  • 26、American English is full of colorful expressionsOne such expression is to touch all bases

There are four bases in baseball – first,  second,  third and home plateWhen a baseball player hits the ball,  he must run to each base – in order – and touch it with his footIt is the only way to get a pointIf the player hits the ball and fails to touch all the bases,  the point will not be counted

The importance of touching all the bases was shown at the start of the 1974 baseball seasons

Hank Aaron was a player with the Atlanta Braves teamHe was trying to find the record for hitting the most home runs (全垒打)Aaron needed just one home run to be well matched with the record held by Babe Ruth,  the greatest hitter in baseball historyAaron got that home run the very first time he had a chance to hit the ballThat gave him 714 home runs – the same as Babe RuthAfter that day,  baseball fans held their breath every time when it was Hank Aaron’s turn to hitWhen would he hit home run number 715?

The wait was not longIn the second week of the season,  Aaron again hit the ball over the wallHe had beaten Babe Ruth’s recordBut first,  he had to run around the four basesThe other players on his team watched carefully to make sure he touched each one

  • 27、Mr White’s family decided to repair their home. Mr White bought the home two and a half years ago. Since the kids were growing up, he and his wife wanted to make some changes to the house.

They decided to knock down their living room wall to open up the space. When the wooden walls were removed, they were shocked to find a lizard stuck in the small space between the walls. The lizard’s foot was stuck(插入) by a nail, which was hammered() from the other side of the wall.

Mrs White reminded him that they hammered a nail to hang up their kids photo. However, they questioned how the lizard had stayed alive so long without moving from that place. So Mr White stopped his work and watched the lizard: what has it been doing? What and how has it been eating? Later, he didn’t know from where another lizard appeared carrying food to the stuck lizard’s mouth. That was a real surprise! This act was heartwarming, and he was moved deeply by the little animal. The free lizard had been feeding the stuck one for more than two years! The lizard carried the hope of survival, even in a difficult situation.

Both lizards had never-ending hope for each other and carried their hearts with love and care. Such love, a beautiful love!

Such love happened with this tiny animal. Why can’t we humans always carry that kind of love in our hearts? Life is full of all kinds of difficulties. What we can do is to give our hands to the one in need and share our love. Sharing is caring.

    1The lizard’s _______ was stuck by a nail.

2Mr White stopped his work to _______.

    A. was sorry for himself

    B. was worried about the lizard

    C. was angry with his wife

    D. was moved by the lizard

4What can we learn from the free lizard?

    A. It encourages us to live even longer.

    B. It teaches us to trust our friends.

    C. It tells us to take pity on the stuck lizard.

    D. It teaches us to give our hands to our loved ones.

  • 28、Do you sometimes wonder if life will always be the same? Perhaps nothing ever 【1】(seem)to change? You wake up in the morning, get ready for school and then somehow, by the time your head hits the pillow at night, it’s as if you’ve just lived a repetition of the day before. It might not seem like it, but whether you’re sure 【2】 it, you do move forward every single day. Here’s a fun way to see all 【3】 progress you’re making.

    Keep a record!

Before you go to bed tonight, take out a fresh notebook(a larger size will work better for this). Write down the date at the top of the 【4】(one)page, then go over the day in your mind. Think of all the things you did, saw, 【5】(hear), tasted, smelled, or touched. Maybe you learned a new concept in Maths, a handy skill in the kitchen, an easier way to draw faces, and an awesome skateboard trick. While 【6】(exercise), did you lift heavier weights, run longer, walk 【7】(far) or stretch better? Everything counts, even if a tiny step.

    It’s all in the detail!

Next, describe what happened during the day and what you learned. It can be just a few words or several paragraphs. Add whatever mattered most to you—it might be a 【8】(teacher)praise, a grade that you’re proud of or 【9】(congratulate)from a friend. Perhaps you finally found the courage to speak up for a cause you care about, acted on something 【10】 has been troubling you or decided to take part in an activity for the first time.

Training with my dad _________ out to be very challenging. We would get up early for a morning jog, or go for a swim in the pool after school. After a few weeks of training, I signed up for my first triathlon. Before the competition, I nervously waited for the gun. At the start of the run part of the triathlon, my legs already felt like they were made of cement (水泥) .

The run part of the race boiled down to pain tolerance. “Shut up, legs”, one of my favorite sayings, kept me from thinking about the _________ feeling. Then I crossed the finish line. I took a breath and then began a celebration with the other finishers. The sense of achievement was there for all of us.

Looking back, I remember the small boy on that day in Montauk who thought he couldn’t do it. Now, that same boy is not only a huge fan, but also a training partner.
