24、Work is helpful to health. Scientists find that the hard-working people live longer than those who have no jobs. Studies show that the jobless are in poorer health than job-holders. Career( 职业的) women are healthier than housewives.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest people are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel them happiest when they are working hard. They work as a bridge between dream and reality, so they have energy every day. By work, people get to know each other. By taking part in all kinds of activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss(丧失)of work means the loss of everything. It affects man's spirit and it will cause more illnesses.
Besides, work gives one a sense of hope and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status(形象) in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond( 超越) words.
From the above, we can come to a conclusion; the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be.

26、Have you ever wondered what P.E. classes are like in other countries? In China, P.E. tests are necessary for students to graduate (毕业) from both middle school and high school. To get good grades on the P.E. tests, Chinese students will need to practice running as well as doing sit-ups and pull-ups (引体向上). However, this is not the way that P.E. classes work in US high schools.
In my high school, we are asked to take two terms of P.E. to graduate. We play real sports during P.E. classes, such as basketball and volleyball. There are also some other typical American sports that we often play, such as football and baseball.
I didn’t know the rules of football and baseball when I first came to the US. The teacher let me sit on the sidelines and watch how other students played them in order to let me find out the rules.
We also learn some useful life skills in P.E. classes. Last year, I learned how to do CPR (心肺复苏), which is a life-saving skill. We were also taught how to give first aid to someone who is in danger. These skills are a large part of the final grade for the P.E. class in my high school. Self-defense (自卫) is taught in P.E. class as well. This includes some tae kwon do (跆拳道) and karate (空手道) skills, as well as Chinese kung fu. It is practical.
【1】Our Chinese students need to pass _____ test to graduate from secondary school.
A.running
B.basketball
C.volleyball
D.Chinese kung fu
【2】US high school students have to take _____ of P.E. in order to graduate.
A.two weeks
B.two months
C.two terms
D.two years
【3】How did the writer learn the rules of some typical American sports?
A.His teacher taught him.
B.He learned by watching the games.
C.His classmates helped him.
D.He learned from the sports books.
【4】Which of the following is TRUE about P.E. classes in US high schools?
A.Students can choose to learn life skills.
B.Students play real sports and practice running.
C.Students hardly learn Chinese kung fu and karate.
D.Students can learn CPR and other life-saving skills.
【5】In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read the passage?

27、Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He would suddenly fall ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He worked with the seriously sick children. He would talk, play and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralysed(使瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started to visit her in her room, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, the girl began to paint using her mouth.
Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill again. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, the little girl came in. But this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story, and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than a doctor. And my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

28、阅读理解填词
The Waste of Worry
Do you remember being afraid of monsters at night as a child? But as you grow up, you know that there are no monsters, right? We always have f【1】 and worries about things that are not real. The crazy thing is that worry and fear make you r【2】 from something that isn’t even chasing you.
England’s former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, said that whenever he started to worry, he’d remember a man who said on his death bed “I’ve had a lot of t【3】 in my life—and most of it never h【4】!” You see, it’s not work that kills people, but worry.
When you fear the future, you’re w【5】 the presents. Worry seems like a rocking chair: it k【6】 you going, but you don’t get anywhere! And if you can’t help worrying, remember that worrying can’t help you e【7】.
If you’re fearful, you’ll find something to be fearful about. That’s w【8】 the former American President, Franklin Roosevelt, said: “The o【9】 thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
Many of us are afraid of what others think; but if we knew how s【10】 they think about us, we’d know we needn’t worry.
So whatever you’re afraid of or worrying about, ask yourself, “Is it real? And if it is real, how will worrying about it help me? Is it something I can change? If not, how can I best deal with it?”
