  • 26、Desk toys are simple toys made for office workers. They make wonderful presents for those who spend lots of time on the job and need a break from a stressful working environment. 【1】 So they can be easily available in toy stores and gift stores, as well as many websites.

【2】 Cheap and unfashionable items like Barrels of Monkeys, Mr. Potato Head dolls, or Rubik’s Cubes which kids like are often given as desk toys. These toys can give you a sense of familiarity and nostalgia (怀旧) and can help reduce stress.

One consistently popular office toy is the Zen garden. 【3】 Usually the set includes polished stones or small towers, as well as tools that are used to brush the sand into patterns. Many people find this a relaxing experience and enjoy rearranging the setting in pleasing ways.

Allowing workers to have fun items such as desk toys will make them feel more comfortable, more appreciated, and more at home in their office. In large corporations, it can also show potential customers or clients that the organization is made up of individuals rather than being faceless. However, too many displays can damage a healthy and serious working environment. 【4】

Finding desk toys for a hard worker can be fun, and the large selection allows for many tastes. Not all desk toys are childish in nature. 【5】

Choose desk toys to match the personality of the owners, but take care to consider their working environments and whether the toys are appropriate.

A.Those toys are usually inexpensive and popular.

B.Anyone who works in an office needs a desk toy.

  • 27、While many of us may have been away somewhere nice last summer, few would say that we’ve “summered.” “Summer” is clearly a noun, more precisely, a noun that can be used as a verb.

Way back in our childhood, we all learned the difference between a noun and a verb. With such a tidy definition, it was easy to spot the difference. Not so in adulthood, where we are expected to “foot” bills, “chair” committees. Chances are you didn’t feel uncomfortable about the sight of those verbed nouns.

“The verbing of nouns is as old as the English language,” says Patricia O’Conner, a former editor at The New York Times Book Review. Experts estimate that 20 percent of all English verbs were originally (最初的) nouns. And the phenomenon seems to be snowballing. Since 1900, about 40 percent of all new verbs have come from nouns.

Even though conversion(转化) is quite universal (普遍的), plenty of grammarians are opposed to the practice. The grammar experts William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White say: “Many nouns lately have been pressed into service as verbs. Not all are bad, but all are questionable.” The Chicago Manual of Style takes a similar view, advising writers to use verbs with great care.

“Sometimes people oppose a new verb because they would not like to accept what is unfamiliar to them,” says O’Conner. That’s why we’re comfortable “hosting” a party, but we might feel upset by the thought of “medaling” in sports. So are there any rules verbing? Benjamin Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, doesn’t offer a rule, but suggests that people think twice about verbing a noun if it’s easily replaceable by an already existing popular verb. Make sure it’s descriptive but not silly-sounding, he says.

In the end, however, style is subjective (主观的). Easy conversion of nouns to verbs has been part of English grammar for centuries; it is one of the processes that make English “English.” Not every newly created word passes into general use, but as for trying to end the verbing of nouns altogether, forget it.

【1】What can we learn about the verbing of nouns?

A.It hasn’t recently been opposed by many grammarians.

B.It is more commonly accepted by children than adults.

C.It hasn’t been a rare phenomenon in the past century.

D.It is easily replaced by existing verbs in practice.

【2】What is most leading experts’ attitude towards the practice of the verbing of nouns?

    A.Cautious (谨慎的).

    B.Satisfied.

    C.Disappointed.

    D.Unconcerned.

【3】What does the author think of ending the verbing of nouns?

    A.Predictable.

    B.Practicable.

    C.Approaching.

    D.Impossible.

  • 28、It’s one thing to be a good team player, but it’s another to be a good captain (队长). Few will have the opportunity to take such an important leadership role. 【1】, you need to know how to lead by example.

Give a full effort all the time. 【2】. Because you are the captain, your teammates will look up to you and follow your lead whether you want them to or not. No matter the situation, your teammates need to see you working as hard as you can to win the game; you are also the main person who will either be praised or criticized for the team’s performance.

Show good sportsmanship. On the field, you should treat your opponents (对手) with respect. 【3】, be sure to shake their hands as well. No matter what the game is like, congratulate them on a good contest. Let your teammates know it is important to respect everyone playing.

【4】 In many sports, captains are the only players allowed to talk to the referees (裁判). Don’t shout at the referees over calls you think they missed or got wrong. Remember that the referee is in charge on the field and that you can’t let their calls affect your teammates’ play on the field.

Take responsibility for your mistakes. Let your teammates know it is important to own up to your errors. 【5】. If proper, apologize. Stand up and say, “I made a mistake there. Sorry, everyone. If you are not willing to accept responsibility, your teammates won’t have any reason to do the same.

    A.After the game is over.

    B.Treat referees with respect.

    C.Communicate with the referees.

E.Don’t make excuses when things go wrong.

  • 29、   In his 402nd anniversary year, Shakespeare is still rightly celebrated as a great language master and writer. But he was not the only great master of play writing to die in 1616, and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting influence on theater.

While less known worldwide, Tang Xianzu is considered one of Chinas greatest playwrights and is highly spoken of in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.

Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi province. Unlike Shakespeare's large body of plays, poems and sonnets (十四行诗), Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin, Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), A Dream under the Southern bough, and Dream of Handan. The latter three were constructed around a dream narrative, a way through which Tang unlocked the emotional dimension of human desires and ambitions and explored human nature beyond the social and political limits of that time.

Similar to Shakespeare, Tang's success rode the wave of a renaissance (复兴) in theater as an artistic practice. As in Shakespeare's England, Tang's works became hugely popular in China too. During Tang's China, his plays were enjoyed performed, and changed. Kunqu Opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southern China to the whole nation and became a symbol of Chinese culture. Combining northern tune and southern music, kunqu Opera was known for its poetic language, music, dance movements and gestures. Tang's works benefited greatly from the popularity of kunqu Opera, and his plays are considered classics of kunqu Opera.

While Tang and Shakespeare lived in a world away from each other, there are many things they share in common, such e humanity of their drama, their heroic figures, their love for poetic language, a lasting popularity and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.

【1】Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the first paragraph?

    A.To describe Shakespeare's anniversary.

B.To introduce the existence of Tang Xianzu.

C.To explain the importance of Shakespeare.

D.To suggest the less popularity of Tang Xianzu.

【2】What's possibly one of the main theme of Tang's works?

    A.Social reality.

    B.Female dreams.

    C.Human emotions.

    D.Political environment.

【3】What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 4?

A.The influence of Kunqu Opera on Tang's works.

B.Tang's success in copying Shakespeare's styles.

C.The way Kunqu Opera became a symbol of Chinese culture.

D.Tang's popularity for his poetic language and music.
