24、At 9 a.m. on October 15, 2003, our country launched (发射) its first manned (有人的) space-ship, Shenzhou V, into space at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province. It took Yang Liwei and his spaceship about 21 hours to circle the earth 14 times. Yang Liwei is China’s first astronaut. “I’m feeling very good in space, and it looks wonderful here,” said Yang, “I have looked at our beautiful earth and I have recorded all that I have seen here.”
China has become the third country in the world to send a person into space after the former Soviet Union(前苏联) and the United States. China is now planning its next launch. Shenzhou VI will be into space within(在……之内) the next years, it may take three astronauts. We are all proud of our motherland.

25、Dear Ms. Roberts,
I am writing to let you know that I ran over your dog on Friday afternoon.
The accident happened at the crossing of Ocean Drive and Bridge Street, directly in front of the RSL Club.
On that Friday, one of my students had suddenly fallen ill. I telephoned her doctor and described the situation, and he suggested that she should be brought to the hospital right away. He believed that the student’s leg had been broken and explained to me the seriousness of the situation. I had to get her to the hospital quickly.
During the trip I passed by your house. Suddenly your dog ran out into the road and into the front of my car. I stopped the car and ran around looking for the dog but it had run away. I knocked on your door but I could see that no one was home. I could not see where the dog had gone, and with my student so ill I had no choice but to leave the scene(现场)and drive on.
You must allow me to pay for his medical care. I would be thankful if you could make a list of all costs resulting from this accident. I plan to visit and offer my apologies(歉意)in person.

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most impressive historical sites. It was built around 1450 by the Incas, who ruled most of South America at that time. They called themselves children of the Sun.
Located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, at 8000 feet above sea level, the “City of the Incas” was mysteriously abandoned (遗弃) just 100 years after it was built. This was when the Spanish were beginning their conquest of the Inca Empire, in the 1530s. There is no evidence that the Spanish ever reached mountaintop city, so many believe that the site of the city was given up because of a small pox epidemic(天花疫情).
The city was almost forgotten until 1911, when it was discovered by an American historian, Hiram Bingham, after he heard rumors (传言) of its existence. Bingham was led to the site by local farmers and was amazed by what he saw, which seemed like an unbelievable dream. He wondered if anyone would believe what he had found.
Though the surrounding jungle had overgrown the site, what remained was impressive. The city had been built on a faraway mountaintop, often covered in clouds. Forty rows of falling terraces (梯田) hugged the steep mountainside, each over 10 feet high, and linked together by over 3000 stone steps. Among the city were what appeared to be neighborhoods of homes, and beautiful stone buildings that are thought to be temples. Even today, the mystery remains as to the purpose of these temples, how the city was used and what its citizens did.
Machu Picchu has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Every year, thousands of people travel to Peru to admire its magnificent stonework and breathtaking design. What they see is a wonderful harmony (和谐) between the city and the landscape around it.

27、“You are what you eat,” says the old saying. So how can we know what food is healthy? Unluckily, a lot of food that looks good may have pollution. Where is the pollution from? It has something to do with how people produce food: growing it on the farm, processing (加工)it in factories, and making it ready for you to eat.
Here’s what happens:
Most farmers use chemicals(化学药品) to stop their crops from getting sick. Many of these chemicals remain in the food that you eat. Some people believe this may cause cancer. These chemicals may also pollute water and air, and kill animals and even people by accident.
Most drinks are just flavored water (加味水). Every drink coming in plastic bottles which you then throw away means a waste. Sugary drinks make you fat.
In the factories, much of what you eat and drink gets messed. Often things are put into food to make it delicious and look good but they might be harmful to people. And some food like meat often gets polluted by bacteria. What you can do:
Try to get organic (有机的)food. Organic food doesn’t have any ingredients (成分)that are bad for the land, air or water. Don’t eat processed food or drinks. Eat fresh food whenever you can and cook at home.
