四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A computer program that could help catch and even translate messages from aliens in outer space has been developed by a British scientist.

If aliens are discovered one day, scientists fear their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University in Britain has come up with a program that can figure out the structure (结构) of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.

Dr Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database (数据库) of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have its own structure. “Language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be hard to use,” he told New Scientist magazine.

Research has shown that it is possible to know if a signal carries a language rather than a picture or music. Dr Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way to pick out what might be words and sentences. Because languages have different word orders, Dr Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.

If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientists would then be able to see if it’s similar to any human language, or a mix of the languages.

However, Dr Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a “code (密码) book”.

1Why did Dr Elliott come up with the program?

A.To learn more about outer space. B.To compare an alien language to human languages.

C.To develop a new language. D.To help translate messages from aliens.

2According to Dr Elliott, what’s the first step of understanding an alien language?

A.Coming up with a program. B.Knowing its structure.

    C.Understanding aliens. D.Discovering aliens.

3What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?

A.Some necessary conditions for making the program work.

B.Dr Elliott’s findings about the differences between human languages.

C.Three important functions of the program.

D.The number of sentence structures of human languages.

4How does the program work when it receives a message from aliens?

A.Mix the message with 60 human languages.

B.Translate the message and send it to the database.

C.Pick out the sentence structure and translate it.

D.Compare the message to the database of 60 human languages.

5What can we infer from the passage?

A.Not all languages have their own structures.

B.To translate alien languages, there is much work to do.

C.The structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages.

D.Alien languages are signals carrying pictures and music.

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home and in concerts halls. As time goes by  music changes.

Traditional music is part of our culture so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music which is loved by many young people however is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.

Before radio and TV were invented music could only be heard live that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances. The best musicians were very busy so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.

One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.

Music traditional or modern Chinese or international seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go but nothing changes our love for good music.

  • 27、Museums, live music and malls—Chinese cities offer everything that a young person might want. But there are many people who don’t have time to enjoy these things. They follow what is called the “996” work schedule—starting work at 9 a.m. and finishing at 9 p.m., six days a week.

The “996” work schedule recently became a heated topic of discussion online after a computer programmer set up a website called “996ICU”. According to the website, the “996” work schedule is unhealthy and could cause people to end up in an intensive care unit (ICU). This work schedule is common at Chinese tech companies like Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei. Most “996” workers do not receive overtime(加班)pay.

Many tech industry workers have complained about this schedule. “I worked ‘996’ for nine months,” Zhang said, who used to work as a programmer. “I couldn’t sleep because of the pressure. So, I gave up the job at last.” However, the bosses of some tech companies think the “996” work schedule is reasonable. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, said it’s a “huge blessing(福气)” for young workers to work “996”.

“If you don’t do ‘996’ when you’re young, when will you?” Ma said. “If you don’t put in more time and energy than others, how will you achieve the success you want?” Many people have questioned Ma’s thinking. In an article in People’s Daily, the writer said, “Valuing hard work does not mean it’s right to force workers to work overtime.”

Cui Zhendong, a lawyer, told China Daily that it is against the law to use a compulsory (强制的) “996” work schedule. China’s Labor Law《劳动法》clearly states that workers should work no more than eight hours a day or no more than 44 hours a week.

【1】The “996” work schedule requires a person to work ________.

    A.9 hours a day

    B.18 hours a day

    C.54 hours a week

    D.72 hours a week

【2】Why do many workers complain about this schedule?

A.Because they have no time to go to the hospital.

B.Because their health has been influenced.

C.Because they don’t get enough pay.

    D.Because they can’t work well.

【3】According to the report of People’s Daily, bosses ________.

A.worked “996” to achieve their success

B.should support the “996” work schedule

C.understand the value of hard work better than workers

D.shouldn’t force workers to work overtime

【4】What do we know from the passage?

A.“996ICU” was set up to help workers get overtime pay.

B.It is against the law to force workers to work “996”.

C.It’s necessary for young workers to work “996”.

D.Working “996” is an unusual problem in China.
