二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、“You can tune (为……调音) a piano, but you can’t tuna fish.” Upon reading the sentence, you’re either laughing, scratching your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of puns (双关语).

A pun is a form of wordplay that uses similar-sounding words or phrases for comic effect. For example, in the first sentence, the usage of “tuna” is a pun because it sounds like “tune a”. Of course, you can’t “tune a” fish, but it’s a clever way of using words in an unexpected way.

“They can be a demonstration of cleverness,” John Pollack. author of The Pun Also Rises (the title itself a pun based on Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises). “You’re relying on a person’s ability to analyze language, to understand the nuances (细微差别) and complexities of words. Puns show us how subjective meaning and its many layers can be packed into one word. That’s why for most of Western history, puns were a sign of high intellect. They were a tool, and they remain a tool, to pack more meaning into fewer words.”

Puns are used widely throughout popular culture in TV, movies, and campaigns and marketing. For example, the ice cream company Ben and Jerry’s regularly uses puns in their flavors, such as “Americone Dream”. The American animated comedy Bob’s Burgers uses puns in every episode from the title sequence, episode name and Bob’s burgers of the day— like the Poblano Picasso burger (a burger that uses poblano peppers named after the artist, Pablo Picasso) or Eggers Can’t Be Cheesers (an egg burger based on the saying, “Beggars can’t be choosers”).

You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don’t write with a broken pencil because it’s pointless.

【1】Why does the author mention a pun at the beginning of the text?

A.To introduce the origin of puns.

B.To help readers see what a pun is.

C.To show how confusing puns can be.

D.To describe people’s reactions to puns.

【2】What can we conclude from John Pollack’s words?

    A.Puns help us analyze language.

B.Puns are popular with clever people.

C.Puns are usually presented in complex forms.

D.Puns make use of different meanings of words.

    【3】How is paragraph 4 developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By making a classification.

    D.By drawing a conclusion.

【4】In the last paragraph, the author wants to ______.

    A.give a warning

    B.ask for advice

    C.offer suggestions

    D.show comic effect

  • 27、Can you think of three words that are completely unrelated to one another? What about four, five, or even ten? According to an international team of researchers from McGill University, Harvard University and the University of Melbourne, this simple exercise of naming unrelated words and then measuring the semantic distance (语义距离) between them could serve as an objective measure of creativity.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, uses the Divergent (发散的) Association Task(DAT), a four-minute, 10-word test to measure one aspect of creative potential.

The DAT was originally designed by Jay Olson, a recent PhD graduate from McGill’s Department of Psychiatry, inspired by a childhood game involving thinking of unrelated words. He wondered whether a similar task could serve as a simple and elegant way to measure divergent thinking, or the ability to produce various solutions to an open-ended problem.

While studies of creativity and its nature are not new, relatively little is known about the process itself. “Creativity is fundamental to human life,” explains Olson, who is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard. “The more we understand its complexity, the better we can foster (培养) creativity in all its forms.”

The method is an easier and simpler way to test creativity. Using the DAT, the researchers asked participants to name 10 words that were as different from each other as possible. A computational algorithm (计算算法) would then estimate the average semantic distance between the words. The more related the words were, (“cat” and “dog”) the shorter the semantic difference would be, compared to less related words (such as “cat” and “book”).

The team’s first study highlighted the links between semantic distance and two commonly used creativity measures (the Alternative Uses Task and the Bridge-the-Associative Gap Task). This was applied to a later study with 8,500 participants from 98 countries, where the semantic distances changed only slightly by demographic variables (人口统计变数), suggesting that the measure can be used across different populations.

“Our task only measured a small part of one type of creativity,” says Olson. “But these findings enable creativity assessments across larger and more diverse samples with less bias (偏差), which will finally help us better understand this fundamental human ability.”

【1】What do we know about the DTA from the text?

A.It involves thinking about related words.

B.It asks participants to solve open-ended problems.

    C.It can test a person’s divergent thinking.

D.It was created by Jay Olson in his childhood.

【2】What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?

    A.The importance of DTA.

    B.The design process of DTA.

C.How Jay Olson’s study was carried out.

    D.How to measure a person’s creativity.

【3】What conclusion can we draw from Jay Olson’s studies?

A.Semantic distance should be estimated more accurately.

B.Jay Olson’s study could help improve creativity.

C.The DTA method is only for native English speakers.

D.DTA is a reliable method to help study human creativity.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.The Principle of DTA

    B.How to Foster Creativity

    C.The Importance of Creativity

D.A New Way to Measure Creativity

  • 28、Imagine walking through the first Olympic Games in Greece more than 2,500 years ago. Now, the Greek government and Microsoft are working together to make this possible.

On November 10, 2021, they launched an immersive (沉浸式的) tour at Olympia, Greece, where the first Olympic Games were held. The new program at ancient Olympia uses augmented (增大的;扩大的) reality technology, which overlays computer-generated images on top of what users see in the real world.

Users can tour the site remotely or in person with an online presentation and a mobile app. The app uses a type of augmented reality technology. It allows the users to see virtual recreations of temples and competition areas as they walk through the ruins.

