No one knows when the first house was built and who was the first one to build the house. But the houses are changing all the time.
【1】What will the house of the future look like?Could it have gardens on its walls,or a pool with fish for dinner?Architects(建筑学家)believe that they may come true one day.The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible in the future.
【2】Many architects in the world would like to build a house like a leaf—the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day.The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even make fresh air for the room. The“root”(根)of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to control the room’s temperature.
【3】Like a lizard(蜥蜴),changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the brisht sun,the cover of the house will turn white to protect it from strong heat.During dark days,it turns dark and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
【4】This design is perhaps for the future of food.It has a garden on the outside wall of the house.People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them.So every morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
【5】Looking to the future isn’t the only way to be green.Sometimes, the old ways of building houses can also help cut down energy use.For example,a chimney(烟囱)can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to run out of the chimney.
A.Learning from the past
B.Meals at home
C.The lizard house
D.Houses in the future
E.The tree house
F.The history of the houses

A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, “What happened?”
Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is a danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language too. When a bee found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the other bees to go with it to find food.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音) when it is pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.
But human beings have something that no animals have—a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information and to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animal can do this. No animal has the wonderful power of language.
No one knows how man learned to make words. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all of them. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.
【1】When a rabbit gives the other rabbits a signal of danger, it runs into its hole.
【2】When a rabbit wants to tell other rabbits something happy, he runs with its tail moving up and down.
【3】When the rabbit saw a man, it would stop to move its tail.
【4】A dog can tell something by barking.
【5】No animals can do better than men in language.
【6】It has been proved that no animal is able to express its actions and feelings with words.
【7】We can make our vocabulary larger by reading as many book as we can.

BBC World Have Your Say: “ Life in China” Every day, BBC News on TV,radio and online brings you stories from across the world. But what we want to hear are the stories that matter to you. Have got a story about life in China today? If you do, please put your stories here. |
I like travaling and I have traveled a lot around China. During the trip, I often find that a number of Chinese don’t have good pulic manners(举止). They always talk loudly on the phone and smoke everywhere. The worst is that they often break the rules in public. For example, when I travled in HongKong in January this year, I saw a kid eating noodles on the underground , which is against the rules. However, the kid’s mother didn’t think he did wrong. Can you believe it? Let’s improve our public manners. (Mike, Shenzhen) |
I am a 14-year-old boy from a poor village in Fuyang , Anhui Province. Like many other left-behind children(留守儿童)in China, I live with my grandparents now. my father went to work inn Shanghai several years ago. Last year, my mother went there to care for him because his health is not as good as before. They tell me to listen to my grandparents and call me about twice a month to ask about my study. I really miss my parents and I hope I can afford to go to school in Shanghai. I think every child needs parents’ love and care. (Wu Peigen, Anhui Province) |

28、Being a youth is one thing, and being a good one is another. A good youth should have these qualities: F【1】of all, health, a healthy body is the best wealth. Without it, n【2】can be done well. If you are poor in health, you’ll have to take m【3】day after day. Even you can’t work, do sports and so on; Secondly, one must be of good quality. Always do something for others. Help those in trouble and c【4】about the people around you. If everyone did the same, what a w【5】world this would be! Thirdly, one must have the ability to work with others. Cooperation and communication are two important k【6】to better human relationship. Everyone needs friends b【7】no one can live through life alone or do everything he wants to.
Besides the examples above, patriotism(爱国主义) is the one we should never forget. Patriotism means a love of one’s country. It is one of the h【8】qualities of human’s. Everyone should love his own country. But people sometimes think that patriots(爱国者)must be fighters or that they live in a time of f【9】for their country. That is wrong. A good youth’s work is not only fighting. A good youth will do the things his country asks him to do.
I think a good youth of today should also have some training in a【10】. If everyone can enjoy art and be able to make more of it for others, then people will live better and enjoy more.
29、Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage (选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)
Wang Fei, a Chinese student, and Mary, an American student studying Chinese in China, were in a supermarket. They saw a young man ______ down the stairs. In his hurry, he missed the last two steps and fell onto the ground. He tried to stand up ______ people around him laughed. Luckily, he seemed to be OK.
Mary found Wang Fei smiling a little and was not happy ______ it. “Tell me, Wang Fei, how could people laugh when someone fell like that? Why didn’t they go up and ask him if he was hurt?”
Wang Fei said, “Because they knew he wasn’t hurt too _____.”
“But I still don’t understand. A fall is a fall. In my culture, people would never laugh!”
This is an example. The Chinese and the western will think and act differently when seeing _______ a thing. Chinese people are used to laughing or smiling. Very often the person who is in embarrassing situation would also laugh or smile to get out of it.______, if someone gets hurt seriously, it will not be a laughing matter any more. People will help him or her instead.
But, in that case, a westerner will rush over and help the person get up. If a westerner falls, he or she, like a Chinese person, may try to make a joke if he or she is not hurt. If two close friends are walking together, and one falls ______ clearly isn’t hurt, a common joke is to say “Have a nice trip.”
So different people have different habits and different countries have different cultures.
