24、Some children wish to be writers when they grow up. They mean that they want to write stories or books. They would be happy if many people read their stories or books some day. But I would like to tell these children that they will need to be good readers and read a lot before they become good writers. Nearly all great writers listened to others tell stories long before they started school. They also kept on reading for hours and hours for years. Even when they have become writers, they spend much of their time reading books instead of watching TV in the evening.
If you are a good reader, it won’t take you long to do the reading homework your teacher ask you to do. Then you will have time to read other books for fun. You read so well that you always want to look for more books to read.
If you want to be a writer, reading is very important. When you decide to become a writer, you had better tell yourself, “I must read more and more if I really want to become a good writer.”

25、Do you know something about tree rings? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago?
A tree will grow well in a climate with lots of sunshine and rainfall. And little sunshine or rainfall will limit the growth of trees by studying the tree rings. For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.
Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying the history of man. Many centuries ago, there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand there-no trees and no people. What happened?
A scientist studied the rings of dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. As all the trees had gone, the people there had to move.
【1】 Tree rings can tell ______ according to the passage.
A. whether a tree was strong or not.
B. whether the climate was good or not
C. how tall trees used to be.
【2】 If you want to find out the weather of twenty years ago, you should study ________.
A. the twentieth ring
B. the tenth ring
C. the twenty-second ring
【3】What does the underline word “limit” mean?
A. 证实 B. 限制 C. 促进

A. Trees can’t grow well in a climate with little sunshine and rainfall.
B. Tree rings grow far from each other in a bad climate.
C. The people left the place in New Mexico because the land became sand.
【5】The passage mainly tells us ________ .
A. how climate affects the growing of trees
B. the importance of the trees
C Tree rings can help us study the history of weather and man.

27、 Need to buy something? Why go to a store? Buy it on the internet! Need it now? Why wait? Ask for next-day delivery! Each day, more and more people try online shopping. In fact, online sales have doubled in the last ten years. But not everyone is excited. Some scientists now say that online shopping is bad for the environment.
People are surprised to hear this. “They think, I don’t need to drive, and the business doesn’t need to build a store, so there will be less pollution,” says Nuria Prost, an environmental scientist. “But it is not so simple. In fact, online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution.”
In truth, the Internet is not always as good a friend to the environment as it seems. For example, most people thought that the internet would help offices use less paper and other materials. But paper use increased by 33% between 1986 and 1997. “Online shopping could have similarly negative effects,” says Nevil Cohen, a professor of environmental science. Part of the problem is what people are buying these days. In the past, people bought things on the internet that did not require much packing material, such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large, heavy products such as televisions, computers, and furniture. These products need to be packed in large amount of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.
Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask for next-day delivery, companies often have to send them by air. Airplanes use much more fuel than cars and produce more car dioxide(CO2). When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses, this creates even more travel by airplane.
Online product returns are also a problem. For example, an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes without extra pay if they are the wrong size. This doubles the packing material and number airplane trips required to sell one pair of shoes.
“If people want to protect the environment, they need to think before they shop,” says Prost. “People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want? Do I really need it tomorrow, or can I wait?” Online stores can also ask customers to pay money for returns. This may make people shop more carefully. “Online shopping is fast and easy,” says Prost, “but we can’t forget the negative effects it has on the environment.”
【1】The passage begins with several questions to ________.
