24、My Year Abroad
This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada – Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
Alvin Chen – Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!

25、 An old farmer lived on a farm with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early to read his Bhagavat Geeta. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the Bhagavat Geeta just like you but I don't understand it. What good does reading the Bhagavat Geeta do?”
The grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told to, but all the water leaked out(漏出)before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the same took place. He told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water with a basket.
The old man said, “You're just not trying hard enough,” So the boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. He said, “See Grandpa, it's useless!”
“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “Look at the basket.”
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket into a clean one inside and outside.
“You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Krishna in our lives.”

26、 If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. you need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover (残留物) into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper (包装材料) into a recyclable waste bin; third, throw the single-use cup and straw (吸管) into a dry waste bin.
Sound complex (复杂的)? You’ll have to get used to it. From July 1 on, people in Shanghai are required to sort (将……分类) their garbage (垃圾) according to strict rules. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar garbage -sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year. Most of this waste is buried (填埋) in landfills (垃圾填埋场), which may pollute water and soil! Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer (肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently (有效率地), we need to sort our garbage.
Can’t garbage processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the troublesome (棘手的) task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?
【1】How many steps do people in Shanghai need to follow if they want to throw away a cup of milk tea?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
【2】When are people in Shanghai required to sort garbage?

C.Because no one recycles garbage. D.Because of the increasing amount of waste.
【4】What can’t wet garbage be used to make?
A.Gas. B.Heat. C.Fertilizer. D.Plastic.
【5】What is the best title for the passage?
A.Our waste should be recycled B.We should sort our garbage
C.Pour out leftover into a waste bin D.We are using up space for new landfills
27、 Some of you may play Ant Forest. It is a game on Ali pay. Users collect "energy" to make their "trees" grow. When the "energy" reaches a certain level (程度), some organizations and companies will plant a real tree in a desert area of China. And now it seems that the country's efforts as a whole to make a greener world have paid off.
According to a study by NASA, China and India are the main reasons for making the Earth greener over the past twenty years. The study has found that since 2000 the Earth's green leaf area has increased by 5 percent, or over 5 million square kilometers. The increased green leaf area is as large as that of the Amazon rainforest. It is mainly the result of big trees-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture (集约型农业) in both countries, according to NASA. China and India take up one third of the increased greening, but is only 9 percent of the planet's land area covered in vegetation.
China played the most important role in the increase of the green land, adding 25 percent to this increase, while India added 6.8 percent. Over the past years, China has made great efforts to green the land. In 1978, China began a nation-wide forestation project–the Three North Shelterbelt Forest Program, also known as the" Great Green Wall". The program has seen many trees planted in 13 provinces and autonomous regions such as Tibet and Inner Mongolia in northern China to act as windbreak. By the end of 2017, the forest coverage rate among the areas of the project had reached 13.57 percent, compared to 5.05 percent 40 years ago.
Because of China's success in dealing with desertification (沙漠化), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) believes the country is a good example for others to follow. China is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world.
【1】What lesson can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Failure is the mother of success.

A.The Great Wall has become greener with the help of the program.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re talking to someone but 【1】 keep looking at their phone? This is called “phubbing” — a mix of the words “phone” and “snubbing” (不理睬).
When someone is “phubbing”, they’re using their phone 【2】 (look) through the online news, play games and so on, instead of focusing on the conversation or spending time with the people they’re with. The word was first used in 2012. 【3】 now most people have smartphones, phubbing is a common problem.
Most people would agree that it’s 【4】 (polite) to be focused on your phone when you’re spending time with another person. The expert William Hanson thinks so, 【5】. “Phubbing is a no-no!” he says. “If you have planned to go out with friends, focus on them and not your friends on your phone.”
Studies 【6】 (find) that phubbing can break your relationships with others. Those who “phub” are 【7】 (think) of as less polite and caring.
So science has shown that phubbing is not good for us—but 【8】 do we do it? It might be because we are feeling bored, worried or stressed. Or it might be because we are addicted to (沉溺于) checking our phones or 【9】 (play) games.
Whatever the reason may be, phubbing is a bad habit and can make us miss out on real moments with the people around us. 【10】 the next time you’re spending time with a friend or family member, try and keep your phone out of sight!
