二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、To Be a Deaf DJ

I was born in England with perfect hearing. In 1990, when I was five, my family moved to the United States. I started getting ear infections every three months or so. We didn’t have health insurance at the time, and when I got a third infection, my parents couldn’t afford the treatment. I went deaf in my right ear and was left with 50 percent hearing in my left. Over time, my remaining hearing dropped to 20 percent, where it is today. My doctors predicted that I would be thoroughly deaf by now, and I think I’m doing pretty well.

There was always music on in my house in my childhood. I loved listening to Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson. My dad was a DJ, so he played disco, folk, rock, and music from other countries. For my 18th birthday, my dad asked me to deejay at the restaurant. After doing that for a few weeks, I was interested in it. I desired to learn more. I e-mailed DJ Shiftee, a distinguished New York City DJ, “I know you like a challenge. How about teaching a deaf person to deejay?” He wrote back the next day, “Challenge accepted.” He tutored me twice a week for two years, helping me develop correct technique. I practiced four hours a day.

Now when I’m performing, muscle memory takes over. When I started, I wouldn’t tell the club managers that I was deaf. I would just show up, introduce myself, and start playing music. At the end of the night, someone would say, “Oh, here’s the check.” And I’d say, “What? Oh, I can’t hear.” They were always so astonished. Sometimes I would bring doctor’s notes because they wouldn’t believe me. It was reassurance that they were giving me opportunities to perform because I was brilliant, not out of sympathy. Eventually people started calling me “that deaf DJ,” and the name stuck.

What fascinates me about deejaying is the creativity. I use software that turns the music into lines of color on a computer screen. I’m visually hearing the music. The next time you go dancing, cover your ears, and you’ll start seeing that you’re able to hear the music in a different way. Music is not all about hearing. I pay all sorts of get-togethers now, from college parties to corporate events. I also go to elementary schools for the deaf and talk to the students about motivation and believing in themselves. I tell the parents, “My advice to you is let your kids chase their dreams. I’m a deaf DJ, so why not?”

  • 27、   Marie, an 85-year-old woman who had been bedridden (卧床不起的) for 10 years, was granted her biggest wish to look at the sea again with help from East Coast Radio and Netcare 911.

About 10 years ago, Marie had an unsuccessful back operation which left her bedridden. She then had to stay in an old age home and needed constant care. “The only time she could go outside was when she was taken to hospital over the years,” said Lucy, Marie’s daughter.

Lucy wrote an e-mail to East Coast Radio in April asking them to help her take her mother to the beach because it was her biggest wish. She told them that her mother just wanted to go and look at the sea and go back again to the home, that’s all. East Coast Radio did an interview with the family and agreed to make her wish come true.

Two weeks later, a team of Netcare 911 paramedics (医护人员) fetched Marie from the old age home and took her in a stretcher to Amanzimtoti Beach. One of the paramedics found a bucket and collected some sea water for her to put her hands in. She also got a chance to touch the sand.

Marie said, “Thanks to these kind people, I could get to the beach again, which may be the last time for me.”

A.Because of her old age. B.Because of a failed operation.

C.Because of a traffic accident. D.Because of little medical care.

2Who took Marie to see the sea?

A.Her family. B.People from Amanzimtoti Beach.

3How did Marie probably feel when saying the words in the last paragraph?

    A.Hopeful. B.Embarrassed.

    C.Thankful. D.Disappointed.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.An old woman became bedridden because of bad luck.

B.Kind people helped a bedridden woman realize her wish.

C.East Coast Radio and Netcare 911 always help poor people.

D.Amanzimtoti Beach is a beautiful place people wish to visit.

  • 28、   Yet although officers will not disappear, it’s hard to imagine that working life will return to before-COVID-19 (新冠肺炎) ways. For more than a century workers have pushed themselves on-to crowded trains and buses, or suffered traffic jams, to get into the office, and back, five days a week. However, for the past one year they have not had to commute (上下班往返), and may enjoy it for a long time.

