Art, as we know, is subjective. What one person considers a priceless masterpiece others might see as nothing more than a giant black square. But there’s one very specific kind of painting that almost everyone sees the same way — the kind with the “strange” eyes that seem to follow you around the room. So what causes this optical illusion (视觉错觉) and how do artists achieve this effect?
It turns out, for even a moderately skilled artist, this effect isn’t a difficult thing to achieve. In fact, the artists need to use a little illusion of depth, making the person depicted on the canvas appears somewhat 3D on a 2D canvas, and to adjust the gaze (凝视) of the eyes so that they would be looking at someone standing right in front of the picture.
So what exactly is going on here in our brains that then makes it seem like the eyes follow you even if you move away from being front and center? As demonstrated by a team of researchers from Ohio State University, as you move to the side, the “near” and “far” points of the 2D image don’t really change. These near and far points are defined as visible points that, if the image was 3D, would appear nearest and furthest away from the viewer at a given angle.
The idea is simple. No matter what angle you look at a painting from, the painting itself doesn’t change. You’re looking at a flat surface. The key is that the near points and far points of the picture remained the same no matter the angle the picture was viewed from. When observing real surfaces in the natural environment, the near and far points vary when we change viewing direction. When we observe a picture on the wall, the visual information that defines near and far points is unaffected by viewing direction. Still, we willingly accept and interpret the thing in the painting as if it were a real object.
Thus, because the perspective, shadows, and light on the painting don’t change as you move around, if the eyes in the painting would be staring directly at the observer who is standing in front of the painting, it creates something of an optical illusion in your brain so that the eyes will continue to seem to stare at you as you move to the side.
In contrast to the eyes following you trick, if the artist tweaks the painting a bit, for example the artist adjusts the gaze of the eyes so that the eyes are looking off somewhere else instead of directly looking at a potential observer, no matter where you stand, the eyes will never seem to be looking at you.
The technique first began popularly showing up in art around the 14th century when the artist and architect Fillipo Brunelleshi introduced the art world to the idea of “linear perspective”, being painting with the idea of everything in the picture converging (聚集) on a specific point on the horizon, creating the illusion of depth. Linear perspective, combined with skilled use of light and shadow allows artists to create masterfully realistic paintings, including sometimes of people that stare at you creepily no matter where you stand.

It usually takes about 15 or 20 minutes to fall asleep, with the most comfortable position. Some people sleep on their backs and some on their stomachs. Most people curl up in a "fetal position" like a baby in the womb(子宫). Other people like strange positions like sleeping on elbows(肘部) and knees.

You're about to sleep when suddenly you feel like falling. You even dream you are falling off a cliff. Your body jerks(抽搐). What's happening? Well, you are falling-asleep. Your body relaxes, but your brain is still active and when your muscles become less tense, your brain senses that you are in danger of falling. To save you, your brain sends a signal.
10:00 pm Did You Hear That?
Soon a loud sound breaks the peace. What? You are snoring. When this happens, you breathe through your mouth, and as you take in air, it makes the soft tissue(组织) at the back of your throat vibrate(振动). The good news is that snoring is not usually a serious problem, unless of course, you wake up your little brother or sister.

Sleepwalkers keep their eyes open and seems to see where they are going, but they are sound asleep. This behavior is a common among children, whose brains and bodies are still learning to work together.
4:00 am Dare to Dream
Nightmares(噩梦) or sweet dreams usually occur in the last hours of sleep. If you awaken in the middle of a dream, you might find it difficult to move for a moment or two. Certain parts of your brain have shut down, preventing messages from going to the muscles, temporarily(暂时地) disabling the body.
7:00 am But My Arm Is Still Asleep
Time to wake up, as you begin to move, a strange feeling floods down from your shoulder. Oh no, pins and needles! When pressure on your arm keeps the nerves(神经)from sending any messages to the brain, your arm loses all feelings. Don't worry if you wake up and your arm is still asleep. It'll be wide awake soon.

27、 Many people who are looking to get a pet dog get a puppy. There are many reasons why they get puppies. After all, puppies are cute, friendly, and playful. But even though puppies make good pets, there are good reasons why you should consider getting an adult dog instead.
When you get a puppy, you have to teach it how to behave. You have to make sure that the puppy is house-trained so that it does not go to the bathroom inside the house. You have to teach the puppy not to jump up on your guests or chew on your shoes. You have to train the puppy to walk on a leash (皮带). This is a lot of work.
Many adult dogs have already been house- trained. Many adult dogs will not jump on or chew things that you do not want them to jump on or chew. Many adult dogs will be able to walk on a leash without pulling you to the other side of the street, most adult dogs will wait for you to play. What is more, they will sleep when you are sleeping and are happy to watch television on the couch right beside you.
Puppies also have a lot of energy and want to play all of the time. This can be fun, but you might not want to play as much as your puppy does. Puppies will not always sleep through the night or let you relax as you watch television.
There is one last reason why you should get an adult dog instead of a puppy. When most people go to the pound (收容所) to get a dog, they get a puppy. This means that many adult dogs spend a lot of time in the pound, and some never find good homes. So if you are looking to get a dog for a pet, you should think about getting an adult dog.
