26、Back in the days when I wrote my first songs, I hated my voice. I saw myself as a songwriter and guitarist but never a singer! I continued to write songs, and to search for the perfect singer. After a few years I did discover a singer, so we started a project together. We held a few concerts, and put a lot of work into it. She forces me to sing some songs at concerts myself, so I started going to a bar to practice them. This was my first, small breakthrough.
One day she came round to my flat and informed me that she could no longer work with me, and also that the bar owner at the open mic venue(麦克风场地) had replaced us at short notice because some New York jazz star happened to be in town, and was available that evening to perform. The first bit of news made me sad and disappointed, but the second made me angry.
However, that same evening, with as much determination as I could muster (集合), I resolved to play three new songs at the bar, just as I had planned before. I was quite nervous, but I dragged myself down to the bar and sang those songs! I never felt so liberated(无拘束的). That night I couldn’t get to sleep. I was simply astonished, hardly believing that I was a person who acted so courageously, and that I’d been able to sing my songs myself.
Since then I’ve begun to encourage others to adopt a similar approach when they aren’t able to see their own potential. One example is an amateur fiddler (小提琴手) who could barely bring herself to lift her instrument to play in front of people. I forced her to ignore her fear, and simply get on with it. Now, a year or two later, she is a passionate, happy performer in front of any crowd!
Once you get the ball rolling in yourself, you can start inspiring those around you.

27、Most parents realize that a diet of soda and candy isn’t a healthy choice, but what should they do if their children are picky eaters who refuse fruit and vegetables? There are ways to help kids eat healthily and avoid involving many fights at the dinner table.
Jane E. Brody wrote an article for The New York Times in August 2015. The articled title is Another Approach to Raising Healthy Eaters. In this article, she shares her experience as a child who was a picky eater. She provides some useful views for parents who have children that are very picky about what foods they will eat.
It turns out that demanding (要求)that a child eat something doesn’t really work well. The command to “clean your plate” can end up teaching children that it is normal to continue eating after their stomach is full. This habit may continue into adulthood, and can lead to overweight bodies or food disorders.
Instead, parents can try other methods that might actually influence their children to try new foods. One very simple method is to offer your children a small amount of newly introduced food. A large amount can seem intimidating (令人生畏的).One or two bites might feel less “scary” to try.
Another really easy thing parents can do is to read the ingredients (成分)on food instructions. You might be surprised by the kinds of food that have some form of sugar added to them. One way to be a healthier eater is to reduce the amount of sugar a person eats. Read the ingredient labels, and pick a product that doesn’t have extra sugar added. Start making your own type of your child’ s favorite foods at home instead of buying processed (加工过的)ones. Consider organic foods over the popular, well-known foods that are full of sugar.
Sometimes, all it takes to get a child to eat healthily is to offer a food in a different way. Kids that hate raw cauliflower (菜花)might eat it after the vegetable is roasted. It is possible to turn a head of cauliflower into rice. It looks the same and your child may not notice the difference between it and real rice.

【4】Which of the following can help your kid become a healthy eater?

28、The other day when I was passing a clothing store, I fell in love with a skirt. I knew it would suit me best at first sight. But when I looked at the price tag (标签), I knew I had to give it up.
The love for beautiful clothes has been planted in my heart the day when I was born to be a woman. Several years ago I read an article in a magazine. The article stated that when a woman is at her best time, she is usually poor or tasteless, so she can’t get the right clothes; when she can afford to buy the clothes she likes, she often finds that they do not suit her anymore.
On the way home, I was quite disturbed by such thoughts. It was just a pity, like many other pities. I thought to myself this way. But when I was about to enter the building where I was living, I saw the big mirror placed in the entrance. I saw a girl in it who was in cheap but cleanly washed sweater and jeans. She was rather young, healthy and energetic. For quite a while I was touched by what I had seen in the mirror.
Then I almost forgot the tale: A person without shoes cried until he saw a man without feet. Being young without good clothes is like the person without shoes. I should have felt grateful that I haven’t lost my feet.
【1】How did the author feel when she decided not to buy the skirt?
A. Embarrassed. B. Wise.
C. Regretful. D. Relieved.
【2】The underlined word “She” in Paragraph 3 refers to .
A. the author’s friend B. a stranger
C. the author’s roommate D. the author

A. She came to realize what she really possessed.
B. She was reminded of her devotion to beauty.
C. She didn’t feel at ease when looking into a mirror.
D. She never thought over the other side of a person.
【4】We can learn from the text that the author considered her love for beautiful clothes as .

29、For eight months up to this April, a French bookstore chain had video in a Paris shop fed to software that examines shoppers’ movements and facial expressions for surprise, dissatisfaction, confusion or hesitation. When a shopper walked to the end of an aisle(走廊)only to return with confusion to a bookshelf, the software immediately messaged clerks, who went to help. Sales rose by a tenth.
This could be a chance, some say, for physical retailers(零售商)to trim the advantage that data have long given online sellers. A race is on to work out how best to collect and use emotions data, be it to improve packaging, displays, music, or the content, says Rana June, chief executive of a firm in New York called Lightwave. It measures shoppers’ emotions for consumer-goods firms.
Not everyone is impressed. Nielsen, a consumer research company, views using technology to work out shoppers’ emotions unfavorably. “It is a little annoying,” says Ricardo Gutiérrez, head of shopper insights at Nielsen Colombia in Bogotá.
But it is much cheaper. Nielsen charges roughly $10,000 to interview 25 shoppers about three products. Angus.ai, the Paris start up behind the technology, charges just €59 ($66) a month per camera. What’s more, conventional market research can mislead. People typically “edit” responses to make themselves sound sensible, when purchases are often driven by subconscious(潜意识的) emotions. And surveys can also ask the wrong questions—such as how much people like a product when what really matters is whether, say, it makes them feel attractive.
The notion of “retail therapy(疗法)”,consumers driven to spend when they are feeling blue, is an obvious example of shopping’s emotional side. Whichever store is the first to work out how to spot mildly depressed customers could make big money.
【1】What was the function of the video in the Paris bookstore?
A.Checking its daily sales.
B.Examining its clerks’ work.
C.Monitoring its book storage.
D.Watching its shoppers’ emotions.
【2】What does the underlined word “trim” in paragraph 2 mean?

B.Miss
C.Reduce
D.Introduce.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to Angus.ai’s technology?

B.Supportive
C.Tolerant
D.Opposed.
【4】Why is retail therapy mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To prove shopping is mood-driven.
B.To predict the future of physical retail.
C.To introduce different types of shoppers.
D.To explain the disadvantages of overconsumption.