Seventh and eighth graders from a local school toured the site where ancient athletes competed in running, javelin throwing, wrestling, boxing, horse racing and other events. The students were able to flip (快速翻转) through inside and outside views. “The app is really impressive. I think it can help with teaching in schools,” said one of the students.

Microsoft is also experimenting with similar technology at the Olympic Museum in Athens, Greece. There, visitors can use Microsoft’s mixed-reality HoloLens headsets. These join visual information on top of what the viewer indeed sees. For example, if the wearer looks up, the headset can help them see a towering statue of Zeus. Or they can take a look at the workshop used by the famed sculptor Phidias more than 2,400 years ago.

Tech companies are racing to deliver mixed reality platforms and devices that combine the Internet with everyday experiences. This technology is part of what’s being called the metaverse (虚拟现实世界), which is an innovative online world aimed at combining real and virtual life. Today, few people use augmented reality tools like Microsoft’s HoloLens headset. However, experts say they could become more normal soon.

Rose, one of the experts, said that augmented reality may further separate people in society, with each user in their own realities. But she remains hopeful, saying that augmented reality could be used as a powerful education tool. It could also help people develop new skills. “There are so many forces of potential here that I think it’s mostly exciting,” she said.

【1】With the help of Microsoft’s app, users can ________.

A.see the ancient world of Olympia

    B.build the temples in Olympia

C.turn the ruins into real competition areas

    D.organize a virtual Olympic Games

【2】Why did the author mention the students from a local school in paragraph 4?

    A.To advertise the app.

B.To sell the app to local schools.

    C.To highlight the app’s popularity.

    D.To stress the app’s effectiveness.

【3】How does Rose find the technology of the metaverse?

    A.It will make people lovely.

    B.It has a promising future.

C.It will make people more powerful.

D.It helps people live out their dreams.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Visitors Use Apps to Experience a Virtual Tour in Olympia

B.Olympia Uses Augmented Reality Technology to Rebuild its Honor

C.The Augmented Reality Project Brings the Birthplace of the Olympics to Life

D.The Technology of the Metaverse is Used in the Olympic Games

  • 29、   Millions of people die of hunger in southern Africa every year, but when Zambia was offered thousands of tons of free maize by the US, the government politely paid no.

“We don’t know whether the food is safe,” said Zambia’s commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Dipak Patel.

His worries are shared by countries around the world that are in two minds about America’s genetically modifiedGM,转基因的)crops. Just last week, EU(欧盟)member nations were discussing whether or not to import GM sweet corn from the US.

Ever since people started farming, they have tried to crossbreed(杂交) plants to make them stronger or better tasting. At one time, only related plants could be crossed with each other.

But when GM techniques were developed in the 1970s, scientists were able to put a single gene from a living creature into an unrelated creature.

This means they can make crops more productive and resistant to disease by adding genes from other species. They can also create food with special characteristics, such as “golden rice”, which is enriched with vitamin A. But many people believe GM foods are a health risk.

“If left to me, I would certainly not eat GM foods,” said Scottish scientist Arpad Pusztai. “We are putting new things into food which haven’t been eaten before. The effects on the immune system(免疫系统) are not easy to predict.”

At the moment, the official argument is that GM foods “are not likely to present risks for human health”. But there are still many questions to be answered as the foods are produced in different ways.

Some experts believe the genetic material added to plants can transfer to humans and give damage to our bodies. Further harm could be caused by the genes from GM plants crossbreeding with naturally produced crops.

1We learn from the passage .

A.people have discovered that GM foods will do harm to human health

B.millions of Zambia people die of eating too much GM foods

C.people are still not sure if GM foods will do harm to human health

D.genetic material added to plants will damage our bodies sooner or later

2What does “in two minds” in the third paragraph mean?

    A.Unsure B.Worried

    C.Likely D.Careless

3The following statements is NOT true about GM foods?

A.It is produced from plants added genes from other species.

B.GM foods can have special characteristics.

C.GM foods will affect people’s immune system.

D.GM foods have been produced since 1970s.

    4What’s the author’s attitude?

    A.Supportive. B.Neutral.

    C.Doubtful. D.Critical.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Brett Bacon, along with his wife Lindsay and their newborn child, was out boating on the lake near their house in Lake Windermere in British Columbia when he saw something strange in the water.

At first Bacon just thought it was a carpet (地毯) in the water. As soon as he realized it was a bird and saw its wide wings and even its head popping up, he knew what it was.

It was a giant eagle. Eagles can actually get waterlogged (浸水的) as compared to other large birds that can go in the water and get out. It’s not strange to see eagles go into the water to catch fish and then pop back up, but this thing was wet through and struggling to stay above the water. It was trying to swim and trying to fly away, but it just couldn’t get out of the water at all. The large bird’s only chance to get out itself was by swimming but it was about a kilometer to shore (岸边) in any direction.

Seeing the state of the bird, Bacon knew he needed to do something to help it out. Lindsay started recording and caught what happened next on video, while their son lay on a seat across from Bacon.

Bacon brought the boat close to the eagle. It took a few tries. But after about fifteen minutes, Bacon was actually able to take hold of the bird and bring it into the boat. “People must have just thought I had a dog on my lap, but from my bottom to my head, he was the same height as me,” said Bacon.

As soon as the bird was in the boat, it immediately took off and dropped into the water again.
