二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A British woman who once weighed some 322 pounds said breaking a roller coaster seat during an amusement park outing was her motivation for working toward a healthier weight.

Four years ago, Danielle Wright, 27, went to the Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire, England, with her sister. She wanted to avoid roller coasters, fearing that she was too heavy for them. But she was convinced to give it a try and boarded one of the rides.

"Fitting in the seat was bad enough, but when it came to pulling down the safety bar, my stomach stopped it from working," she recalled. "One of the employees came over and had to put his foot against the ride and push the bar hard to make it click into place."

She was worried throughout the ride that “the bar was going to pop open and I was going to be thrown off the tracks”. When the ride ended, the bar sprang up and made a huge noise. Shortly after, she heard an announcement over the loudspeaker saying the ride was temporarily closed due to a broken seat.

Though it was embarrassing, the incident presented a silver lining. "It's what I needed to motivate me to lose pounds," Danielle said. She totally changed her diet, cutting back on carbohydrate and replacing food like chocolate with healthier choices such as apples and yogurt. Meanwhile, she also began participating in workout classes.

In November 2016, Danielle found out she was pregnant. But as tempted as she was, she didn't allow herself to eat unhealthy food while pregnant and stuck to her new diet.

Now Danielle weighs some 140 pounds. "Being able to run and play with my little boy is, he best part of it all. I couldn't have asked for a better reward," she said.

1Why did Danielle want to avoid roller coasters at first?

A.She was afraid of heights. B.She couldn't afford a ride.

C.She didn't want to lose face. D.She thought she was overweight.

2What happened when Danielle's ride ended?

A.The bar pop opened. B.She was slightly injured.

C.An employee helped her. D.Everything went smoothly.

3What does the underlined part “a silver lining” probably mean?

A.A basic fact. B.Á positive side.

C.A serious problem. D.An unexpected experience.

4Which of the following can best describe Danielle?

    A.Ambitious. B.Sensitive. C.Patient. D.Determined.

  • 27、When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note—"Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery"—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically(魔术般)appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories, I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

【1】Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer to____________.

    A.show his magical power

    B.pay for the delivery

    C.satisfy his curiosity

    D.please his mother

【2】What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house?

A.He wanted to have tea there.

    B.He was a respectable person.

C.He was treated as a family member.

D.He was fully trusted by the family.

【3】Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A.Nobody wants to be a milkman now.

B.It has been driven out of the market.

    C.Its service is getting poor.

D.It is not allowed by law.

【4】Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A.He missed the good old days.

B.He wanted to tell interesting stories.

C.He needed it for his milk bottles.

    D.He planted flowers in it.

  • 28、️ Johannes Gutenberg

Johannes Gutenberg, who was born around the year 1400 in Germany, is widely regarded as the inventor of the modern printing press. Before about 1450, most books were written or copied by hand. This made them extremely time-consuming to produce and expensive to buy. But in 1455 Gutenberg developed a machine which could print multiple copies of the same book. These printed books were sold for 30 florins each, and although this represented three years’ wages for an average office worker at the time, it was still considerably cheaper than a handwritten book. Gutenberg did not achieve financial success as a result of his breakthrough — the rich at that time regarded printed books as inferior and preferred handwritten works — but his invention helped to spread knowledge across Europe and was a major factor in the Renaissance.

    Louis Braille

Born in France in 1809, Louis Braille became blind at the age of three after an accident in his father’s workshop. When he was ten, he earned a place at a special school for blind children in Paris one of the first institutions of its kind in the world. Although this saved Louis from the normal fate of the blind at that time — begging for money on the streets — life at the school was not easy or comfortable. In 1821, Charles Barbiera, former soldier visited the school and talked about a code that he’d invented which allowed soldiers to share information on the battlefield without speaking. The code used dots that could felt with the fingertips. Impressed by this idea, Louis worked on his own code to help the blind read using one of his father’s tools to make the dots — the same kind of tool that had caused him to lose his sight twenty years earlier. The code that Louis invented has become standard throughout the world.

    Samuel Morse

Samuel Morse, born in 1791 in Massachusetts, USA, started his career not as an inventor but as an artist. He had great artistic talent and soon became well known for his portraits, but he also had a passion for new technology. In 1832, while travelling home by sea from Europe, he overheard a conversation about electromagnetism, and this gave him the idea for a new form of communication the electric telegraph. Although other inventors had developed similar machine, Morse’s worked better and he applied for and got the patent in 1837.

    Alexander Graham Bell

A pioneer in the field of telecommunications, Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to Canada and then to the United States settling in Boston, before beginning his career as an inventor. Perhaps because of his mother’s hearing problems, Bell had a particular interest in the education of deaf people. This led him to invent the microphone, and, in1876, his ‘electrical speech machine’ which we now call a telephone. Bell was not the only inventor working in this field, but his lawyer managed to secure the all-important patent which gave Bell ownership of the idea.

Milking robots are becoming popular among dairy(乳品的)farmers in the US.John Fendrick says the robots have changed the life on a dairy farm.

  • 32、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was born in London, England, and lived there with my mother until I was about eight years old. To find a better life, she went to Chicago and left me with friends in London until she got settled enough to send for me.

Meanwhile, back in England, I was getting into trouble. I had always felt like an outsider, different from the other kids. They didn’t want to play with me. That made me mad, so I got into fights and ended up getting expelled (开除) for being a danger to the other kids at my school. The people I was staying with were upset with me and felt they couldn’t manage me. So, they sent me to a home for kids — kind of a boarding school. I felt alone and bored, the food was terrible, and I really missed my mother. Finally, she sent for me.

The weather was different, my school was different, the country was different, but some things were still the same—I was still getting into fights. Kids picked on me about my accent, the color of my skin, my grades or whatever. I was different, still left out. It didn’t matter; I hated getting picked on, and I let them know it — with my fists. All through grades seven and eight, I was sent to the principal’s office so often that he and I became friends. Instead of punishing me, he advised me that I should be better off using the energy I had in more positive ways and encouraged me to play football and basketball after school. He also suggested that I check out boxing — maybe I could learn to use my fists in a meaningful way instead of being on the destructive path I seemed to be headed for.
