24、 People usually check whether their keys, wallets and phones are with them before going out. But many people in China now have one more important thing to take, a face mask. They hope that it can protect them from polluted air.
Since January 2013, many cities in China have seen a lot of foggy days. In Beijing, only five days in January were free of smog (雾霾). What’s the difference between fog and smog?
According to scientists, fog is made up of tiny (微小的) drops of water and also ice particles (颗粒) during very cold conditions. Smog is dirty air that looks like a mixture of smoke and fog, caused mainly by smoke from cars and factories in cities.
An official for the Ministry of Environmental Protection told Beijing News that PM2.5 pollution is the main problem with air pollution. PM 2.5 refers to pollution with small particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (直径).
According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two main factors that cause PM 2.5 are motor vehicles and the burning of coal.
Poor air has done harm to people’s health. Children and the elderly are more at risk. A report from Beijing Children’s Hospital shows that from December 5 to December 11, 2013, half of the patients in the hospital came for respiratory (呼吸道的) problems.
Air problems and environmental protection have become a care for the whole nation.
Premier Li Keqiang made his last Government Work Report(政府工作报告) on March 6, 2014. The report said that the government should work hard to prevent pollution and give people a healthy living environment.
It calls on people to make full use of energy and resources (资源) and cut down on energy use.

25、 Most adults show less interest in climate(气候)change than young people. Yet it's adults who have the power to influence the policies(政策)causing climate change. Now a new study shows that teenagers may be able to raise their parents' interest in human effects on climate.
In the study, a new curriculum(课程)was used in some schools in coastal North Carolina. The students worked on four activities centered on the connections between climate change and local wildlife. They also took part in a community-based project and interviewed their parents about the changes in weather they had noticed in their lifetimes. To see how attitudes changed as a result of the program, the researchers surveyed both students and parents at the beginning and the end of the study.
The study shows the students who completed the climate change module cared more about the issue(问题). The effect was even stronger among parents. Experts say the program's success had a lot to do with how teachers dealt with climate change in the classroom.
"Reading a textbook and completing a worksheet are unlikely to lead students to talk about their day at the dinner table, ”says Martha Monroe, an expert on environmental education at the University of Florida. Instead, the researchers designed hands-on lessons focused on local issues. For example, one task involved monitoring the weather outside the school and comparing it with historical information about the area.
Those activities may have helped increase parental involvement. "If you can get kids so excited and talking with their parents about what they are learning in schools, parents will want to learn, ”says Danielle Lawson, a social scientist and leading researcher of the study. However, she adds, “We are not telling the students what to think or what to say. That way, kids didn't feel that there was all this responsibility put on them to change their parents' minds about anything.”
Lawson is hopeful that kids can boost their parents' understanding of climate science. "I know how powerful kids can be, ”Lawson says. "Kids don't need a special curriculum to discuss climate change at home. They just need to talk to their parents about what they see going on.”
【1】The second paragraph is mainly about
A.how the study was carried out
B.how the activities were designed
C.why a new curriculum was introduced
D.why both students and parents were surveyed

27、Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds (种子) to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread way.
Other plants depend wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions (蒲公英) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its "wings" help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole, when the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
