二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Towards evening, Jennifer was walking on the beach with a gentle breeze(微风)blowing through her hair. Looking up at the golden red sun ball, she was surprised by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading(褪色)into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.

The atmosphere(空气)relaxed her. This was what she needed. “It’s getting late,” she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.” She wondered how her parents would react when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself to bungalow (平房)163, where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted(荒芜). She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters, she would have been safe in her house.

It was really getting dark now. She wished she had her favorite coat on. It might keep her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought dissipated(消散) when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now…

She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen and saw a note written by her father, “Dear Ellen, there’s some coffee ready; I went looking.” But where was Ellen? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in and saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up, but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up, something was different. She wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas(睡衣).

It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice. “Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.”

【1】The author mentions the views of the beach in Para.1 in order to __________.

    A. tell us the time of the story

    B. show Jennifer’s eased mind

    C. show Jennifer’s loneliness

    D. indicate the beauty of nature

【2】Jennifer decided to go home because __________.

    A. it was getting cold

    B. she began to miss her parents

    D. she knew nobody would take care of the garden

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Jennifer went home to fetch her favorite coat.

    B. Jennifer’s father was so worried that he couldn’t take care of the outside garden.

    C. Jennifer understood why the outside garden was left uncared for.

    D. Jennifer’s father used to be too strict with her.

【4】Which of the following shows the change of Jennifer’s feeling?

  • 27、If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings(周围的事物) and mentally notice alternate exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.

Make sure you know the type of ground you are standing on. For example, in a crowd of moving people wet ground can be dangerous, causing you to fall. You should know the general atmosphere of the event, as panic situations can often be predicted. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escape route. Always stay closer to the escape route

If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get injured or even be killed by being stepped on by other people. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd; take advantage of any space that may open up to move sideways to the crowd movement where the flow is weaker. Keep  your hands up by your chest, which will protect your chest during the movement.

If you fall, get up quickly. If you can’t get up because you are injured, get someone to pull you back up. If you fall and can not get up, keep moving by crawling(爬行)in the same direction of the crowd. Do not lie on your stomach or back, as this is dangerous for your body.

The worst situation is to be pushed by the crowd against an immovable object. Try to shun

High walls, as the crowd pressure can build up rapidly. After you’re pushed forward, the way you move is on a diagonal(斜线). There’s always space between people. You work your way out that way till you get out of the crowd.

【1】 When you are in a crowd the first thing you do is ____.

    A. fight against the pressure

    B. stay closer to an immovable object

    C. move in the same direction of the crowd

    D. be familiar with the surroundings

【2】When you are in the middle of a moving crowd, ____.

    A. you must go to the exit quickly

    B. you must not stand still or sit down

    C. you’d better stop moving forward

    D. you should push your way out

【3】The underlined word “shun” in the last paragraph probably means ____.

    A. leave for   B. keep off

    C. jump on D. break down

【4】 What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. How to survive the rush crowd

    B. How to enjoy yourself in a crowd

    C. How to protect yourself outside

    D. How to run away from people

A dam is like a wall that is built across a waterway to control the flow of the water. For many years, dams were built only of earth and rocks.Today, many dams are built of concrete.

When a dam is built, water is trapped and held behind the dam. This water forms a lake. The lakes can be used for recreation or for irrigating,or watering crops. The lakes also provide potable water, water that is safe for drinking. This potable water is piped from the lake into houses and other buildings. The lake water further serves as a home,or habitat, for fish and waterfowl.

Dams are often built to provide flood control.Just before the rainy season, the water in the dam is allowed to flow out very slowly. This lowers the water level in the lake so that snowmelt and rainfall can be stored there in every spring and used as needed during the rest of the year.

Some dams are built to use the power of falling water to make electricity.Such dams have powerhouses that contain machines;turbines and generators.Water falls from the lake to the river below the dam.As the water falls,it is sent through the powerhouse. There, the force of the water turns the turbines and generators and produces electrical power needed to light and heat buildings.
