24、Abbreviations(缩写) are now widely used in our daily lives. Here are some of them. Are you familiar with them?
R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, “répondez, s'il vous plaît,” which means “please reply.” If R.S.V.P. is written on an invitation, it means the invited guest must tell the host(主人) whether or not they plan to attend the party as soon as possible. Because the hosts who are planning a dinner party or a wedding need to know how many people to count on and how much food and drink to buy. More important, though, it is polite to reply someone who was nice enough to invite you, even if it is to say that you are sorry that you will not be able to attend.
B.Y.O.B. has been used first in the early 1970s to mean “bring your own bottle (of wine)”, although in present-day it is just as likely to mean “bring your own booze” or “bring your own beer”. It was used by small restaurants that was not allowed to sell wine. But now B.Y.O.B. is often placed on an invitation to tell the guests that the host will not be providing wine and that guests are welcome to bring their own.
R.I.P stands for “rest in peace” in English, The phrase was not found before the 8th century. It became ubiquitous(普遍现象) on the tombs of Christians in the 18th century, Now, it is always written on tombstones to express the wish of forever rest and peace to someone who has died.
P.K. means “Player Killing” originally. The word P.K. is now also used in China and Taiwan as a verb(动词). In fact, there may actually be no player killing. It is most used in 1v1 situations like 1v1 basketball, 1v1 chess, 1v1 footrace and so on. P.K. can also be used in situations where one team is against another in a 1 team vs 1 team competition like in the NBA, soccer, baseball and so on.

Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. Du Fu, known as the Sage of Poetry, lived and wrote in the eighth century, and his work is still available to modern Chinese readers. Du Fu, in fact, is still widely quoted (引用) in China today, and he has had a great influence on Chinese poetry in the past 1,200 years. However, the poet’s complete works weren’t unavailable in English translation in the past.
Conant University Professor Stephen Owen, who spent eight years on The Poetry of Du Fu, a 3,000-page translation published by De Gruyter, has completed the first English translation of the complete works of Du Fu.
Because Du Fu, like Shakespeare, is known for great width — in subject, in the way he uses language to pass on different registers (不同场合用的语言和文体) (see “Out with the Sake, In With the Wine”) and layered (多层次的) meanings — he is one of the most challenging poets to translate. Chinese poetry, a literary tradition in which tenses are absent, pronouns rare, and the use of the singular and plural forms are hard to understand, is well known for seeming ambiguous (模糊不清的) at times. Within that tradition, the interpretation of Du Fu’s work is especially contested. Owen’s critical edition, in which his translations face the original texts, brings a scholarly aid for the first time to English-speaking readers ready to engage with China’s literary lion.

Smartphone ban (禁令)
According to the survey conducted last year, 68.1 percent of Chinese primary and junior high school students have their own smartphones. To keep students from playing with their smartphones in class, some schools have already banned smartphones on campus.
Lei Yanqin, a deputy (代表) of the National People’s Congress (NPC, 全国人民代表大会), suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only bother teachers, but also make it difficult for students to concentrate (集中注意力). She added that students might also show off their phones too much.
Video game rating system (分级制度)
Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory (《王者荣耀》), Guangming Daily reported. With their computers and tablets, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some games have violent (暴力的) or vulgar (粗俗的) content that might not be suitable for young people.
