24、The next day I looked for a pen and some paper among my things. I made two lists: one of all the bad things about my situation and another of all the good things.
BAD
I am alone. There is nobody here to talk to or to help me.
I have no warm clothes.
I don’t have much protection against wild animals. Nobody is going to come and save me.
GOOD
I am alive. My friends are dead.
It’s hot here, so I don’’t need warm clothes. There aren’t any wild animals here.
I can live well because 1 was able to save a lot of useful things from the ship.
I looked at my lists and I thought, “These lists show something important. We can always find something good in a bad situation if we look for it. I must stop feeling sad and sorry for myself. My new life is here, on this island. I must make it as comfortable as I can.”
I started by making my house stronger. I built thick walls and put branches on the roof to keep out the rain. I put up some shelves and put my things on them. I made some furniture—two tables and a chair. They weren’t very beautiful but they were very useful. I made a small cave at the back of my house. It was cool and a good place to keep food. I called it my “kitchen”.
Time passed quickly because I was always busy. In the mornings I went for a long walk in the woods and hills with my dog. I caught birds and small animals for food. When I came back, I worked until about eleven o’clock. Then I prepared something to eat. I rested between midday and two o’clock because it was very hot. In the evenings I did some more work or I took out my pen and ink and wrote about my life on the island. At seven o’clock I went to bed because it got dark early on the island. Sometimes it rained all day and the wind was strong, so I had to stay inside.

25、You may have a sense of direction, or you may not. Some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can get lost easily even with a map. Why?
Scientists say people are all born with a sense of direction, but they are not sure how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at the University of Liverpool supports this idea. It suggests that if people don’t develop their sense of direction, they will lose it.
“Children have the ability to find their way after they are seven years old,” says Jim Martland, the research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed to go out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they will never develop the skills to improve their sense of direction.”
Jim Martand also emphasizes(强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He gives the following suggestions.
★ If you are using a map, try to find the place where you are and the place where you are going. Try to find the way between them.
★ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put in near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route(路线) as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
★ Use lines such as streets in a town, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone. Note any landmark such as a tower block or a hill which can help you to find out where you are.
【1】Scientists believe that only some people are born with the sense of direction.
【2】The sense of direction is a lifelong ability.
【3】Kids can’t develop a good sense of direction if they’re always driven around in a car.
【4】Counting our steps can help us know how far we have gone.
【5】Bikes can be used as landmarks when you get to a new city.
