22、Morogoro, Tanzia, British research scientist, Dr. Donna Kean is training 170 rats to be sent into earthquake ruins to do vital work in finding earthquake survivors. The project has trained about seven rats to date, taking around two weeks to get the rescue rats up to speed. These rescue rats are sent into mock(模拟的)earthquake ruins with tiny backpacks that contain microphones, video gears, and location trackers. These tools will allow the rescue teams to communicate with earthquake survivors in real-time.

“I train these clever creatures to save victims trapped in collapsed buildings after earthquakes. We kit them out with a rat backpack, and train them to activate a switch when they find a victim and come back for a tasty treat. ” posted Dr Donna Kean on Twitter on May 26, 2022.

Dr. Kean expressed how the rescue rats are ideal for this type of work saying, “Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get victims buried in rubble. ” The highly swift rats never set off landmines and their natural swiftness makes them ideal for use in hard-to-navigate disaster zones. Their suitability for this work goes further, with rats being good at surviving in different environments and living off of anything. The rescue rats are even being trained to respond to beeps that call them back to their base.

Dr. Kean＇s team collaborates(合作) with the non-profit organization APOLO for their “Hero Rats” project. These “Hero Rats” are set to start working with a search and rescue team in Turkey, joining earthquake rescue efforts in the high-risk area. The group of 170 rats is being trained for additional projects involving landmines, tuberculosis (肺结核), and even sniffing out Brucellosis, an infectious disease that impacts farm animals. Dr. Kean feels hopeful about her project’s promising results and is excited to be the only organization in this space working with this species.

Tandem Skydiving

Tandem skydiving is required if this is your first time skydiving. After filling out paperwork and watching a short video, you will be ready to make your skydive. Somewhere around 11,500 feet you will be secured to your tandem instructor. The door will open and you exit the plane.

Your freefall with your instructor will last for approximately 40-50 seconds. We can almost guarantee this will be the most exciting minute of your life as you reach the speed of around 120 mph, falling for about two miles back to the earth!

Static Line Courses

Once you have made your tandem skydiving, you can move on to our Static Line Program. The Static Line Jump is the traditional way to learn to skydive. We have classes throughout the year. Every student will be led through the entire day by a licensed instructor. Never does the student feel unattended.

Once training is over, students will make their first jump on that very same day! If the weather does not cooperate, you can come back the next day, or we will re-schedule a time to make your skydive.

24、Dr. Elsa Olivetti has always been interested in how materials science can change the way we store energy. When she started her work at MIT, she was excited about discovering the secrets of sustainable battery production.

During her research, her main focus was on a special kind of battery, called solid-state batteries, and a material named LLZO. She discovered a big challenge: finding and getting a special material called tantalum, which is not easy to find but necessary for the production of LLZO. This inspired her to look at the whole process of making batteries beyond the laboratory, from getting the materials to producing the final product.

They found that if we want to use more electric cars in the future, we need to get much better at producing and delivering materials like tantalum. Dr. Olivetti stresses that her work is not meant to replace traditional methods. Instead, it’s meant to help make the battery production better by looking broadly at the things that could make energy storage efficient. Looking ahead, Dr. Olivetti remains committed to improving sustainable energy storage.
