24、 Kwanzaa is a celebration of African American history and culture. It begins on December 26th and continues until New Year's Day, January 1st.
During the festival, a family member, usually the youngest child, lights candles in a special candle holder. Each night a candle is lit. Traditionally there are three green candles, three red candles and a central black candle. They represent the seven Kwanzaa principles (原则). The principles are believed to play a big role in building strong, successful families, neighborhoods, etc. In the evenings, adults share stories and explain how to follow the seven principles in daily life. On the sixth day, which falls on New Year's Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large meal.
Kyle, a third grader, wrote this about Kwanzaa, “When we celebrate Kwanzaa, we have many people at home, light the candles, and have a nice dinner. We learn the meaning of Kwanzaa and remember family members. We say something good about them. Last year, we remembered my grandmother.”
In 1966, Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa. He was studying the history of Africa at that time. 26、Uncle Li and Uncle Wang are good friends. They live next to each other and their farms are both at the foot of the mountain. So they can help each other. But neither of them likes to use his head. They're both poor though they work hard. Most villagers have built new houses, but they still live in the low and broken houses. They never find out why.
Once Uncle Li went to town to buy some medicine for his wife. In the town he heard the apples in a city were expensive. He told Uncle Wang about it as soon as he went back. They decided to carry some apples to the city. They borrowed some money from their friends and bought nearly 1,000 kilograms of apples in the villages and carried them to the city on a tractor. Bad luck! A lot of apples has already been carried there when they arrived. A few days later they had to sell them at a low price (价格)。They felt unhappy and returned to their village.
"I can't understand why we sustained (蒙受) losses in business while others always profit (盈利)" Uncle Li asked one day.
"The tractor was too small " Uncle Wang said without thinking. "We'll carry more apples on a truck next time!"

27、Crows have long been connected with horror and murder. But maybe their most disturbed quality is really just how smart they are. Kaeli Swift, a lecturer at the University of Washington, gives three examples of crow smarts.
1. Crows can memorize human faces Wildlife biologists found this out by doing a simple experiment using rubber masks. Researchers in the dangerous mask caught some American crows and then freed them. When the birds saw the dangerous face again, Swift says, “they would alarm-call, they would dive-bomb that person.” Even some other crows attacked the wearer of the dangerous mask. Swift says this suggests the crows “were actually learning from their buddies that this special person is dangerous”. So next time you come across a crow, maybe treat it with a little more respect. After all, the crow won’t forget.
2. Crows have “funerals” for their dead Humans aren’t the only animals to note their dead. American crows mark the passing of their dead in two ways: with alarm calls or a series of loud angry shouts, and with mobbing. Mobbing is when large numbers of crows gather around the dead crow and also begin to shout angrily, Swift says. Swift and his partner also found out that the “funerals” have more to do with making sure of the cause of death and with spreading the word about possible dangers.
3. Crows create and use tool As Swift puts it, New Caledonian crows are almost “flying primates” (灵长类) because they create hooked tools — small branches shaped into hooks to fish out insects in wood. She also thinks these crows might be “the only other animals besides early humans that often make hooks in the wild”. |
【1】Why do American crows have “funerals” for their dead?
A.To respect their dead like humans.
B.To make alarm calls or loud angry shouts.
C.To gather around the dead crow and start to shout angrily as well.
D.To make sure of the cause of death and spread the possible dangers.
【2】Kaeli Swift’s research tells us that ________.
A.all the other crows know the danger by remembering the face
B.some crows are “flying primates” because they catch insects
C.you can treat a crow with respect because it may remember you
D.crows are the only animals that often make hooked tools in the wild

28、在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给。
If you suffer from shyness (羞怯), you are not alone, for shyness is a universal phenomenon.
It is not surprising that social scientists are exploring its environmental causes.
The first environmental cause of shyness may be a child’s home and family life. Today’s children are growing up in smaller families, with f【1】 relatives living nearby. Growing up in homes in which both parents work full time, children may not have the socializing experience of frequent visits by neighbors and friends. Because of their lack of social skills, they may begin to feel shy when they start school.
A s【2】 environmental cause of shyness in an individual may be one’s culture. In a large study made in Japan, 57 percent of people rated (评估) t【3】 as shy. Researchers Lynne Henderson and Philip Zimbardo say, “One explanation is that in Japan, a person’s s【4】 is credited externally to (表面上归因于) parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, and others, while failure is entirely blamed on ( 完全归咎于) the person.” Therefore, Japanese learn not to take risks in public and rely i【5】 on group-shared decisions.
Technology may also play a role. In the United States, the number of young people who report being shy has r【6】 from 40 percent to 50 percent in recent years. Due to our huge advances in technology, watching television, playing video games, and surfing the Web have taken the place of recreational activities that involve social interaction (涉及交际互动) for many young people. Adults, too, are becoming more isolated as a result of technology. Face-to-face interactions with bank clerks, gas station attendants and shop assistants are no longer n【7】 because people can use machines to do their banking, fill their gas tanks, and order goods. In short, they become shy.
It appears that most people have experienced shyness at some time in their lives. Therefore, if you are shy, you have lots of company.
