25、 An Unforgettable Day
I had mixed feelings today, nervous, worried, happy, excited...My heart went down when Miss Chen, our head teacher, said that Matthew and Beth, two students from England, would spend three months with us! I was worried that I had to speak English so much! But at the end of the school day, I was happier than I thought because the morning with them today was more enjoyable than I expected.
Today is the most unforgettable first day I have had! Matthew is fantastic! His English is clearer and easier to listen to than I thought. The other English student, Beth, is the most helpful girl I've ever met. There were lots of things to do on the first day. Beth offered to help Miss Chen put up all the notices. Of course, some of the credit(功劳)should also go to ME because I translated(翻译) some of the notices for her. Miss Chen praised us!
We finished all the preparations 10 minutes earlier than expected, then Beth and I talked for a while. Matthew sang several English songs and did some stand-up comedy at the party. We all praised him. When the bell rang to end the first school day, none of us wanted to leave.
When I went back home, I had a little headache. I have probably spoken more English today than the whole of last year.
It was really a happy day! I hope our friendship can continue, even after they go back to England!

26、Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.
When Mary was in hospital with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard, who worked for a business company, expected to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her job.
They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry(产业). “We knew it had to be a specialty(专业) store because we couldn’t afford enough money,” says Mary. One idea came to her: She’d read somewhere that about 20 percent of books sold were mysteries, and many buyers spent more $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers.
On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Café near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family’s money to start a shop. To pay the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from friends and from an bank.
The store only broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract(吸引) buyers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and provided dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited some writers to discuss their stories.
Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales workers, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.
“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income(收入)” says Richard. “This has always been about a pleasant life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”

27、We have always been interested in the moon. 2, 000 years ago, people already knew it moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on the earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity (重力) millions of years earlier.
In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 billion years ago, something about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.
【1】Before 1969, most scientists thought the moon was ________.
A.part of the earth billions of years earlier
B.older than the earth
C.caught by the earth’s gravity
D.made of the same things as the earth
【2】What do most scientists think now about the moon and the earth?
A.The earth was once part of the moon.
B.The moon used to be part of the earth.
C.Mars will hit earth in the near future.
D.Rocks will join together to become another moon.
【3】We can learn that ________ from this passage.
A.new information brings new ideas
B.scientists in the past were not clever
C.we now know everything about the moon
D.scientists are so clever that they know everything
28、请用适当的词完成下面的短文, 并把所缺单词坡写在指定位置上。每个空格只能填写一个形式正确、意义相符的单词。
You have probably dreamed about how you would change the world, only to find that it seems impossible. However, you may have the power to make 【1】 world better with baby steps. That's the idea behind the BA Challenge.
The BA Challenge is a public service activity started 【2】 Alibaba and Sina Weibo. It asks people 【3】 do something good and then record the changes before and after. Since its first appearance on Sina Weibo on Sept. 2, millions of people, including some famous stars, have taken 【4】 in it. For example, Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming sent mooncakes to old people 【5】 live alone. The young actor Xu Weizhou drew some trees in the desert, trying to show that working to 【6】 the environment can give us hope.
Though these little things may be easily ignored (忽视)in our daily 【7】, they strike a chord with many people. “The challenge makes me 【8】 in the miracle(奇迹)good actions again.” wrote a commenter(评论家)on Sina Weibo. “Though they are unimportant to one single person, they actually have a great impact on making the world 【9】 if we all do that.”
As the old Chinese saying goes, “Do not fail to do good even if it's small, do not engage in evil 【10】 if it's small.” Why don't we all set smaller goals? Then we may change the world slowly but surely, as a river changes a mountain.
29、Do you know that overnight success usually takes at least 10 years? One man said, “My overnight success was the ______ night of my life. I spent many days and nights just getting there! Rome was not built in a day.” Many people are waiting for their ship to come in when they’ve not even ______ it out of the harbor. You see, winners ______ do what losers don’t want to do. And they keep doing it till they get the success. Success is mostly just hanging on after others have let go! So the most important trip you’ll ever make is when you go the ______ mile.
One guy said, “The secret to success is to start from zero and to keep on trying.” Don’t give up trying just ______ your trying times are many. The great inventor, Thomas Edison, tried a certain experiment hundreds of times, but didn’t work. So his assistant said to him, “It’s too bad that we did all that work without any results.” But Edison said, “Oh, we have lots of ______! We now know 700 things that won’t work.”
We can complete almost anything we want ______ we hold on. And the American President Calvin Coolidge said, “Nothing can bring success ______ persistence (坚持). Talent cannot, for there are many talented people who are not successful. Education will not, for the world is full of educated losers. Only persistence and determination (决心) can give you the ______ to succeed.” You see, you can succeed just like anyone else, just keep wanting it enough and to keep ______ for it enough. So why not decide it today to start going the extra mile on the road to your success?
