二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、

Grey clouds move as low as smoke over the treetops at Lolo Pass. The ground is white. The day is June 10.It has been snowing for the past four days in the Bitterroot Mountains.Wayne Fairchild is getting worried about our trek over the Lolo Trail-95 miles from Lolo Montana to Weippe in Idaho, across the roughest country in the West. Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ago by snowstorms on the Lolo.Today Fairchild is nervously checking the weather reports. He has agreed to take me across the toughest, middle section of the trail.

When Lewis climbed on top of Lemhi Pass,140 miles south of Missoula,on Aug.12,1805,he was astonished by what was in front of him;“high mountain chains still to the West of us with their tops partially covered with snow.”Nobody in what was then the US knew the Rocky Mountains existed, with peaks twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East.

Today their pathway through those mountains holds more attraction than any other ground over which they traveled, for its raw wilderness is an evidence to the character of two cultures:the explorers who braved its hardships and the Native Americans who prize and conserve the path as a sacred (神圣的)gift. It remains today the same condition as when Lewis and Clark walked it.

The Lolo is passable only from July to mid-September.Our luck is holding with the weather, although the snow keeps getting deeper. As we climb to Indian Post Office, the highest point on the trail at 7,033 ft,we have covered 13 miles in soft snow, and we hardly have enough energy to make dinner. After a meal of chicken,I sit on a rock on top of the ridge (山脊).There is no light visible in any direction, not even another campfire. For four days we do not see another human being. We are occupied with the things that mix fear with joy.In our imagination we have finally caught up with Lewis and Clark.

1 We learn from the text that before 1805 .

A.The Rocky Mountains were wholly covered with snow

B.there were no people living in the western part of America

C.no Americans knew of the existence of the Rocky Mountains

D.the Appalachians were the western frontier of the United States

2We learn from the text that the Lolo Pass  .

    A.has changed a lot since 1805

B.is the meeting point of three cultures

C.remains much the same as it was 200 years ago

D.now attracts a large number of tourists to visit

3Judging from the text,Lewis and Clark were most probably  .

    A.two native Indians

B.explorers of the early 19th century

C.merchants who did business with the Indians

D.travelers whose curiosity took them over the Lolo Pass

4We can infer from the text that when crossing the Lolo Pass the author  .

    A.was attempting the impossible

B.was trying to set a world record

C.was following the trail of Lewis and Clark

D.was fighting with weather and taking unnecessary risks

  • 22、From the Karakoram Mountain to the Indus River plain, Pakistan is home to many breathtaking landscapes.

    Kaghan Valley

Kaghan Valley is a place of fairytales. According to one version of a local legend, a prince of Persia fell in love with a fairy princess in the valley. • 23、   Two teenage girls have been honored by the Indian government after it was discovered that they had pretended to be boys for five years to run their father’s barbershop when he became too ill to work.

Jyoti Kumari, 18, and her 16-year-old sister, Neha, took over their father’s salon in their village in Uttar Pradesh after he became ill in 2014. The shop closed at first but it was the family’s only source of income, forcing the girls to try to run it themselves.

“Customers were skeptical about having their hair or moustaches trimmed by young women, while others did not behave well towards us,” Jyoti told The Guardian. “For them, girls running a male salon were unacceptable, so we decided to change our whole get-up so that none could identify us.”

The girls cut their hair shot, wore men’s clothes and adopted the male names Deepak and Raju. Several people in their village of about 100 houses knew their real identities, but for the next few years, most customers from surrounding areas had no idea. Neha said, “You could not identify me even today.”

They earned at least 400 rupees ($4) a day, enough to pay for their father’s treatment and support the family.

As the years passed, they have slowly revealed their real identities to more customers. “Now we have gained enough confidence and don’t fear anyone,” Neha said. “The majority of the customers have come to know that we are girls.” Jyoti has started to let her hair grow.

After a journalist from the nearby city of Gorakhpur published a story about the girls in a Hindi newspaper, they were honored by government officers.

“It’s a brilliant story of how one can survive by battling against all difficulties,” said Abhishek Pandey, an official. “The sisters should be the inspiration for society and their story must be made known to the public.”

【1】Why did the girls run the barbershop?

A.They expected to hide their identities.

B.They had no other ways to make a living.

D.They carried out their father’s last wish.

  • 24、Held in Valencia, La Tomatina is a tomato-throwing activity that causes the number of people to increase to more than 40,000 in a town of just 9,000 persons.

The festival takes place on the town’s main square. At 11 o’clock, the third Wednesday in August every year, a large pole() with a ham tied to the end of it is raised into the air, and there is a mad climb as people struggle against each other to pull it down. Once this is achieved, a rocket goes skywards and more than 100 tons of ripe tomatoes are tipped from trucks to the waiting crowd. For precisely one hour, until a second rocket is fired, everyone joins in a cheerful tomato battle.

La Tomatina began in 1945, but it is not known why. Locals have many theories, including the popular tale of angry townsfolk attacking city councilmen(议员) during a town celebration. However, it could also have started because of anything from an anti-France protest or simply a fun food fight between friends. Whichever way it started, the townsfolk of Valencia enjoyed it so much that it was repeated year after year, finally becoming an officially recognized celebration in 1952. Despite being cancelled briefly during the 1970s for having no religious significance, it has returned every year since then.

Most people come for the day, arriving on the morning train from Valencia and heading back in the afternoon. But if you want the full La Tomatina experience, stay for the week-long celebration which involves music, dancing, parades and fireworks. The night before the fight, a cooking competition is held where women traditionally dress in white, and men without shirts altogether.

Protection for the fight is recommended—wear old clothes and shoes and a pair of glasses to protect your eyes. What you don’t bring to La Tomatina is also important. The crazy tomato-throwers attack each other with all their strength: cameras are seen as positive invitations to throw at the owner.
