Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have friend to talk with and do things with. Of course, we need to be alone sometimes. We don’t always need people around. But we will feel lonely if we never have a friend.

No two people are just the same. Sometimes we get on badly with our friends. 1.But it doesn’t mean that we don’t like each other anymore.

Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. If we miss them, we can call them or write to them. Maybe we can never see them again. However, we can make new friends. When we get to know them, 2.it is surprising to realize how much we like the new friends.

People sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women. 3. Some libraries are named in this way, and so are some schools. 4.这些地方使我们想起了这些人。 There’s good news for people who have many friends. They live longer than people who don’t. Why? • 24、All over the world, thousands of animals are used for wildlife tourism. People travel to watch monkey shows, hug baby tigers and swim with dolphins. It might look like fun, but there are reports that animals are hurt now and again. The World Animal Protection (WAP) says that up to 550,000 wild animals are exposed (暴露) to ill treatment around the world. In Cambodia, for example, it’s been reported that elephants have died after carrying tourists for long in hot weather. This is getting attention—over 100 travel companies have promised that they will no longer open up such places. However, some people argue that animal tourism isn’t always as bad as it seems. So what do you think?

    Group Yes

◇Animals weren’t put on this planet for enjoyment. They should be free to live as they choose.

◇The way animals are treated is often cruel (残忍的) and causes much pain. Even if treated well, they cannot act in the same way as they would in the wild.

◇We don’t need wildlife tourism. We can see animals close up in their natural home in TV programs. There’s no need to disturb (打扰) them in real life.

    Group No

◇It is enjoyable and educational for people to communicate with the wonderful animals. The more people know about them, the more they want to protect them.

◇Wildlife tourism brings money to poor areas and may be the only way for some people to make a living.

◇Not all animals are treated badly. Some endangered animals are under the protection of programs that look after rare species (稀有物种).

【1】How many wild animals are facing bad treatment according to WAP?

    A.More than 100.

    B.Hundreds.

    C.Thousands.

    D.in poor areas

【5】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Ways of protecting rare species.

    B.Different opinions on wildlife tourism.

    C.How to bring tourists enjoyment.

D.Whether to collect information on wildlife.

  • 25、   More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools(工具) as iPads are used in a lot of courses(学科), including language, history and science.

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a conversation only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same conversation again and again to understand it.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn, such as listening to stories and watching movies. The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can concentrate on the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored(分类) in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now.

Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are bad for students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate(分隔) students from each other.

However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.

1In the second paragraph, the underlined phrase “at their own pace” probably means ________.

A.according to their own B.without their teachers’ help

C.about whatever they like D.in their parents’ hope

  • 26、In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.

Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then figure out the machine’s shape at any moment.

The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.

“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

【1】Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged?

    A. They cannot repair themselves.

    B. The computer has changed a lot.

    C. They have no computers inside.

    D. The computer cannot work if the robot changes.

【2】The new technology allows the robot to _________.

    A. do house work for humans

    B. keep working after being damaged

    C. remember a lot of information

    D. tell people where it is

【3】The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

    A. sensors B. robots

    C. arms and legs D. scientists

【4】How do the sensors in the robot work?

    A. They can replace the computer when it’s broken.

    B. They can find out where the damage comes from.

    C. They help the computer learn the robot’s condition.

    D. They can send signals to the person who uses the robot.

    【5】The passage is probably from_____________.

    A. a newspaper   B. an advertisement

    C. a tour guide D. an application

  • 27、I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.

For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than the other girls, so I often bent(弯曲)my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn’t looking forward to entering the ninth grade.

My grandfather didn’t laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me, “Stand straight and tall, Alisa.” I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.

My grandfather grew up in war-torn(受战争严重破坏的)Europe. “Stand straight, and stand tall” meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life. “If they could do it, why couldn’t I? Stand straight, and stand tall,” he often reminded himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was trying to learn not only this hard new job but also a new language.

“Stand straight, and stand tall,” he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather’s unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.

“Stand straight, and stand tall” has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture(身姿), it also tells me to be proud of who I am.
