26、China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

27、A little boy invited his mother to attend his school’s first parent meeting. To the little boy’s disappointment, she said she would go. This would be the first time that his classmates and teacher met his mother and he felt embarrassed because of her face. Although she was a beautiful woman, there was a serious scar (疤) that covered nearly the entire right side of her face. The boy never wanted to talk about why or how she got the scar.
At the meeting, the people were impressed by the kindness and natural beauty of his mother although she had the scar, but the little boy still hid himself from everyone. However, he changed his mind when hearing of a conversation between his mother and his teacher.
The teacher asked carefully, “How did you get the scar on your face?”
The mother replied, “When my son was a baby, he was in a room that caught fire. Everyone was too afraid to go in because the fire was out of control, so I went in. As I was running toward his bed, I saw a long piece of wood coming down and I put myself over him trying to protect him. I was knocked down, but fortunately, a fireman came in and saved both of us.” She touched the burned side of her face. “It will be lasting, but to this day, I have never regretted what I did.”
At this point, the little boy came out running toward his mother with tears in his eyes. He held her in his arms and felt great love from his mother. He held her hand tightly for the rest of the day.

28、How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. 【1】 It can seem daunting, but this ‘maths anxiety’ is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability. 【2】 Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected.
The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC she believes giving students, particularly girls, good role models “is critical, especially at a young age”. 【3】
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths arouses so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s a right or wrong answer — there’s no room for bluffing (吓唬) — might make you more worried about underperforming. 【4】 Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Ideally, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
A.The problem really starts in childhood, at school.
B.She thinks the key is to get people, especially women, who love teaching maths to children.
C.Since math is a subject of fixed answers, children are often scared of giving the wrong answer.
D.And once we assume we’re not a ‘maths person’, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
E.More often than not, children aren’t aware of how they can practice basic math outside of school and homework.
F.But many dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel a sense of worry and confusion.
29、Growing up in rural Malawi, Africa, William Kamkwamba learned to accept that life was hard. He lived with his parents and seven sisters in a small clay house without electricity or running water. Like most boys in his village, William was expected to assist his parents on the family farm, as well as keep up with his school work. Each night, like most Malawians, his family went to bed early because the kerosene oil they needed to light the lamps was costly.
When he was 10, a terrible drought left many Malawians hungry and William’s family was no exception. At the age of 13, William and many other children were forced to drop out of school when their parents could no longer afford his schooling. William had to work even harder to help his family, but he wasn’t ready to give up his education. He went to the local library and took out some books to study. One book, called Using Energy, sparked William’s interest in science and gave him an idea that significantly changed his future.
In the book, William found a picture of a windmill, and a brief description of how it could be used to generate electricity from wind. He knew that there was plenty of wind in his village, and realized that if he could build a windmill like that, he could give his family and the people in his village a much better life. There was just one problem. The book didn’t explain how to build a windmill, and neither did any of the other books in the library.
What happened over the next year demonstrated William’s incredible ambition and determination. He began to collect any kinds of materials he thought could be useful—scraps of wood, broken bicycles, old shoes—and started to build a windmill next to his family’s house. He endured many challenges and failures. Other people in his village called him crazy and said his idea would never work. Finally, at the age of 14, William completed his first windmill. When they saw electric lights and heard the sound of music on the radio coming from William’s house, the village people came running. He had done it. William Kamkwamba had found a way to capture the wind.
Kamkwamba’s autobiography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, tells the story of how the rest of the world came to know about his achievements. With the help of international supporters, his village now has clean running water, solar powered lighting, and electric power. As a result of his actions, Kamkwamba was invited to study engineering at Dartmouth College, one of the top-ranking universities in the U. S. He also travels the world and gives talks about how he made his dream a reality.

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My first semester at MIT (Massuchusetts Institute of Technology麻省理工大学) was awesome — I was very motivated and got all A’s, with everything being pass. My second semester went pretty well, too, but I struggled very much in organic chemistry and ended up with a B. This was my first B ever, and though I was disappointed, I shook it off and tried to stay positive.
I was not even sure why I took organic chemistry, since I was interested in math. My parents were pressuring me to become a doctor like them so I guess I was trying to make them satisfied. But at the same time, I was desperately running away from them and their control. I was confused and had no idea what I wanted to do in the future.
For my third semester, I took Linear Algebra (线性代数). I had never done higher-level math before, and I ended up with a D. I didn’t do that well in my other classes, either. I started skipping classes more and more, sleeping more and more. It seemed like all my friends were doing so well, getting some internship opportunities over the summers, while my parents made me fly home and stay with them every summer. The next semester I got 2 Fails.
