  • 21、Deveza’s mother was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant(肾移植). Deveza wanted to donate one of her own kidneys—but she was turned down because she might develop the same health problems as her mother in later life.

Deveza came up with a different plan. In 2017, she started the world’s first paired exchange of different organs between living donors, exchanging half her liver(肝) for someone else’s kidney. A case study of the organ exchange has now been published, and the surgeons who were involved are calling for more exchanges like this. “You can imagine the enormous impact for mixed organ extended chains,” says John Roberts, a surgeon at University of California, San Francisco.

Most organ transplants come from people who have died, but there are never enough organs. As most people can manage with just one of their kidneys, people with kidney failure are increasingly receiving donated organs from relatives or friends. If someone wants to donate but their immune(免疫的) system is unsuited, doctors may be able to find pairs of would-be donors who can each give a kidney to the other’s relative.

When Deveza was looking into such chains, she came across research describing the idea of trading a kidney with the only other organ generally taken from a living donor—the liver. She suggested the idea to many hospitals before she finally contacted Roberts, who saw the idea’s potential.

Deveza was assessed to be in good enough health to donate part of her liver. It then took 18 months to find Annie Simmons, in Idaho, whose liver was unsuitable to use as a transplant for her sister with severe liver disease. They drew up a plan: Simmons would donate a kidney to Deveza’s mother, and in return, Deveza would give half her liver to Simmons’ sister. The hospital gave the go-ahead and the four operations took place on the same day successfully.

The team hope that the ground-breaking case will inspire more people to consider doing the same. Roberts says that direct exchanges involving two donors could enable up to thirty extra living-donor liver transplants a year—a ten percent increase.

【1】What did Deveza do to save her mother?

    A.Carrying out a case study.

    A.It discouraged organ donation.

    B.It brought two families together.

    C.It met with widespread approval.

    D.It produced a desirable outcome.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.My Liver, Your Kidney

  • 23、I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan (贷款) we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month.

And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family.

But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)

My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.

Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

【1】The author decided to live a car-free life partly because ______.

    A. he was hurt in a terrible car accident

    B. most families chose to go car-free

    C. the traffic jam was unbearable for him

    D. the cost of a new car was too much

【2】What is the attitude of the author’s family toward his plan?

    A. Disapproving.    B. Supportive.

    C. Unconcerned.     D. Optimistic.

【3】What did the author suggest his daughters do about their friends’ opinion?

    A. Take their advice.   B. Argue against it.

    C. Leave it alone.    D. Think it over.

【4】What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?

    A. Life without a car is a little bit hard.

    B. Life cannot go without a car.

    C. A car-free life does not suit everyone.

    D. His life gets improved without a car.

  • 24、The average bear, it seems, is getting over smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a comb. Now it appears that some can count too.

Jennifer Vonk, of Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots (点) on a computer screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws (爪子).

As the researchers report in Animal Behavior, the bears did best with patterns where the coloured dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured area. This could be explained by the bears’ distinguishing the different areas of colour rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger area.

Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead him by moving the total coloured area of the dots at the same time.

It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the complex social systems that contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help.

【1】What task did the scientists set for the three bears?

    A.Distinguishing different dot patterns.

B.Figuring out different colours of dots.

C.Putting the dots into differently coloured groups.

D.Picking out the group with a larger number of acts.

【2】For the bears, the task was easier when ______.

A.the coloured dots were moving slowly

B.the dot patterns were regular in shape

C.the dots followed a path on the screen

D.more dots covered a larger coloured area

【3】Why do the bears have high degree or intelligence?

A.They have to survive by themselves.

B.They learn skills from other friends.

C.They feed on a diverse range of food.

    D.They have complex social networks.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Bears Taught to Distinguish Colours

B.Three Bears Learned How to Count

C.New Evidence of Bear Intelligence Found

D.The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus
