24、Depression (抑郁症) is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five around the world.
Although people have believed depression to be a problem among the rich and educated, studies shows that depression among everyone. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world’s population will be suffering from a serious depression.
A recent research shows that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.
The researchers used a nationwide long-term survey of teenage health to investigate the relationship between media (传媒) use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000.
As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and a half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.
Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.
The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games of radio etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount (总量) of media use.
The study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities that could help prevent depression.
Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to be volunteers.

26、
If we think of Earth's resources as a bank account, then we have already used up all the"money"that Earth saved for this year.
As of July 29, we have already used up as many natural resources as our planet can create in one year, CNN reported. This day even has a name: Earth Overshoot Day(EOD).
The Global Footprint Network, a nonprofit*organization calculate* this day. It has been marking EOD since 1971 by keeping record of how much water, land fish and forest we use, as well as how much CO2 were emitting*
Each year, the human population grows and more resources are used. That's why EOD has moved forward by more than two months over the last 20 years. This year, it fell on the earliest date yet-- three days earlier than it did last year (August 1st )
How much do we use ?
Not all countries are the same when it comes to resource usage. Some countries have used more resources than other countries. A survey result from Global Footprint Network shows that America has used two times more resources than China. India has used the least. If everyone lived like Americans do, for example, we would need five Earths.
What results do we get?
Human beings are now using natural resources 1.75 times faster than they can be renewed*.This has affected the environment in a bad way. For example, wildfires are becoming more frequent*. Cities around the world are running out of water: Up to l million species*could die out thanks to human activity.
What can we do?
However, humans are taking some small steps to deal with the problem. Countries like China and India are trying their best to green the planet. China has called on its people to plant many trees around the country. It has made some of its deserts smaller. China’s total forest rose from 12 percent in the 1980s to 22.96 percent last year. But there's still a very long way to go .

27、 Mom always said that I could swim when I was only two months old. I was surprised at the amazing fact. If this was true, then why was I afraid of water? I went to swim every summer, but I didn’t make any progress. I thought it was my fault.
One hot summer afternoon, my father and I went to the swimming pool to swim. When I was walking along the bank of the pool, I suddenly fell into the pool! I was so afraid that I shouted at once! But the water kept coming towards me and I drank a lot of it. I was moving upside down and trying to reach the bank. I was struggling very hard to keep my head above the water.
A minute was like a hundred years to me. However, to my surprise, I was able to keep a balance. Just then, my father saw me and he seemed to be shocked. He then said, “Calm down!
