Vince’s uncle and aunt lived in another city. One day they came to stay with Vince’s parents, and they brought their small son, Toby, with them. Toby was seven years old and he didn’t like soap or water, either. The boys sat with their parents for a few minutes and then they went outside. 22、Have you heard of dodos (渡渡鸟)? The dodo was a kind of bird that was very large. You might not think it was a bird at all because the dodo could not fly. It was a member of the chicken family. It lived happily and safely until people arrived. European sailors (水手) found those birds in the 16th century on Mauritius Island in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors found the strange birds that could not fly, they were surprised. The Europeans on Mauritius Island and the pigs they brought with them found the birds very delicious. So large numbers of dodos were killed and no living dodos were found on the island in the following years. Later, the samples (标本) of some dodos were brought to England in the 17th century for the further study.
In fact, the extinction (灭绝) of dodos was caused by people. This was how the phrase “as dead as a dodo” came. It teaches us a big lesson. If we are not able to get along with nature, we will lose the things more than we would expect. And we should stop the activities that will be bad for the environment or other animals.

23、Manners at table
The customs(习惯)in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host(主人), he will put more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts(使不安)me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to, because it is considered(认为)bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again until he accepts your offer.
Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is served with beer(啤酒)by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some juice(果汁)if you have.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States to deal with us, you’d better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
【1】From this passage we can see that the writer is ________.
A.a Chinese
B.a Roman
C.an American
D.a European
【2】When a Chinese host kept putting more food onto the writer’s plate, the writer felt ________.

【5】“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” means “________.”

C.you should do things like Romans do
D.you should get used to the local customs where you go
24、Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother’s Camp. There, husbands and children are not allowed. Why would a woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some women say they need time to be alone.
At Mother’s Camp a woman has space to herself. She can sleep, read or watch TV, and no one will bother(打扰) her. No children will ask, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” No husband(丈夫) will say, “Oh, dear, I can’t find any clean socks.” In fact, almost 50% of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home to a second job---taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.
In the United States, working wives(妻子) do about 75% of the housework. Many of their husbands say they want to help. But then they burn the rice or they can’t find the pans(平底锅). They ask so many questions that their wives think it is easier to do the job themselves.
Some women go to Mother’s Camp just to get a break from housework. For two days they don’t cook, they don’t clean, they don’t look after their children and husbands. What do they do? They enjoy warm, sunny weather, walking, swimming or boating in a clear blue lake and sing songs around the campfire. They relax away from home.
