  • 27、When Nicole Thompson teaches a math word problem to her fourth-grade class in Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), she has the class read it over three times. After the first read, students discuss what the situation described in the word problem is. The second time, they discuss what numbers they see and what those numbers mean. The third time, they talk about the question and what they need to solve. Thompson said the method really helps her students, especially those for whom English is a second language.

Thompson learned this method during a series of training courses on improving math instruction for multilingual (说多种语言的) learners, a term that refers to all students who speak a language other than English at home. The training was organized by The New Teacher Project (TNTP). “We wanted to show teachers that all students, including multilingual learners, could deal with grade-level learning tasks with the right support,” said Jeanine Harvey, director of multilingual learner academics at TNTP.

In addition to teaching methods for supporting more student discussion in the classroom, TNTP staff worked with teachers to analyze word problems from their area’s math courses and identify what vocabulary students would need to know in order to tackle the problems.

According to surveys made by TNTP, the training program improved teachers confidence. Before the training, only 40% of teachers in PVUSD said they felt confident about supporting English learners in their classrooms. Afterward, more than 75% felt confident. Many teachers also said the training helped them see that their students were capable (有能力的) of hard work.

“Sometimes we forget that students are more capable than we see. The training kind of opened my eyes to that,” said Juan Gonzalez, who teaches the fifth grade. He said he enjoys seeing his students having conversations about math and using more difficult vocabulary. “They love being challenged. We have to let go of their hand and let them struggle a bit.”

【1】What’s the purpose of Thompson’s method of teaching students a math problem?

    A.To develop their writing skills.

    B.To deepen their understanding.

    C.To test their pronunciation.

D.To add fun to boring lessons.

【2】What was the training received by Thompson intended to do?

A.Help math teachers teach multilingual students properly.

B.Advise teachers to care about students’ personal growth.

C.Support math teachers with high- tech teaching aids.

D.Improve students’ math scores through group work.

【3】What does the underlined word “tackle” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Search for.

    B.Work out.

    C.Avoid.

    D.Raise.

【4】What’ s the main idea of Gonzalez’s words in the last paragraph?

A.TNTP has changed many students’ daily life.

B.Teachers need to be patient with their students.

C.A wide vocabulary is the key to language learning.

D.Students should be inspired to use their abilities.

  • 28、Life affects (影响) friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs, old friendships fall away and new ones come. As long as we live, the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected.

When we were children, we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do, and as we got older, memories are lost, faces get changed, and even friends’ names from childhood are forgotten.

Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can’t control others. If someone wants to be your friend, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave.

You can talk to old timers and they will tell you that life is full of unbelievable joy and unbelievable sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day becomes a memory and the pain will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go. Sometimes when they go it will hurt, but you will be okay with it. It’s the way life works, after all.

【1】What can we learn about friendship, according to the text?

A.Friendship can not be easily affected by one’s family.

B.Friends are always around us and will never go away.

C.Friends in childhood are sometimes forgotten by us.

D.Friends in childhood are the best no matter what happens.

【2】What should we do with friends who are no longer friendly in the author’s opinion?

A.Care about them and do the best for them when we are together.

B.Forget them and make new friends who have a lot in common with us.

C.Find the reason why our friendship has changed.

D.Do our best to control them and make them listen to us.

【3】What the old timers and seniors in the last paragraph tell you about friendship will _______.

A.make you have no good friends

B.help you have healthy understanding of friendship

C.remind you to always help your friends

D.lead you to be a powerful man

【4】The best title of the passage could be ________.

D.How to face the changes in friendship

  • 29、   Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.

    AVOID BIG EVENTS

Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost 169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost 118.15.

If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.

    STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION

If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.

Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was 95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was 75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just 62.95.

    LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative, consider checking into a selfcatering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city center buildings. A great example is the historic O’Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for 420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.

    GET ON A BIKE

London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.

Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around 1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or 5 per day).

1“Farringdon” in Paragraph 5 is most probably ________.

A.the tube line to Covent Garden B.a hotel away from the train station

C.the name of a travel agency D.an ideal holiday destination

2The passage shows that the O’Neill Flat ________.

    A.lies on the ground floor

    B.provides cooking tools for tourists

    C.is located in central London

D.costs over 100 on average per day in late September

3The main purpose of the passage is ________.

A.to offer visitors some moneysaving tips

B.to show visitors the importance of selfhelp

C.to supply visitors with hotel information

D.to tell visitors how to book in advance

I was backpacking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Barú. It is one of the only places on earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time.

I set off before sunrise. It was a bit cold, so I had pulled on leggings under my trousers. I’ve always felt safe travelling as a solo (单独) woman. I love the freedom. When I got to the base at 7 am, the ranger (护林员) was unwilling to let me go alone, but relented (缓和) because an American couple were behind me.

The first part of the climb was beautiful. I walked for an hour and had reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me.

I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively towards me. I could see their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.

I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as evenly as possible. But I was terrified. Then one dashed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. I was shocked. He held on for a few seconds. The pain took my breath away as I felt his fangs (犬牙) in my flesh. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one launched at me.

I tried to keep walking, and he finally let go. Then he was behind me, growling (嗥叫). I kept going, my body shaking, until after about 15 minutes I was out of their sight.

When I thought it was safe, I stopped.
