21、 My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said: “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business (生意) made me feel proud (骄傲) and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said seriously, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I still value(珍视) it , which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress (给……留下印象) the person you are working for.
After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life. Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you only think about hard work and money, 58 ” I answered.

22、 Scientists in Britain and the United States have made a new kind of enzyme(酵素) that eats plastics (塑料). With its help, plastics can be turned into smaller parts and go away quickly. Scientists believe that, in the future, it could solve the problem of plastic pollution.
The enzyme is able to break down(分解) PET, a form of plastic. PET was first made in the 1940s and is now widely used to make plastic bottles. It can stay in the environment for many years and pollute large areas of land and water. So it has always been a headache to deal with the waste from PET and other plastics.
The researchers found it while examining the structure a natural enzyme in Japan. They found that the natural enzyme was helping to break down PET plastics. So, they decided to make small changes to the enzyme by adding some amino acids(氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme's plastic-eating abilities work faster and better.
John McGeehan, one of the lead researchers, said, "We have made an improved enzyme. It's better than the natural one. And we are trying to make more improvements to it." He went on, "the enzyme is not bad for humans or animals, and it is friendly to the environment. So we are thinking about putting it into wider use."
The team is now trying to make the enzyme break down PET in large quantities (大量的). “We’ll see that the plastic pollution may be stopped with this technology. However, there is still a long way to go," John McGeehan added.

23、You may have heard of the famous saying, "East or West, home is the best.” What does the word "home" mean to you? How do you say the word in French, in Chinese, in your language? Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation(翻译). At last, I became very angry and ran to my father. He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, “Are these things true or not? Do you know what you are really like? Go and make a list of what she said and find the things that are true.” I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered(发现) that about half of the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change(改变) (like being very thin). But there were things I could and wanted to change. For the first time, I got a clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Dad. He didn’t take it, “That’s just for you,” he said, “You know the truth(真相) about yourself better than anyone else. When people say something that is true about you, you should find it helpful.”
