二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9:00 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pajama’s(睡衣). Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.

All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep.

This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds” ------ the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls, this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

【1】What does the author stress in Paragraph 1 ?

    A. Many students are absent from class.

    B. Students are very tired on Monday mornings.

    C. Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.

    D. Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.

【2】Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?

A . Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.

    B. Students don’t sleep well because of alerting systems.

C .One’s body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.

    D. Adolescents’ delayed sleep/wake cycle isn’t the preferred pattern.

【3】Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “classified”?

    A. Criticized B. Grouped

    C. Organized   D. Named

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Functions of the body clock.

    B. The “night owl” phenomenon.

    C. Human beings’ sleep behaviour.

    D. The school schedule of “early birds”.

  • 22、Do you know the proverb “no pain, no gain”? It gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we’ re putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true?

When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where, instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious cycle (恶性循环) that traps us into ineffective revision, or poor progress fueling further annoyance.

Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(使人分心的事). It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just lazy company. They constantly try to keep others in conversation, while studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score of games rather than productive revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation. And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

【1】What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

    A.To introduce effective studying means.

B.To encourage us to work as hard as possible.

C.To remind us to balance activities and study.

D.To discuss the importance of family company.

【2】What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Good ideas are needed in terms of progress.

B.Ways that interest us can lead to effective revision.

C.Shutting ourselves away can help concentrate on work.

D.With study techniques, revision is interesting and easy for certain.

【3】What does the last sentence in Paragraph 3 imply?

A.One should learn from certain activities that interest him.

B.Playing video games is helpful for effective study.

C.One shouldn’t study with the company of a video game player.

D.The more time one spends in playing games, the higher test scores one will get.

【4】What should you do if you are studying in a noisy environment?

A.Give up others company at once.

B.Think twice before taking any action.

C.Give indication of not wanting to be interrupted.

D.Force yourself to be accustomed to the environment.

  • 23、The Shiants, remote, cliff-edged islands off the coast of Scotland are home to 350,000 seabirds. This is the starting point for National Geographic contributor Adam Nicolson’s new book, The Seabirds Cry. Celebrating 10 species in detail, he describes the unbelievable recovery of seabirds and the many adaptations that have enabled them to survive and navigate the oceans, while sounding a loud call for their conservation among severely falling numbers.

Speaking from his home in Sussex, England, Nicolson explains why guillemot (海雀) colonies are information exchange centers: how new research is showing that those long-distance travelers. The shearwaters, "smell" their way across the globe; and what we can do to support seabird populations.

National Geographic has just kicked off Year of the Bird with a cover story by Jonathan Franzen titled "Why Birds Matter ". The beginning of Year of the Bird is beneficial to birds. Nicolson said, "Ill ask you the same question-why? For me, these seabirds are symbols of uniqueness. There is so much on the land where the rest of the living world seems to be controlled by us, but when you go to seabird colonies, there is this pumping, loud and raging uniqueness. It's a glance of the untouched world. ”

“The reason why it's untouched is that, until recently, we have not controlled the oceans that the seabirds depend on. More of them have survived in greater numbers than most other creatures in the developed world, where huge amounts of the animal kingdom have been removed by us. And so one reason these birds matter is that they are symbols of what the world might be if we hadn't done so much damage to it. "He added.

“Seabirds also tend to disappear; they’re not reliably of our world, due to their migration and habits of life. Very deep in our consciousness is a sense that they are ambassadors from another world. And witnessing and feeling that is, I think, one of the great enlargers of life.” Nicolson explained.

1What is the book The Seabirds Cry mainly about?

    A. Seabirds on an island.   B. The extinction of seabirds.

    C. The importance of seabird.   D. Seabirds in the author's hometown.

2What can we learn from Nicolson’s speech?

    A. The wisdom of seabirds.   B. Ways to protect seabird.

    C. Migration routes of seabirds.   D. The harder situation of seabirds.

3What does the underlined phrase "kicked off" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Watched out for   B. Cut across

    C. Expressed   D. Started

4Which is a lucky thing for seabirds in Nicolson’s view?

    A. The sea is too large to be polluted.

    B. The sea isn't entirely governed by humans.

    C. The seabirds are able to fit the environment.

    D. The seabirds are living in the developed world.

  • 24、I still remember my father’s embarrassment the day when he was invited to have dinner at a colleague’s house. Freshly arriving in Brazil, and not being able to look up on the Internet, he offended his hosts by making a hand gesture — a circle with the thumb and index finger. He had always understood it to mean “OK”, but in Brazil, it meant something different.

The episode was swiftly forgotten. My father’s colleague understood that he probably wasn’t yet aware of the local meaning of the gesture. He gently explained it meant something rude, and then it was filed away under “things not to be done in Rio”.

I was reminded myself in China. After I replied to a friend’s WeChat message with a Van Gogh sticker that I thought meant “keep fighting”, another friend told me I used it wrong.

“The Chinese version is a bit different,” she said, taking out her phone and showing to me. “See these characters? They mean ‘I will hit you!’”

Life is full of crossed meanings. In India, you sign to someone to come over with your palm down, not up. And in the Middle East, you never use your left hand for anything public.

As adults, we understand that even if it hurts, a mistake is only an insult (侮辱) when it is deliberate. Yet, many conflicts come from misunderstanding, and history is full of the unfortunate outcomes of cross-cultural communication.

My father’s pre-Internet Brazilian mistake was forgiven because of context — he had just arrived and he didn’t know its local meaning. But when context is absent or simply differently understood — especially in the social media — perhaps it is time we all think twice before typing or talking, especially when the consequences can be more severe than the misuse of a WeChat sticker.

【1】What is the topic of the text?

    A.Cultural difference.

    B.Language and culture.

    C.Sign language.

    D.Good manners.

【2】What does the author want to show by telling his father’s story?

A.The OK sign means differently in Brazil.

    B.Cross-cultural mistakes are common.

C.The Internet helps to avoid mistakes.

    D.Misunderstandings lead to bad results.

【3】What did the author mean to do by using the Van Gogh sticker?

    A.To greet his friend.

    B.To encourage his friend.

    C.To threaten his friend.

D.To make fun of his friend.

【4】What might result in if there is no context?

    A.Cultural conflicts.

    B.Forgiveness.

    C.Cultural gaps.

    D.Mutual respect.
