24、Meeting someone for the first time can be embarrassing if you get it wrong. Suppose you are going to meet a person from the U.K. Do you know what you should say and do? A handshake is the most common way to greet someone, especially if you are in a formal (正式的) situation. However, the type of handshake is important. Your handshake should be confident, but that doesn’t mean you need to crush (挤压) anybody’s fingers. On the other hand, don’t be too weak. It’s always a good idea to smile and look at the person you are shaking hands with. Lastly, remember that two shakes are enough. Take hold of the hand and shake it up and down twice. Don’t hold on for too long — you are not asking someone to dance! Hugging and kissing are more informal greetings in the U.K. They are usually for friends, family and small children. When meeting someone for the first time, you may not want to use these types of greetings. In the past, the British would usually greet strangers with a “How do you do?” Today, this expression is seen as out-of-date. It’s seldom used. Expressions such as “How are you doing?” and “How are you?” have become more popular. These expressions, however, can cause some misunderstanding. When a British person says “How are you?” to you, he or she probably doesn’t expect you to really answer the question. You may just reply with a “How are you?” to him or her. Greeting expressions may be different from one place to another. You might hear a “Now then?” or “Ey up?” when you meet someone from the north of the U.K. How should you reply then? Just smile and say “Hi!” or “How are you?”

26、Do you like listening to music? Do you often turn up the music when you’re using earphones? If so, your hearing may have been damaged(损坏).
The World Health Organization (WHO) is worried that 1.1 billion children and young people are damaging their hearing by listening to loud music. Nearly half the young people in developed countries may lose their hearing because of the "unsafe use" of music players, including smartphones. Loud music in nightclubs, parties and at sports also make it worse. The WHO advises young people to listen to music for just one hour a day. Dr. Etienne Krug told BBC: "What we're trying to do is to draw people's attention to a problem that is not talked about enough." He said it's easy to solve this problem.
Dr. Krug said keeping the music down and limiting (限制) the listening time to less than one hour a day would save a lot of people's hearing. However, he also said, "Even an hour can be too much if the music is too loud.” Ralph Holme, a researcher, explained how loud noise can damage ears. He said: "Loud sounds damage your hearing by killing off thousands of little hair cells(细胞) in the inner ear. The cells can tell different sounds through vibration(振动). But they are very fragile—they get damaged easily and even die if they vibrate too much because of loud sounds for too long.” He warned: "The bigger problem is they don't grow back and the ear can no longer get sound."
No one wants to lose their hearing! Therefore, next time when you listen to music, make sure it's not too loud and only listen for less than an hour. You can enjoy your music much better in this way.

“It started when one boy laughed at him,” said his mother, Lewis. He’d return to his home with questions: “Why am I ________? Why me?” His mother still remembered he was actually sad and angry with that.
Lewis said she didn’t know what to do at that point. A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV to a news story about an eighth grader, Trashaun, becoming popular after sharing videos of his slam dunks (灌篮) on the Internet, and, like Jayce, he ________ most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. To her surprise, Jayce immediately got interested in the videos. At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun was ________ an encouraging moment for Jayce — he saw a role model with a similar ________.
