26、Dr. Teruo Higa was born on December 28, 1941 on Okinawa and grew up there. He studied agriculture and took his doctorate from the Agricultural Research Department of Kyushu University Graduate School. He became a lecturer in 1970 and has been professor horticulture (园艺) since 1982.
Dr. Higa is famous for creating EM technology. He created EM technology in order to address the problem of excess waste and bad farming techniques in the present-day world. EM stands for effective microorganisms (有效微生物群). It is a multi-culture of coexisting anaerobic (无氧的,厌氧的) and aerobic (需氧的,有氧的) microorganisms. Microorganisms (微生物) are the smallest complete units of life. They can exist independent of a bigger organism. Bacteria are considered microorganisms. They are constantly at work, some helping bigger organisms, and others bringing decay and bad health. These opposing processes of constructive and destructive forces are always ongoing, creating a balance. If the balance tips towards the destructive side, the host organism grows ill. If it tips towards the constructive side, the organism experiences good health.
These organisms can be used in farming to create a good growing environment for all kinds of crops and animals. The process involves collecting human and animal waste products such as kitchen garbage and manure. This is then sealed into a barrel along with a certain amount of EM powder. The microorganisms then turn the waste into mulch (覆盖物,护根), which acts as a great source of nutrients for crops and animals. Rice paddies (稻田) that are treated with EM produce harvests that are much bigger than those of conventional farms. Moreover, EM rice paddies require less tilling (耕作) and weeding than other paddies.
Dr. Higa’s ideas have caught on around the world. One of his biggest successes was in North Korea, where his technology was used to create a record-breaking crop yield. EM helped many crops, such as corn, Welsh onions and Chinese cabbages in North Korea. For North Korea, this was a godsend.

27、Eighty-eight-year-old Robert Seaman has been drawing since he was a boy. At the age of 60, he left his job, selling houses to take up his hobby professionally. But it took COVID-19 to fully return him to what he loved to do.
Seaman said, “I would love to go up to my room where I had a drawing table and I’d spend hours up there drawing pictures. That’s what I’m doing now.”
Seaman recently has marked one year since he started drawing what he calls his daily doodles(涂鸦). He spends about six hours a day working on his doodles. “After a long life, I’m back doing what I did when I was 11 years old,” he said. “And it’s great, I love it. I’m so lucky that I can do this.”
Seaman moved into the town Maplewood just two weeks before the pandemic(流行病) restraint cut people off from the outside world. For many months, they could not leave their rooms. It was only recently that they were permitted to interact in common areas.
“The first thought I had was to just do some kind of ‘dark stuff’ that reflected the restriction that we were experiencing and the difficulties that were caused by this pandemic,” he said. “Then it just started to grow, and I thought it would be interesting to do one a day.” As the days passed, Seaman’s art got brighter in both subject matter and appearance.
He sent the doodles to his daughter, Robin Hayes, and other friends and family. Hayes then shared them on Facebook. As interest grew, she began offering the drawings for sale on-line. And all the money earned was donated to causes, including a COVID-19 aid program, a homeless shelter and an organization that helps refugees.

29、Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock(有现货的), the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction.
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”
Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

B.He usually does not buy anything.
C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.
D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.
【3】What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?
A.Men do not try clothes on in a shop while women do.
B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.
C.The time they take over buying clothes.

Adam, 8, and Peter, 10, played at the seaside with their mom every day. Every single day, they would come across an old man who would sit quietly on a chair, watching the waves.
One day, the brothers approached him. For some reason, the old man who always avoided people started a long conversation with the two boys and introduced himself as Walter Bridgeton. After a while, Peter finally asked the question they had been longing to ask: “Sir, why do you sit out here every day?”
“Well, I have been waiting here for my brother, James, for 10 years. We were in the army together and then were sent to different countries. This happened a long time ago. When we last saw each other, we promised to meet right here, where we used to walk with our mother,” the old man explained.
“How do you know he’s still coming?” Adam asked.
“That’s the thing. I don’t know. They gave me his army dog tags(军籍身份牌), but they never found him. He is still missing,” he said. The old man patted the boys’ heads and said, “Look after your brother, boys.”
The boys enjoyed his company ever since that day, and they were also surprised to know they lived near each other. Deeply moved by Walter’s story, the brothers decided to use social media to spread it, hoping to find his brother. One day, they went to the beach to tell him about what they did, but didn’t find him at his usual spot. “Something must have happened. Let’s go to his house now,” Peter said.
