24、 In a faraway country, there were two carpenters (木匠) who were both so good at their job that no one could tell who was better.
One day, the country's king thought of a way to figure out which one was better. He would have them compete against each other in a contest. The winner would become the official royal(皇家的)carpenter.
The king sent for the two carpenters and the contest began. The carpenters were given three days to carve (雕刻) a wooden mouse. Whoever carved the most lifelike mouse would be the winner.
The first carpenter carved a fine mouse with vivid (生动的) and lifelike feature. The second carpenter's mouse, however, looked quite rough. In fact, it hardly even looked like a mouse at all.
The king and his ministers (大臣) agreed that the first carpenter was the winner.
The second carpenter said, "This judgment is unfair. We should ask a cat which mouse looks the most realistic. Cats can recognize mice much better than humans, after all."
The king thought this was a good idea. He ordered his ministers to catch several cats and bring them to judge (评判) the carpenters' mice. Surprisingly, all of the cats were more attracted to the second carpenter's mouse.
The king asked the second carpenter, "How did you make the cats believe that your mouse looked more real?" The carpenter said, "Your Majesty, if you look closely, you can see that I carved a mouse holding a fishbone! The cats care not about how real it looks, but how delicious it might taste."
【1】Whose carved mouse looked quite rough?
A.Neither of the two carpenters' B.Both of the two carpenters'

【3】What’s the correct order of the following things?

25、Whenever we watch a horror movie and something scary happens, we might close our eyes and scream. However, chances are that we will continue to watch and enjoy the movie anyway. So why can fear be so much fun?
According to a recent study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh in the US, watching horror movies can raise our mood, unite people and increase our confidence.
In the study, 262 adults were asked to enter a haunted house. Inside, they were met with a series of intense(紧张的) things over a course of 35 minutes, and were asked to record their feelings both before and after the experience. At the same time, the researchers also monitored their brain waves. According to the researchers, the participants(参加者) were more likely to be happier and less anxious and tired after they left the house. That's because in this intense condition, their brains produce more dopamine.
What’s more, taking advantages of this sensation may bring people together . Experiencing the haunted house is just like running a 5 kilometers race or tackling a difficult climbing wall. This means that people in scary situations may be more likely to be uncertain and depend on others for support. “ We build a special closeness with those we are with when we are in an excited state,” said Margee Keer ,one of the study's authors, told The Atlantic. “ We're social and emotional beings---- we need each other in times of stress. So the fact that our bodies have evolved to make sure we feel close to those we’re with when afraid makes sense.”
In addition, being scared in a safe place could be a good way to increase our confidence. “Being scared in a safe place is a source of enjoyment and makes us feel good physically and can even serve as a confidence boost by reminding us that we can make it through a scary situation. We are strong.” Keer told The Independent.

A. fear can help us increase our confidence.

A. Everyone should watch horror movies.
B. We feel close to those who’re with us when we feel anxious.

26、Fairy tale(童话) fiction or not?
One hot debate topic from I Can I Bibi (《奇葩说》) has become popular on Weibo: Should parents tell their children that fairy tales are fake(假的)? Some people think we shouldn’t. Fairy tales give kids hope and teach life lessons. But others think that children need the ability to distinguish (区分) real from fake, and this role is best played by their parents. What’s your opinion?
YES
Hu Enqi, 16
There is no doubt that the world of fairy tales is beautiful, but the real world is cruel (残酷的). If children are always deep in fairy tales, they might not adjust(调节) themselves to society. That’s why there are so many “giant babies” in society. It is parents’ duty to tell children that beauty and darkness are coexistent(共存的). They need to be stronger to adapt to (适应) society.
Li Ziyi, 16
It’s important to tell kids the wisdom in fairy tales, not whether or not they’re fake. If I’m a parent, I will tell my kids: “Dear, the Queen’s poisoned apple is fake, but in our daily lives, fake apples may be many other seductions (诱惑) that you need to be careful of.” Fairy tales can never solve all problems. After all, dangers are always present in both fairy tales and reality (现实).
NO
Yuan Siyi, 16
Not every fairy tale is fake — they’re from our lives. The essence (本质) of fairy tales is to teach children the most basic truths based on the real world. The content of fairy tales is not meaningless. Parents could look on them as partners to children when they grow up. Children will understand the truth step by step.
Hu Pei, 16
As a kid bathed in fairy tales, I don’t want to be told that they are fake. Fairy tales get kids to read, help shape their world outlook, encourage their imaginations and give them entertainment. Even if parents tell the kids the cruel reality, they may miss the point. Instead, they may be filled with fear of the future and the world, which is not our purpose.
【1】According to the passage, “the giant babies” are ___________.
A.those babies who can’t grow up
B.those babies who are big in shape
C.those adults who can adapt to society well
D.those adults who can’t distinguish real from fake
【2】According to Li Ziyi, ___________.
A.we shouldn’t tell children fairy tales are fake
B.some fairy tales have wisdom while others don’t
C.there are many dangers in different shapes in reality
D.“poisoned apples” needn’t be afraid of because they are fake
【3】From the passage, we can know _________.
A.in fairy tales everything is beautiful and good
B.fairy tales can give kids hope and teach life lessons
C.fairy tales have nothing to do with the real world
D.fairy tales mainly need to tell kids cruelty of reality
27、Bell was a British teacher to deaf people. He was born in Scotland in 1847 and went to school in London. Bell was interested in helping deaf people to learn to speak. He taught people how to use their mouths to make the sounds needed for talking.
Bell’s family moved to Canada in 1870 and to the USA in 1871. For several years he taught the people who could not speak in Boston. But at the same time he was developing a way to use electricity to send the sounds of talking along a wire, and he made the first telephone in June, 1875.
The telephone developed quickly in the USA over the next few years. The Bell Telephone Company started in 1877, and in 1878 the first telephone centre was built in New York. 28、任务型阅读
阅读材料,将A、B、C、D四个标题与标题后的四段文字配对,然后完成50题。
A. Remembering the reader B. Writing the first sentence C Reading and rewriting D. Thinking on paper |
Sooner or later everyone has to write something like a thank-you note, a report at a meeting , a complaint or an apology. If you hate writing assignments in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you’re facing a tiger. How to write it? There’s no mystery.Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.
【1】
Sit down with a pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start thinking about what you want to say, why it’s important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader.Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.
【2】
Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because if it can’t, the reader isn’t going to read on.Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and that answers the reader’s question “What’s in it for me?” If you can’t do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.
【3】
Short, simple words are better than long words.Short sentences are better than long sentences.Remember that the goal is to communicate, not to express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it.Too much information makes you lose readers before they understand what you want to say.
【4】
Read what you have written out aloud, and listen for any awkward sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite.Back off a little bit from what you’re writing. It’s an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day later.
【5】How do you write a good article? Please write down one of your suggestions.(不少于5个单词)
