四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Social customs and ways of behaving change all the time. Things that were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered to be impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.

Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn’t matter? What about table manners?

The Americans and British people not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to women, and so will most Americans. Promptness(准时) is important both in England and in America. That is, the dinner guest either arrive close to the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay(耽误).

The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or greatly surprised, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

1The underlined phrase make a fool of himself in the first paragraph means .

    A. make himself strong

    B. make himself rich

    C. make himself comfortable

    D. cause himself to seem like a fool

2According to the passage, the American and the British   .

    A. don’t speak the same language

    B. don’t have social customs in common

    C. do share a lot of social customs

    D. do have the exactly same social customs

3If a dinner invitation is for six o’clock, the guest is supposed to arrive at _____ six.

    A. nearly or a minute later than

    B. a quarter past

    C. a quarter to

    D. much later than

4The last example in the passage shows   .

    A. the correct way to use a knife at table

    B. that it is good manners not to make your guest feel foolish or uncomfortable

    C. that social customs and ways of behaving change too fast

    D. that different counties have different customs

5The best title of the passage is .

    A. Different Customs

    B. Social Customs

    C. Customs are Changing Fast

    D. Different Countries, Different Customs

  • 25、The Smallest Life Around Us

Tiny plants and animals live all around us.We cannot see them because they are so small, but they are everywhere. They live in the soil,in the air,and in rivers and oceans. They grow on mountains and in caves. Some live in the ice at the north and south poles; some live where it is very hot. They are found throughout cities and in the country. They grow on other plants and animals. Some are even living on you,on your skin, hair, and inside your body,in your mouth, nose, and all through your body.

These tiny plants and animals are called microbes. The word microbe is made from two other words:micro, meaning small, and bios, meaning life. So,microbe means small life.

Microbes have been on earth for a very long time. They may have been the first forms of life to be alive.Today there are more microbes in the world than all other living things.

People did not know microbes had existed(存在) long. They were too small for them to see.But people did see many changes in their world﹣important changes. And they did not know what caused them. They saw food that they kept too long change color and begin to smell bad. They saw cuts and wounds grow red and painful and become worse. They saw old plants and leaves and trees crumble apart on the forest floor and disappear into the soil.Such changes were a natural part of the world, but people did not understand them. They did not know these changes were evidence(证据) of tiny plants and animals growing all around them.

    1Why couldn't people see microbes?

    A. Because they are too small.

    B. Because they live inside our body.

    C. Because they live far from humans.

    D. Because they may have been the first forms of life to be alive.

2The underlined phrase" crumble apart" in the last paragraph means"     ".

    A. grow taller   B. change into soil

    C. break into tiny pieces   D. become colorful and energetic

3Choose the answer that completes the web below.

    A. Microbes are very small   B. Microbes are all around us

    C. People can't see microbes   D. Food begins to smell bad

  • 26、When I was a baby, I interested you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask: “How could you?”—but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch(腹部抓痒) and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

My housetraining was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long sleeps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Step by step, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human friend. Finally, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was attracted by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. However, as they began to grow, I became their friend.

Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to a flat that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family", but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound(收容所). It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said: “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged(耸肩) and gave you a pained lookThe children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And "How could you?" were the only three words that swept over my mind.

Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream.

My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness(忠诚) from your family than you showed to me.

    【1】Who tells this story?

    A. A dog.     B. A child.

    C. A dog's owner. D. A dog trainer

2Which is true about the dog when it lived at the pound?

    A. It hoped to be kept by another family.

    B. It did not trust humans any more.

    C. It was excited about the pound.

    D. It continued to love its former owner.

3What is the theme of the story?

    A. Be faithful to those who love you.

    B. Never expect too much.

    C. Never complain about your life.

    D. Be ready for changes.

  • 27、It’s big, it’s nasty but it’s more than just a hole in the ground. Some landfills take in 2,000 tons of trash a day but America’s largest landfill takes in that amount each hour, which will be full in two to three years.

Garbage problem has been a long-standing issue. Volunteer students at the University of Arizona in the U.S. started the Garbage Project. They aimed at learning the influence of human’s activities on the environment by studying the garbage.

One important thing the students learned was that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to the students, as well as to many scientists who had predicted that about 70% of the garbage in landfills would break down naturally and quickly. From the landfills, students even found newspapers twenty years ago and forty-year-old hot dogs.

The Garbage Project also discovered that what people say they do was often very different from what they actually did. The volunteer students asked people what they bought, ate and drank, and then they compared this to what people threw away. For some reason, the two didn’t match. For example, the students found much more empty bottles of beer than people said they drank.

Information from the Garbage Project has helped us to see how much garbage we actually put in landfills. The students are hopeful that this will encourage us to find better ways to dispose (处置) of our garbage.

Of course, the best way to dispose of garbage depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular garbage, hazardou materials, or recyclables such as newspaper, glass bottles, and some metals. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Hazardous materials, on the other hand, contain poisonous chemicals or metals. They shouldn’t go into regular landfills. For example, waste batteries can pollute the soil and groundwater, which need to be recycled properly.

It’s necessary to reduce garbage from the source. With the development of living standards, people use too many plastic products only once before throwing them away, especially as online shopping becomes more popular. We can start reducing garbage by using cloth shopping bags and green delivery packages.

Unfortunately, recycling is expensive. It takes time and special treatment. However, in Japan, people recycle garbage so carefully that even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. Positive effects present gradually. In the last five years, the Japanese city of Kamikatsu has raised its rate of recycled waste to 80 percent.

It is a matter of great urgency and we must go into action now. There are many things that ordinary people can do to make less garbage. If everyone does the same, we will make our living environment safer and better.

【1】According to the passage, students of Garbage Project discovered that .

A.people knew what they actually threw away

    B.garbage disappeared as scientists predicted

    C.students collected newspapers for research

D.garbage was too much and lasted longer

【2】The word “hazardous” in Paragraph 6 probably means “ ”.

    A.wet

    B.common

    C.dangerous

    D.burnable

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Disposing the garbage properly will make a difference.

B.Adding more landfills helps solve garbage problems.

C.Improving the living level can reduce the garbage.

D.Shopping online helps to save the environment.
