enterprise has on its environment. Particularly important is the third set of responsibilities. Increased social responsibility, says Drucker, is part of the price that must be paid for commercial success.
Drucker sees management as an art rather than a science and constantly speaks of management in human terms, which has made him the most popular and widely read management writer of all time.

22、 Growing up in Arizona’s rodeo (竞技) country, I was familiar with the events that come with traveling rodeos: bull riding, dressing and mutton busting. Mutton busting is like bull riding, but instead of bulls, they use sheep. And in place of the men, it’s children between six and ten years old who try to hang on for eight seconds.
It took me all of five minutes to say yes to the idea of riding a sheep. Being seven years old, my decision-making ability was pretty limited. I figured I could ride a sheep as well as the next kid. Little did I know that I was in for a world of pain and embarrassment.
My nerves were shaking the day of the rodeo. I hated being in front of crowds. I didn’t like getting dirty; I didn’t even like sheep, which I thought of as just dirty and smelly. Yet there I was, getting ready to ride one for eight seconds in front of hundreds of people. I wanted to run out of the field and hide in the hot car until it was over. But by the time this idea occurred to me, it was too late. I was lifted away from my mother by a rodeo trainer and placed onto a platform.
My feet went into the narrow pen (羊圈) first. I felt my shoes touch the dirty floor of the pen. Once I was balanced on the top of the sheep, the trainer let go and told me to lean forward. I did as he said. I could feel the animal’s heart beating faster than mine. I realized that the poor sheep was even more frightened than I was.
Then the gate opened, and I quickly discovered that my hold was too weak. Within three seconds I had fallen off the sheep, and found myself face-down on the sun-baked earth. The sheep thought this was its time to take revenge (复仇), and attacked me from behind. There I lay, hat down, covered in dirt, with tears streaming down my face. I looked behind me to see my mother running to comfort me. “Stand up and show them you’re okay,” she told me as she wiped the dirty tears from my face. I stood up, dirty and upset, waved my little hand, and walked out with my mother.
Sadly, I didn’t win anything, not even the respect of these rodeo animals. I did find a new admiration for those little balls of wool, though.
【1】Which of the following is TRUE about “mutton busting”?
A.It is a dirty and terrible game. B.Only strong adults can ride a sheep.
C.It is intended to pick the fastest sheep. D.It’s a game for 6-to-10-year-old children.

A.Why the author lost the competition.
B.Why a mother should comfort her child.

23、What exactly is the importance of teachers in the current educational landscape? The last few years have witnessed the rise of education technology and online tutoring firms. 【1】 Such people, however, have completely ignored the one thing that makes studying in a proper classroom irreplaceable and that is the importance of teachers.
The internet has more information about any given topic than any one person can ever hope to possess. 【2】 Knowing that ‘tomato is a fruit’ is information, and not putting it in a fruit salad is wisdom. This example does a perfect job in illustrating just how important wisdom is in the day to day life. Books and the internet can give you information, but only a teacher can pass on wisdom. 【3】
Understanding the reason for the poor performance of a particular child and helping them overcome their weakness while also pushing the top performers to do better are things only a teacher can do.
You can develop the most amazing online tutoring platform and fill it with amazing and interesting videos but it is never enough. 【4】 But videos are made for a general audience. They can hardly be sufficient for the problems that students face in their life outside the classroom. Only teachers who have spent time with their students can guide the students in a way that can help them figure a way out of any problem they might be facing in their life.
【5】 While the list of reasons stating the importance of teachers is a bit too long to put in a single article, these two are sufficient to silence anyone who believes that going to school to be taught by proper teachers will soon become obsolete.
A.Wisdom, however, is something that it badly lacks.
B.Every single student is unique in his or her own way.
C.Teachers are also important in shaping the future of the youth.
D.On this point, the importance of teachers should never be understated.
E.Everything people can possibly learn is freely available on the internet.
F.Many argue that they might one day completely replace formal schooling.
G.These are just two ways that teachers have a massive impact on their students.
