  • 24、Bacteria Show New Ways to Recycle Plastic

Recently, researchers have reported on new ways to break down different kinds of plastic. The new development could lead to easier, high-quality recycling, and help deal with harmful plastic pollution.

The world is drowning (淹没) in plastic, but only about 9% of plastic products are ever recycled. Every year, over 7,720 billion kilograms of plastic finds its way into the world’s oceans. But bacteria may help recycle, even when humans don’t. Bacteria are tiny living things — so small that you need a microscope to see them. Bacteria feed themselves in many different ways. Some bacteria can “eat” other things by changing the chemicals in those things into something that will help the bacteria grow.

The secret to this is enzymes (酶). Bacteria use enzymes to cause chemical changes. Enzymes can work like a pair of scissors, breaking apart other materials.

Most people know about PET plastic. It’s used in water and soda bottles. About 63.5 billion kilograms are produced every year. Most PET is thrown away, but even when it’s recycled, it can’t be made into new bottles. Usually it’s turned into products like carpets.

In 2012, in some decaying (腐烂的) leaves, scientists discovered an enzyme called LCC that slowly breaks apart PET plastic. Years later, scientists working at the French company Carbios chose LCC from nearly 100,000 enzymes. It was the best at breaking down PET.

But the scientists wanted to improve LCC. They studied the enzyme and the way it attacked the PET. By testing thousands and thousands of small changes to the enzyme, they came up with a new kind of LCC. The new kind can eat through PET very quickly and it can even survive (存活) at higher temperatures.

The process turns the PET plastic back into the materials that it was made from. Those materials can then be used again to make new bottles or other products.

The researchers tested their new LCC against the original (原先的) enzyme, and were impressed with the results. When the conditions were just right, the new enzyme was able to break up 90% of the PET in just 10 hours. The original enzyme took about 20 hours and only broke up half of the PET.

【1】What can we learn about bacteria?

A.They can be seen without microscopes.

B.They can break apart other materials directly.

C.They use enzymes wo cause physical changes in things.

D.They are tiny creatures that feed on unusual forms of “food”.

【2】LCC to enzyme is like ________.

    A.key to door

    B.right to left

    C.rose to flower

    D.egg to chick

【3】What can LCC do to PET plastic?

A.It can make PET plastic much harder than before.

B.It can make PET plastic no longer a serious pollutant.

C.It can change PET plastic into tiny living things.

D.It can prevent PET plastic from breaking down.

【4】Thanks to LCC, PET plastic could be recycled by ________.

A.being turned back into the materials it was made from

B.being thrown away in some decaying lcaves

C.being remade into a new kind of soda

    D.being put under high temperatures

【5】What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A.It’s very expensive to get LCC from the decaying leaves.

B.With LCC, PET plastic will be used more widely in making products.

C.More and more PET plastic find its way into the oceans because of LCC.

D.The original enzyme can break down the PET plastic more quickly than LCC.

  • 25、You don’t have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is looking for creative ways to make a change-and he’s inviting bikers to join him.

Daan Roosgaarde is a designer from the Netherlands. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog (烟雾) Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In the Netherlands, he designed a shining bicycle path.

Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company ofo to create a new product for public use. It’s an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker’s face.

It’s no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it’s common for thick clouds of haze (霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions (排放物), to cover areas of China.

In 2016. only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country’s air quality standards, according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

“Of course one tower and a few bikes won’t solve China’s air pollution problem,” Daan said, “but smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities.”

    【1】According to the writer, ________.

A.air pollution is not a big problem in China

B.creative ideas may help improve city life

C.only scientists can solve big environmental problems

D.the survey of 338 cities nationwide was not necessary

【2】The air-cleaning machine offers clean air to the biker by ________.

    A.blowing out dirty air

    B.running fast with the bike

C.cleaning the air around the biker

D.breathing in dirty air and cleaning it

【3】Daan is inviting bikers to join him in order to ________.

    A.raise money for the tower

    B.test his new machine

C.help solve the air pollution problem

    D.make more Chinese friends

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Breathing in and out

    B.Biking for fresh air

    C.Surveys from the government

    D.China’s air pollution problem

  • 26、People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.

A study by a team at Northumbria University showed that smokers lost more of their memory when compared to non-smokers.

And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information back to almost the same level as non-smokers.

The study involved more than seventy 18-to-25-year-olds and included a research of the university .Those who took part were asked to recall small details, such as a list of songs played at the Students’ Union and tasks completed at various points .

Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 %of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 %and those who had never smoked recalled 81 % of tasks.

Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University’s Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in movements against smoking. He said, “This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an effect on memory.”

“We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits (好处)for the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can have knock-on benefits for cognitive functions (认知)too. ’’

1The research by Tom Heffernan’s team shows that smokers remember_____.

    A. 15% less than those who have never smoked

    B. 33% less than those who have given up smoking

    C. 22% less than those who have never smoked

    D. 22% less than those who have given up smoking

2It can be learned from the passage that ________.

    A. nobody shows any interest in research by Tom Heffernan’s team

    B. nobody believes the result of the research by Tom Heffernan’s team

    C. nobody will risk their health or even life to go on smoking anymore

    D. nobody had done the same research as Tom Heffernan’s team before

3According to Tom Heffernan, it is necessary for smokers to ______.

    A. train their memory   B. give up smoking

    C. remember small details   D. Be given more tasks

    A. Warning :Smokers could be more forgetful.

    B. Warning: Smokers wouldn’t get back memory

    C. Warning: Smoking must be harmful to health

    D. Warning: Smoking might cause mental problems
