The Good Son
Once there was a jeweller, who was known as a good man. People always bought jewelries from him.
One day, a rich man and his wife came to buy some diamonds (钻石) which would be put on a special dress for their mother. She would wear it for her eightieth-birthday party.
The couple told the jeweller what they wanted, and offered him an honest price. He replied that he could not let them see the jewels at that moment, and asked them to come back later. However, they wanted the diamonds without delay (耽搁). They also thought that the jeweller might be trying to get more money for the diamonds. So they offered him double, then three times, what the diamonds were worth. But he still refused to give them the diamonds. They went away, very angry.
Some hours after, the jeweller went to them and gave them the diamonds. They offered him the last price for the diamonds, which was three times what the diamonds were worth. But the jeweller said, “I will only accept the first price that you offered this morning.”
“Why, then, did you not sell us the diamonds right away?” they asked in surprise. He replied, “My father had the key to the box where the diamonds were kept. He was asleep, and I did not want to wake him. He is old and every hour of sleep does him good. For all the gold in the world, I would not disrespect my father or cause him discomfort.” The couple were deeply moved by the man’s words, so the husband said to him,

25、 Hobbies are also a way of making friends. Starting a new school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see your friends again. But the most exciting of all is that the new term is a chance to take up new hobbies. It is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays.
Most schools offer different kinds of hobby classes. Students take them in their free periods or after school. You have to pay for some classes and other classes are free. For example, I once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics class my school offered. But when I learnt how to play the drums, my parents had to pay for the lessons.
The most popular extra classes at my school were piano lessons and drama club. Both classes offered exams that students could take. Students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed than those without any. But the students with hobbies left school with many extra skills.
I haven't continued any of the hobbies I began at school. But I have never regretted taking them. My best friend today is someone I met in my gymnastics class.

28、Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)
How can you be sure that you know w【1】 you know? That may sound silly but it’s really a serious question. Have you ever “thought” you knew something but when it came time to write in the exam you discovered that you r【2】 didn’t “know” it, after all.
Strategies (策略) you can use
When that happens, it isn’t because you have a bad memory, it’s because the things you are trying to r【3】 haven’t been properly learned.
Luckily, there are strategies you can use to help you learn difficult things. And scientists say that there is even a part of your brain that can “predict” whether this new knowledge has been completely u【4】.
Judgement of learning
Scientists call this predicting, the “judgement of learning”. It really just means looking over your own shoulder w【5】 you are studying and asking yourself, “Do I really get this?” And if you don’t, it means adjusting your “strategy” until you do.
Here’s one strategy:
Set a short-term goal to learn something.
Study as you normally would.
Answer some test questions to g【6】 some feedback.
Use that feedback to work on your weak points.
In the driver’s seat
Developing the ability to “judge” your own learning needs a lot of p【7】. But it can be a very useful skill. It puts you in the driver’s seat and in charge of your own studies. In effect, it lets you know that you really know what you think you know. You know?
