四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Chen Liang, a boy in Shanghai, has always been interested in wild animals, especially polar bears. When he was a fourth grader, he was asked to make a project about how climate change (气候变化) influenced his favorite animal. When doing his research online, instead of getting information about the polar bear, he found stories about Finkbeiner—a German boy who had been calling on children around the world to help slow the Earth’s warming by planting trees on the planet.

“People know the environmental problems and they talk so much about the solutions. But we don’t know why there is little action. Perhaps we have to depend on ourselves to save our future.” Finkbeiner, said at UNGA (the United Nations General Assembly 联合国大会). Finkbeiner also introduced that he started a group called “Plant-for-the-Planet”. It had planted over 14 billion trees in more than 130 countries.

After knowing this, Chen Liang made a decision: to join the group, and to plant 1000 trees in China by himself. He talked about it with his schoolmates and his head teacher. They disregarded his words, but the boy remembered his goal. Two months later, when other schoolmates forgot what he had said, Chen Liang had successfully planted his first tree, an orange tree, near the front door of his school. His action showed that he was serious.

Now Chen Liang is a ninth grade student. He is busier with his study; but he doesn’t forget his words. He has planted 397 trees in Shanghai, Xinjiang and other places across from China. Those trees could take in tons of CO2 every year. “What I have done has made many of my schoolmates pay attention to the environmental problem. We are not just talking about it. We not only plant more trees, but also make videos online to let more people see us. Let’s take action together!” Chen Liang is so proud.

  • 26、Have you ever met large chances in life and work? How would you feel in most cases? In fact, we all have to go through the grief cycle (悲伤周期) which has the following periods.

The first period: “It can’t be happening.”

Anger: “Why me? It’s not fair.”

Depression (抑都): “I’m so sad. Why do I have to do all of these?”

Acceptance (接受): “It’s going to be OK.”

I’m honestly not sure how scientific this model is, but recently believe that you will work better after going through these major changes.

Find out what your anger does for you — good or bad?

What does being angry do for you? Think back to the situation where you have been angry at work and ask yourself how it influences you, including: your relationship with co-workers, the quality (质量) of your work and health, how you feel outside of work, your relationship with friends and family.

Find out what makes you angrier and less angry.

What makes you angrier? Which thoughts, situations, people or conversations set you off? And what makes you less angry? I’m sure you are not angry all the time. What makes you calm and stops you from feeling angry? Find out. Then start doing less of what makes you angry and more of the things that cool you down.

    Focus on gratitude.

What are you grateful for? As I mentioned above, anger is part of the grief cycle which is connected with what you lose. Gratitude is the opposite of loss because it comes from the good things you have in your life. It’s simple. Every evening, sit down with a piece of paper and make two gratitude lists: three things I was grateful for at work today; three things I was thankful for in life today.

Change your focus from “What was done to me” to “What I can do”.

I know this is the basic piece of all self-help advice. Life is 10% about what happens to you and 90% about how you deal with it, or you must take responsibility for your own situation, rather than be a victim (牺牲品) of it. That kind of advice can get pretty boring. But that doesn’t make it less true.

【1】Why does the writer begin the text by asking questions?

    A.To explain facts.

    B.To express disagreement.

    C.To give opinions.

    D.To catch the readers’ interest.

【2】What’s the writer’s suggestion about dealing with anger?

    A.Love friends and family.

B.Do things that make you peaceful.

    C.Be friendly to co-workers

D.Write down what makes you angry.

【3】What does the underlined word “gratitude” most probably mean?

    A.Thanks.

    B.Safety.

    C.Courage.

    D.Pride.

【4】Which of the following best describes the last piece of advice?

    A.Creative.

    B.Special.

    C.Useful.

    D.Useless.

  • 27、Geoffrey Payne talks for the first time about the night his wife was killed. The judge thought it was he who killed his wife. Now he wrote to a magazine from the prison (监狱) about what happened on the night of 13 October 1999.

I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I finally left at about 11 p. m. I drove home slowly because the weather was terrible—the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily,  I was turning into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car. I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was frightened and the man looked frightened too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was very strange.

When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.

I was still very upset about what happened on the road, so I made myself a drink. Then I went upstairs to have a bath. I saw that the window in the bedroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars. When I went to close it, I found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. I rushed over and felt for her pulse but she was dead. I sat on the floor beside her body and was too frightened to do anything.

The next thing I knew, the sky was getting light. I can't remember a thing about that night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived about half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like hours. During that time I tried hard to remember anything I could about the night before. I couldn't stop thinking about the man in the road. What was he doing at that time of night in our quiet neighbourhood? Why did he look so frightened"! Why did he run away?
