四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Is It Better to Read Books or Listen to Them?

We often think how fast we learn something depends on how smart we are. If your brain is taking in material quickly, you’re clever; if not, well, that doesn’t say great things about your IQ. But science shows context (上下文) and technique (技术) actually play a big role in how fast we learn, and even small changes – like the way you use to read – can make a big difference.

Audio (音频的) books have plenty of advantages: you can enjoy them anywhere, even in the car, and not printing books saves trees. Poor readers also often find them more interesting. But according to the latest research, if your goal isn’t to pass the time in traffic, but instead to learn something difficult, you should choose a physical book.

In a recent opinion piece in the New York Times, psychology (心理学) professor Daniel T.Willingham mentioned a 2010 study where 48 students either read or listened to an article about child psychology. Although the students spent the same amount of time with their material and did about the same number of distracting (分散注意力) activities while they absorbed the information, they scored very differently on a 10-item quiz later. Generally, the readers scored 81 percent but while the listeners scored 59 percent. Why does listening vs reading material have such a great effect on learning?

Willingham explains that first, most of us read more slowly than we listen (especially when pausing and rereading), and when you’re trying to absorb new information, slower seems to be better. “About 10 to 15 percent of eye movements during reading are actually regressive – meaning the eyes are going back and re-checking,” he explains to TIME. “This happens very quickly…”

Second, books offer visual cues (可视线索) that help our brains organize and understand new information. Things like chapter breaks, subheadings, and lists help us in making sense of the material and understanding how it fits together. You lose all that when you go the audio way.

The bottom line is simple: Don’t feel shame about passing your time in traffic with an audio book. However, be aware of audio’s limitations when it comes to studying, and seriously consider choosing good old-fashioned reading instead.

1According to the writer, you should choose to read a book to ______.

A.take in the information B.pass the time in traffic

C.learn something difficult D.organize new information

2A “physical book” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.

A.an audio book B.a book about physics

C.a book about computer D.a book made of paper or cloth

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.To read a book is better than to listen to it.

    B.Readers are cleverer than listeners.

C.Reading books is a good way to pass time.

D.How fast we learn depends on how smart we are.

  • 25、An invention in front of your eyes

What is the most important invention of all time? Is it the written word that helps us to record information? Is it the telephone that lets us talk to people from all over the world? Is it the car that lets us travel at great speeds to meet others? Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, thinks it is something quite different. He says the most important invention might be bright in front of your eyes. He is talking about a simple pair glasses.

Modern eye glasses were invented around 1000 years ago. They were more than just a convenient way to read. Before glasses, writers, scientists or teachers who could not see properly had to memorize everything. After about ten years of poor eyesight, they could not remember well enough and could not work. Glasses meant that people could work in their old age.

People who wanted to remember some information could write it down and read it. Eye glasses are one of the world’s greatest inventions and were probably worn by the people who designed the first telephones and cars.

1The invention of the written word is important because___________.

    A. we need it to listen

    B. we need it to record information

    C. we just need it to read

    A. memorize everything

    B. write down everything

    C. read everything

4What happened after glasses were invented?

    A. people could not remember well enough.

    B. people could not remember well enough.

    C. people could write down some information and read it.

5From this passage, we can know __________.

    A. modern eye glasses were invented 100 years ago

    B. people who designed the first telephones and cars probably wore those glasses

    C. the author of this article is an American

  • 26、“Everything happens for the best.” Whenever I faced disappointments my mother would say this to me.

After I graduated from college in 2002, I decided to find a job in radio as a sports announcer (播音员). I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But unluckily, I was refused every time.

At one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire (雇用) an inexperienced person and suggested that I try my luck at smaller stations. Following her advice, I went back to Dixon. There were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local sportsman to work for it. I applied for (申请) the job, but I was refused again.

“Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Lowa. The program director, Peter, told me they had already hired an announcer.

I left his office, and felt totally disappointed. While I was waiting for the elevator, I heard someone calling. It was Peter. “What do you know about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to broadcast (播报) an imaginary game. Pleased with my performance, he offered me a chance to work there.

On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words, “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous (先前的) disappointment.”

A.The writer learned a lot from what her mother said.

    B.There was a radio-announcing job at college.

C.The writer didn’t want to be a sports announcer at all.

【5】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Something happens because of the disappointment.

  • 27、阅读下列内容,从每小题所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案

Great news! Archaeologists(考古学家) confirm that the tomb found in Xihu township of Yangzhou belongs to Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty. Do you know Emperor Yang Guang? He is considered as one of the worst tyrants(君主) who brought the Sui Dynasty to an end in Chinese history. But in fact, he started the construction of the Grand Canal(大运河) to connect the North and the South, making Yangzhou a transportation hub (中心)city.

As we know, Emperor Yang loved Yangzhou very much. Throughout his life, he paid three visits to Yangzhou. On his first tour to Yangzhou, he stayed here for eight months. And the second time, he enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle in Yangzhou. He watched the song and dance shows all day and stayed in Yangzhou for nearly a year. The third time, he enjoyed himself drinking wine without planning to go back to the capital. It lasted for almost one and a half years. In the year AD 618, Emperor Yang was killed by his followers in one of his palaces in Yangzhou, and the Sui Dynasty ended.

Everyone complains that the Sui Dynasty ended because of the Grand Canal. However, it is still an important way for people to travel. In the year AD 605, Emperor Yang ordered the canal to be dug. Digging such a long canal proved to be very difficult. 3.6 million people worked on it and in less than a year many of them lost their lives. When the construction was completed, the journey from the north to the south became more direct. It is the longest canal in the world. It runs from Beijing to Hangzhou, covering a distance of nearly 1,800 kilometres and joining five rivers including the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. Even today, the Grand Canal still plays an important role in travel. Every day, ships go up and down the canal, carrying things between the north and the south.

【1】During his life, how long did Emperor Yang stay in Yangzhou in total?

    A. One and a half years.

    B. Two years and a half.

    C. Two years and eight months.

    D. Three years and two months.

【2】Which of the following is true?

    A. Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty is considered one of the best tyrants.

    B. Emperor Yang was killed by the robbers in one of his palaces in Yangzhou.

    C. Everyone complains that the Sui Dynasty ended because of the canal.

    D. The canal runs from Beijing to Yangzhou, covering a distance of nearly 1,800 kilometres.

【3】The best title should be “______________”.

    A. Emperor Yang Guang and the Grand Canal

    B. The tomb found in Xihu township of Yangzhou

    C. The life of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty

    D. The construction of the Grand Canal
