二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Two years ago, I decided to study at the University of St. Edwards in the city of Austin, Texas. When I was on my research to find the perfect place to study in, I considered many aspects: a safe place, a city where there were companies devoted to marketing or technology, a place where speaking Spanish and English was an advantage and a school where I could learn about digital strategies (数字策略). After comparing and evaluating many cities and universities. I finally decided on Austin.

Since I arrived in Austin, Texas. I had been living inside the university where I had a private room and shared common areas with more students. University life was not very different from the life in Mexico and classes were semblable and the way of socializing too. However, in the United States, the classes were more practical and teachers encouraged you to be self-responsible and complete your tasks.

The classes that I was taking were related to social media, digital marketing and advertising. I was very excited to be able to study technology-related courses.

What I liked most about the experience was being able to live with students from many places, which allowed me to learn from other cultures and to share mine with other students. Also, international student services usually organized events and tours that helped me to get to know the city and the school.

I certainly think that studying abroad is a beneficial experience. It makes us capable of understanding cultural differences and accepting diversity. Personally, I would suggest that you first determine what your goals are by going abroad, research the opportunities and lifestyle, evaluate your universities, and finally decide on the one where you feel more comfortable, connecting with your values and way of seeing life.

  • 27、   Sharks are now at the edge of extinction. Numbers of oceanic sharks have declined by an alarming 71 percent over the past 50 years, according to research published in Nature on Jan 27. “Such steep declines are shocking even to experts, especially when compared to land animal statistics,” Sonja Fordham at Shark Advocates International, a US-based nonprofit, told New Scientist magazine. This alarming data may be an underestimate of reality due to unreported fish catches, Nathan Pacoureau, the study researcher, noted.

The study analyzed 31 species; 24 now risk extinction, and three shark species are now classified as critically endangered, including the oceanic white-tip shark (远洋白鳍鲨) and great hammerhead (锤头鲨). The study found the decline hit the largest species first before impacting smaller ones over time, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It also revealed that shark finning and fishing worldwide have driven the decline. “The Indian Ocean is the worst. There is almost no (fisheries) management at all,” said Pacoureau.

“Overfishing of sharks and rays endangers the health of entire ocean ecosystems as well as food security for some countries,” said Nicholas Dulvy, a professor of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. The researchers are calling on immediate action to secure a brighter future for these “extraordinary, irreplaceable animals”, according to the BBC.

Although the situation looks gloomy, the future of sharks is not doomed (劫数难逃的) yet. Twenty-five species have recovered, due to long-term conservation campaigns in the past decades. A couple of shark species, including the great white, have started to recover through science-based fishing limits, Fordham said. These examples “provide living proof that the world can set, and meet, ambitious biodiversity targets”, Jane Smart, global director of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, said in a statement.

  • 28、Paintings and sculptures can be a feast for the eyes of visitors to art museums, but today their viewing is also an unconventional treatment for people with mental illness.

Last month. a group of Canadian doctors started to write a new kind of prescription (处方), which gives patients free access to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). There, they will have a “relaxing. revitalizing experience” looking at the museum’s collection.

Nathalie Bondil. the museum’s director general. believes that being in contact with culture and arts can help with wellbeing. “In the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century.” she said.

Each prescription will allow not only the patients but also their families or friends to go with them. In the museum. the visitor can appreciate the artworks, and take part in a wide range of activities including drawing, sewing (缝纫) and making a sculpture with recycled materials.

The new treatment is said to be the first of its kind in the world. But there’s increasing evidence that the display of visual art, especially art depicting (描绘) nature, can have positive effects on people with depression, anxiety and self-respect problems.

In 2017, the UK’s All Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing

(APPGAHW) also released a report stating that “the time has come to recognize the powerful contribution the arts can make to our health and wellbeing”.

Is it possible for art to improve overall health? We may not know the answer yet. But one thing is certain, more and more people today are persuaded by the idea that “art is good medicine”.

    A.Get conventional treatment.

    B.Relax by experiencing nature.

    C.Join in some physical activities.

【2】What can the patients do in the museum?

    A.Depict nature.

    B.Recycle sculptures.

    C.Sew clothes.

    D.Watch art workers.

【3】What do we know about the new treatment?

    A.It can relieve depression.

B.Nothing can prove it right so far.

C.It was used before by some visual artists.

  • 29、Imagine stepping into your local supermarket, choosing your necessary things into a basket, heading to the bagging area and walking out with your weekly shopping. There is no need to make a payment, no counting coins, and no placement of a credit card in a terminal. In fact, there is no cashier at all. This is not a theft but a realistic picture of the future way to pay — when technology recognizes your presence, scans your shopping, and invisibly takes payment from your account.

Amer Sajed, the chief executive of Barclaycard, says it will result in the steady dying of the physical plastic credit card, which his company introduced to the UK over 55 years ago. Credit cards have evolved ever since 1966, but the basic procedure of payment has remained the same. A card is either handed over, or the number on it is read out or entered into a machine.

All that requires the existence of a plastic card, but Mr Sajed says this will be replaced by wearable items. At a display for Barclaycard staff, he shows off a plastic ring, a bracelet and a keychain which all contain a chip allowing the shopper to make payments on credit. This, he says, is just a bridge to technology that will recognize customers by their eye or fingerprint, so people will be able to shop without lining up at a checkout.

Although cash, cheques and indeed cards will remain a choice for shoppers, he says, these new ways of paying will take a growing share of the payments market in 10 years’ time. Such a future sounds frightening for anyone who already has concerns about the safety of payment. Mr Sajed argues that nothing will be done without permission.

As this digital market becomes more popular, and the technology advances, there will be a battle among banks, payment providers and others for their product to be used.

【1】What can we infer according to the first paragraph?

    A.Thefts will often happen.

B.There’s on need to make cash.

C.You can do some shopping for free.

    D.Shopping will be more convenient.

【2】Which is right about the physical plastic credit card?

    A.It has already disappeared.

B.It will still exist as a payment way.

C.It was invented by Barclaycard 55 years ago.

D.It has been replaced by the new payment way.

【3】What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?

A.The necessity of a plastic card.

    B.The procedure of doing shopping.

C.The function of the wearable items.

D.The new kind of clothing with a clip.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The future of the credit card.

B.The convenience of the future life.

    C.The more popular shopping market.

D.The development of the payment way.