Employers, for their part, have supported expensive offices in city centers because they need to gather workers in one place. The rent is only part of the cost; there are cleaning, lightning, printers, catering and security on top. Needless to say, in the homeworking era these costs are cut down.

Another part of the homeworking era may be the disappearance of the five-day working week. Even before the COVID-19 many workers became used to taking phone calls or answering emails at the weekend. In the homeworking era, the dividing line between home and working life, a useful way of relieving stress, will be even harder to keep. It may be lost altogether.

What’s more, without the Monday-to-Friday commute, the weekend seems more nebulous, for employees may walk and take breaks freely, with only the company video calls unchanged.

Looking further out, the homeworking era may bring other changes. Some may decide to live in small towns where housing costs are lower, since they have no need to commute. Men will have fewer excuses to skip cleaning or childcare if they are not disappearing to the office.

In a sense, this is a return to normal: until the 19th century most people worked at or close to their homes. But social historians may still regard 2020 as the start of a new age.

【1】Which one is the change of the working life after the COVID-19?

    A.Living in big cities.

    B.More traffic jams.

    C.Reduced working cost.

D.Less phone calls at the weekend.

【2】What does the underlined word “nebulous” mean in the 4th paragraph?

    A.Important.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Fruitful.

    D.Annoying.

【3】Which word can best describe the writer’s attitude in the last paragraph?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Objective.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Negative.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.2020: the Start of a New Age?

B.Working at Home: Are You Ready?

C.Who is the Winner: Employer or Employee?

D.Home and Working Life: How to Keep Balanced?

  • 29、   Andrew Ritchie, inventor of the Brompton folding bicycle, once said that perfect portable bike would be “like a magic carpet... You could fold it up and put it into your pocket or handbag". Then he paused: “But you'll always be limited by the size of the wheels. And so far no one has invented a folding wheel."

It was a rare --- indeed unique --- occasion when I was able to put Ritchie right. A 19th-century inventor, William Henry James Grout, did in fact design a folding wheel. His bike, predictably named the Grout Portable, had a frame that was divided into two and a larger wheel that could be separated into four pieces. All the bits fitted into Grout's Wonderful Bag, a leather case.

Grout's aim: to solve the problems of carrying a bike on a train. Now doesn't that sound familiar? Grout intended to find a way of making a bike small enough for train travel: his bike was a huge beast. And importantly, the design of early bicycles gave him an advantage: in Grout's day, tyres were solid, which made the business of dividing a wheel into four separate parts relatively simple. You couldn't do the same with a wheel fitted with a one-piece inflated(充气的) tyre.

So, in a 21st-century environment, is the idea of the folding wheel dead? It is not. A British design engineer, Duncan Fitzsimons , has developed a wheel that can be folded into something like a slender ellipse(椭圆). From beginning to end, the tyre remains inflated.

Will the young Fitzsimons's folding wheel make it into production? I have no idea. But his inventiveness shows two things. First, people have been saying for more than a century that bike design has reached its limit, except for gradual advances. It’s as silly a concept now as it was 100 years ago: there's plenty still to go for. Second, it is in the field of folding bikes that we are seeing the most interesting inventions. You can buy a folding bike for less than £1,000 that can be knocked down so small that can be carried on a plane ——minus wheels, of course ——as hand baggage.

Folding wheels would make all manner of things possible. Have we yet got the magic carpet of Andrew Ritchie's imagination? No. But it's progress.

1We can infer form Paragraph 1 that the Brompton folding bike____.

    A.was portable

    B.had a folding wheel.

C.could be put in a pocket.

    D.looked like a magic carpet

2We can learn from the text that the wheels of the Grout Portable_______.

    A.were difficult to separate.

B.could be divided into 6 pieces.

    C.were fitted with solid tyres.

D.were hard to carry on a train.

3We can learn from the text that Fitzsimons's invention_______.

A.kept the tyres as whole piece.

    B.was made into production soon.

    C.left little room for improvement.

D.changed our views on bag design
