24、What is the most stressful thing in school? It is probably the exam. Exams can put us under a lot of pressure. But some students do well under pressure, while others feel terrible. So, why do some students perform better under stress?
It all comes down to dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is a chemical (化学物质) in our brain that sends signals (信号) to our body. It has many important roles: influencing memory, attention and how we learn. Our brains work best when there is a balance of dopamine — not too much or too little.
Our brains control dopamine in two ways. It either takes out dopamine quickly, or gradually. Exam success can be connected to how fast dopamine goes back to a balance, according to new research from the University of Missouri, reported Yahoo.
What happens when we take an exam? If you become stressed, your brain will start to overload on dopamine. It is like a cup overflowing with water. The quicker you can go back to a balance of dopamine, the quicker you will concentrate, helping you perform better in an exam.
Scientists found that, during a test, people who slowly got back to an even balance of dopamine scored 8 percent lower. That's the difference between a good mark and a bad mark.
But don't fear, there is some good news for every student. The study also found that the more practice you get, the less stressed you'll be.
So, it turns out that practice really does make perfect.
【1】Which of the following things does dopamine play a role in?

25、Many years ago, when I was working as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Lisa. The poor little girl had a very serious disease and was dying. The doctor had done his best but no medicine really worked. The only chance to save her seemed to be a blood transfusion(输血) from her five-year-old brother. The little boy had the same disease before and had developed the antibodies to fight the illness. The doctor talked to the little boy about what they planned to do, and asked him if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate(迟疑) for a moment. He took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I’ll do it if it can save Lisa.” As the transfusion was going on, the little boy lay quietly in bed next to his sister. He looked at her and smiled all the time. When everything was done and the color returned to his sister’s face, he didn’t smile and he looked a little afraid. 26、Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous work, might be updated(更新), 200 years on. Austen’s popularity is because of her cleverness. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here’s my own suggestion.
It’s a truth finally and generally known that a woman with brains should have the same opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel by sexism (性别歧视).
“My dear husband,” said Mrs. Bennet one day. “have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over(接管) by a bright young businesswoman?”
Her indifferent (漠不关心) husband replied that he had not. “but it is, it is,” she replied excitedly. While the husband made no reply.
“Don’t you want to know her plans?” she cried.
“Well, my dear, the rumor(谣言) is that she had already set up successful business in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.” “What is her name?” “Bingley.”
“Is she married or single?”
“What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.” “How so? How can it possibly affect(影响) them?”
“My dear love, those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are certain to be jobs going.”
“Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy(想象的事) to the place.”
“Nonsense, my love, how little you’ve noticed the world has changed. She’s got the business qualification(许可), I’m told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.”
“Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job.” “Oh, that’s not possible. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I’ll go along all the same.”
That was 10 years ago. Mrs. Bennet is now the manager of a big company.
It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs. Bennet would be one of very few women on the company board, that her salary(收入) would be still lower than other men workers.

27、
One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane(车道) when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire(轮胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.
I was frightened. But then I couldn't believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn't believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital.”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck(垃圾车法则)”. He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they'll throw it at you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don't.
