24、Do video games do harm to our children? Today, many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK, 99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games every week. This information tells us that the benefits (益处) and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and trains, in restaurants and even at school.
Video games are educational, too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move their hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. What’s more, video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also a good way to teach children about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download many games for free. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent or scary games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and do badly in studies. Finally, if children spend too much time playing video games by themselves, they might not learn how to play with their friends.
All in all, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and some disadvantages. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parents should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.

25、Fossil of New Dinosaur Found in Chongqing
By DR in Chongqing|chinadaily.com.cn |2022-03-10 16:18
Fossil remains of a new kind of plant-eating dinosaur were found in Yunyang County, Chongqing recently. The animal is the oldest of its kind on land, suggesting that stegosaurs may have come from Asia.
A geological (地勘) team from Chongqing, working with London’s Natural History Museum, gave the new kind of stegosaur a new name—Bushanosaurus primitivus (元始巴山龙). “Bashan” in the name “Bashanosaurus” means the place in Chongqing where it was found, and “primitivus” means first.
There are four oldest stegosaurs found in the world. Two are in Morocco and Argentina. The other two are in China—one found in Zigong, Sichuan Province the other found recently in Yunyang County, Chongqing.
Yunyang Pu’an Geopark (地质公园) will be open soon. The students in Yunyang County have already heard that they can study dinosaurs there. “We know that more fossil remains will be found. I just can’t wait to have an interesting geography and history class in this geopark!” said one student.

26、Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people only think about climbing while others avoid climbing. But one thing is true that all people come across mountains in their lives.
When I was little, my family moved to a small town. It was built at the bottom of a big mountain. One day after school, while walking through the green woods of this mountain, I saw a set of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Could this be the way to the top? I made a decision to find out the mystery behind those steps. I climbed and climbed till it was getting dark, but I wasn’t even close to the top.
The voice of reason (理智) told me to hurry back home and try again the next day. I ran back home in the dark, trying not to get too scared. I didn’t tell anyone about what I found that night. I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of the mountain we lived on. Could there be a prince, treasures or ghosts up there?
Ah…such childhood fantasies (幻想)! Those were the days when we dared to dream. We dared to do crazy things! Now I’m grown up, and life has shown me a beating (惨败) at times.
I did live on a mountain in a town as I wrote, but I created this childhood fantasy to make my days so much more fun as a kid. The challenges we face in life are like mountains we need to climb. Dreaming about what’s at the top of the mountain makes us think about what we want out of life. Tomorrow is another day, and still, we must climb.

27、
People can reduce, reuse, or recycle waste instead of throwing it away. Matt and Sam decided to do an experiment. They wanted to see exactly how much waste the three R’s could save.
First, they collected the rubbish from six classrooms at their school. They divided the rubbish into three groups:
Things that were reusable, such as a pencil or a marker that had been thrown away
Things that could be recycled, such as cans, glass, or paper
Things that were truly waste
Then, Matt and Sam weighed each of the three groups. They learned that 84%of the total rubbish thrown away that day could be recycled or reused. They decided to do something about it.
Matt and Sam presented the idea of starting a recycling programme to the school leaders. Then they worked with the Student Council. They prepared brochures (手册) to send home to tell the students and their families about recycling. They stated in the brochure that recycling helps to keep our planet healthy. The school bought colored containers (容器) for each classroom. Each room received a blue container for paper and a green container for glass and cans. They also received a red container for real rubbish.
Within a short time, each classroom in the school was sorting recyclable materials from rubbish before it was thrown. Matt and Sam decided to weigh the rubbish one more time. They wanted to check the school’s progress. They collected the rubbish from the red containers from the same six classrooms as before. They sorted the rubbish into three groups again and weighed each group. This time, they were pleased to find that the red containers were filled with 90% waste that should be thrown away. Only 10% of recyclable materials had been thrown into the red containers. Matt and Sam were pleased with their school’s effort at reducing waste on our planet.
