24、What is “American food”? To many people, American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken. If you have a sweet tooth, you may even think of apple pies or chocolate chip cookies. It’s true that Americans eat these things. But are these the only kind of food you can find in America?
Except for Thanksgiving turkey, it’s hard to find a typical “American” food. The United States is a land of immigrants(移民). When people move to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. So Americans eat food from many different countries. That’s why you can find almost all kinds of ethnic (异国风味的) food in America, such as Italian pizza, Mexican tacos(墨西哥饼) and Chinese fried rolls. But they don’t taste quite like the real taste of the food.
As a large country-style cooking, take a trip to New England and try seafood dishes, and travel through the Midwest for baked food.
Now Americans live at a fast speed and often have some fast food. One of the most common quick American meals is sandwiches. Some Americans also choose to eat unhealthy food, but others prefer “all natural” eating habits. They refuse to eat any food with additives(添加剂).
American culture is a good example of the saying: “You are what you eat.” The different kinds of food show the different kinds of personal taste. Anyway, it’s all American.

Jenny wasn't interested in playing the piano. She liked writing stories and acting them out with her friends. But Mrs Windsor gave her piano lessons for free, so she felt she should have a try. Every Sunday she had her piano lessons in Mrs Windsor's house.
One Sunday morning, Jenny walked into Mrs Windsor's music room and sat down on the piano bench as usual.
"Hello," Jenny heard a voice behind her. She turned around and saw a young girl.
"What's your name?" The girl asked.
Before Jenny could answer, Mrs Windsor walked in and said, "Jenny, this is my niece (侄女), Pasha. Pasha, this is Jenny. I need to go to hospital, so Pasha will give you your lesson today."

26、As we walked down the shore, Ben Gunn told his story. “I was alone here for years,” he said. “One day, I found the skeleton(骷髅). I saw it was pointing to a tree. I dug around that tree and found the treasure. I was living in a cave, so I took the treasure to the cave. This morning, when Long John Silver and his men came to look for the treasure, I showed myself to one of them. He thought I was a ghost.” Ben laughed. “he ran off, and this gave me time to get back to the squire(乡绅) and the doctor. They were waiting at the cave.”
“Now I know,” I said to the doctor, “why you gave the map to Silver.”
“It was useless by then,” the doctor said. “There was no buried treasure. Ben Gunn had it. My plan was to get Long John Silver and his men away from the stockade(木寨). We could then get some stores from it.”
When we got back to the cave, the squire was waiting for us.
“Three of the mutineer(反叛者) got away,” the doctor told him. “But if we hurry, we can get to the boat before them. They ran back to the stockade on the other side of the island. We are nearer to the boat than they are.”
I went into the cave. The captain was lying inside it next to the treasure—a pile of gold coins.
“Hello, Jim,” he said. “I am pleased to see you. But I don’t think you or I will be going to see again.”
That night, the captain died. We carried the treasure down to the boat. We lit a fire on the shore and had a fine meal together. We were not afraid of the three mutineers. We had guns. They had none. There were more us than of them.
The next morning, we went in the boat towards the Hispaniola. We didn’t care about the three men. We left them on the island.
I will not tell you about the journey home. Nothing important happened. But as soon as we got to Bristol, Long John Silver ran away. He took some of the gold with him. None of us cared. We were pleased to see the back of him. We each shared the treasure and used it in a different way.

27、Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects(影响) of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn’t have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they want to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What’s wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(全球的) warming. In addition, foo that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.
