25、On Earth, sunlight can be covered by clouds and there is no sunlight at night. But in space, the sun shines all the time.
Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time. Scientists at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) are working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth. They have created a special tool called MAPLE for this project. MAPLE’s job is to test the idea of sending energy wirelessly(无线地) from space to Earth. It is a lot more difficult because we usually use wires to move electrical energy from one place to another.
To show that MAPLE could work, the scientists did a test. MAPLE sent energy to two devices (设备) 30 cm away in space. The energy was then turned into electricity, MAPLE sent energy to a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able to discover the energy, showing that it’s possible to send energy from the sun to Earth from space.
The scientists at Caltech are now trying to find ways to improve MAPLE. In the future, they hope to launch (发射) many large devices. Each will have huge solar panels (太阳能电池板), along with MAPLE devices to send the energy down to Earth wirelessly.
Using MAPLE, the scientists will be able to send the power to exactly where they want it, either in space or on Earth. Dr. Hajimiri, thinks that one day MAPLE could bring energy to places that need it, helping more people all over the world.

Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50percent of people are shy.Almost 80percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15to 20percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies.Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well.Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy.At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well.Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries. They found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy.But in Israel, only one of three people said so.What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true.Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends,or bad luck.In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people,it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job.But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget﹣﹣﹣if you are shy,you are not the only one.

Why some people become lifelong readers?
They can be identified by the bound, printed stacks of paper they read on their lap. They are, in other words, readers.
Joining their groups seems e【1】: Get a book, read it and Voila! But behind that easy process is a question of motivation(动力)—of why some people s【2】 in getting great pleasure from reading while others don’t.
As Daniel Willingham e【3】 in his book Raising Kids Who Read, three points have a major i【4】 on whether someone becomes a lifelong reader or not.
First, a child needs to be a “fluent decoder”(流利的解码员)—that is, able to smoothly “go from print on the page to words in the m【5】.” This is something that school teaches, but parents can help with it t【6】 reading to and with their kids. Reading to and with kids at an early a【7】 can give them a good start when they start school.
S【8】, Willingham said, these fluent decoders usually have a lot of background knowledge about the world. “The main point of whether a child or an adult understands a text is how m【9】 they already know about the topic,” Willingham noted.
If those two things are in place, the final part will be “motivation - you have to have a positive opinion toward reading and a positive self-image as a reader,” Willingham said.
There are, as so many parents all understand, a number of advantages of being able to read about future life, but the focus should be on helping kids discover the inner v【10】 in it, in the moment. After that, other good things will come.
