26、 Three months after Britain's schools closed to pupils, it's clear that the mass experiment in home education isn't going well. A study by University College London finds that the average child is spending just two and a half hours a day on school work. Only half have their work checked by teachers.
In England, the govermment has promised that when state schools return in September they will have £l billion to spend on tutoring to catch up. But school heads have reacted coolly to the offer.
Tutoring is effective. In 2013 a random study in four schools found that, over the course of a year, tutors raised the reading and writing level of struggling II-year-olds by five months above the progress they would have made without it. In 2018 a larger study of small-group tutoring by university students found that pupils advanced by three months. "There's a reason why parents spend north of E2 billion a year on tutors—it works." says Nick Bent of the Tutor Trust. It doesn't matter who does the tutoring, so long as they meet the pupils in real life. But a programme that employed Indian students to teach maths to British children remotely made no difference to their performance.
Most state schools have set homework but haven't tried to teach online, so have only a vague sense of how much pupils have taken in. They won't know much more even when schools reopen in September. Schools cannot assume that the poorest children need the most catchup work. The UCL study found that children who are entitled to free school meals because of their parents poverty are getting slightly more help at home than others, possibly because their parents don't spend half the day tapping at laptops.
It isn't clear if all children will return to school in September. But plans have been announced before, then abandoned Many parents are confused and fearful. “We don't know how much learning has been lost," says Binks, the executive principal of three primary schools in Norfolk. She is planning for a "recovery term" in the autumn-and probably some delicate conversations with parents about the importance of their children turning up. Shutting schools was much simpler and quicker than restarting them.

27、 Working out can help teenagers boost their grades, a new study suggests. Adolescents who routinely engaged in moderate to vigorous (剧烈的) exercise showed long-term improvements in their academic performance, the British Journal of Sports Medicine study reported.
“Our study suggests that the effect of physical activity may be quite large,” John Reilly, a professor at the University of Strathclyde said. The researchers looked at a sample of about 5000 children who were involved in a long-term study that tracks children born in the U.K. between 1991 and 1992. When children reached 11 years old, their daily physical activity levels were measured using an accelerometer (加速器) for three to seven days. The device, similar to a pedometer (计步器) tracking the number of steps taken, recorded the average time children exercised, which was 29 minutes a day for boys and 18 for girls.
“The actual levels of daily physical activity at age 11 were quite low,” Mr. Reilly noted. The children had their academic performance tested at ages 11 and 13 with compulsory national tests for students, and also at 15 or 16 with the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exam. The tests assessed the children’s abilities in English, math and science subjects. The results showed that the more children participated in moderate to vigorous physical activity, the higher their test scores were at age 11 in all three subjects. For girls, science scores were most strongly linked to exercise.
When children were tested again at age 13, their academic scores were still linked to how much they had exercised when they were 11 years old. By the time the youngsters took the GCSE exam, each 17-minute-per-day increase in physical activity for the boys was linked to an improvement in their scores. Every additional 12-minute increase a day in exercise for the girls was also linked to an increased score, especially in the science category.
The researchers have called for more studies to look at the possible academic benefits that could be derived if students exercised the recommended 60 minutes or more a day.
【1】What’s the study about?
A.The influence of exercise on students’ scores.
B.The secrets of students’ ranking high in class.
C.The causes of students’ participating in sports.
D.The ways of improving students’ physical conditions.
【2】What is the function of the device used in the study?
A.To record how long students exercise.
B.To record the walking speed of students.
C.To record how many steps students walk.
D.To record the number of calories students consume.
【3】What do the study’s results show?
A.Students at age 11 do more exercise than at other ages.
B.Boys at age 13 get more benefits by doing more exercise.
C.Girls’ science scores are more closely related to exercise.
D.More and more students do exercise to improve their scores.

28、Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son’s hope for using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son’s hope after seeing the children’s reaction to the Batmobile.
Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in 50 attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.
Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn’s son for his hope.
“It was great. It was so good to see the kids’ and adults’ excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.
【1】What is Craig Blackburn’s initial purpose of constructing the Batmobile?
A.To realise his son’s dream.
B.To donate it to sick children.
C.To pay his respects to the film Dark Knight.
D.To show off at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba.
【2】How did Blackburn’s friend help him?
A.By making an outer shell for him.
B.By offering him financial support.
C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.
D.By telling him the background of the car factory.
【3】What is the car lovers’ expectation of the Batmobile?
A.It will be put to practical use soon.
B.It can be displayed around the world.
C.It can change the lives of sick children.
D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.
