四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Every year on my birthday since I was 11, a white gardenia(栀子花)was sent to my house. No card ever came with it. Calls to the flower shop were not helpful at all. After some time I stopped trying to find out the sender's name and was just pleased with the beautiful flower, in soft pink paper.

I couldn't stop imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming(幻想)about the sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She'd ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Perhaps it was one of my classmates. Perhaps it was the old man who I once helped. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy that I had met.

A month before my high school graduation(毕业),my father died. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my coming graduation dance, and I didn't care whether I had a new dress or not. My mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia: lovely, strong and perfect.

My mother died ten years after I was married. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

1The writer received ________ on her birthday since she was 11.

A.a white gardenia B.a card C.a card and soft pink paper

2The writer was very ________when she was imagining who sent the flower.

    A.happy B.sad C.worried

3It can be inferred(推断)from the passage that ________.

A.the writer didn't get a new dress for the dance

B.the writer probably joined in the graduation dance

C.the writer's father died ten years earlier than her mother

4The writer got the gardenias from ________ on her birthdays.

    A.the old man B.the boy C.her mother

5The passage mainly talks about ________.

    A.what a gardenia meant

    B.what a girl dreamed about

C.how a mother loved her children

  • 25、   One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison (监狱).The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.

At that moment, I thought to myself, "Why aren't most adults this way?" Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don't even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they're not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure (失败).

However, with kids, when they fall down, they don't consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected "falling down" with the word "failure". What's more, they probably think to themselves that it's quite okay to fall down and that it's not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they remain energetic.

I was deeply impressed by the boy's persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.

1What did the little boy do when he fell down?

A.He cried and lay on the grass. B.He asked his mother for help.

C.He got up and went on running. D.He got up and stood there crying.

2In the writer's opinion, what might the little boy regard his falling down as?

A.A failure. B.A joke. C.An interesting game. D.A learning experience.

3In the writer's opinion, why can't many adults succeed?

A.Because they are afraid of being embarrassed.

    B.Because they can't find a good excuse.

C.Because once they fail, they won't attempt again.

D.Because they don't allow themselves to make mistakes.

4The underlined word "attempt" in Paragraph 2 means ________.

    A.facing B.doubting C.trying D.giving up .

5What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Practice makes perfect. B.Failure is the mother of success.

C.All roads lead to Rome. D.Each coin has two sides.

  • 26、Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents; however, it is not true.

Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap(消除代沟).

Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.

Try to reach a compromise(和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.

Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.

A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. Please have a try!

  • 27、   I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in "Section L". I found out later that everyone called Section L "Loserville". It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!

I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable (痛苦的) I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that. Ana's texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings, but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, and I had to try to make things better.

The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!

I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn't, I was still stuck in "Loserville", and some people were still mean (苛刻) to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.

But what did change was me-I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!

I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn't so hard any more. Even though I couldn't change my situation, I could change my attitude-and that made all the difference.

    1"Loserville" is a section for ________.

    A.smart students B.low achievers C.class leaders D.new comers

2The writer complained all the time in the new environment because ________.

A.Ana didn't text back to her B.she was a good student

C.her friends hurt her feelings D.she was unfairly treated

3What made a difference in changing the situation?

A.She managed to go back to Illinois. B.She ended the friendship with Ana.

C.She began to make friends with others. D.She fought back with her classmates.

4What's the best title for the passage?

A.Friends Forever B.Say Goodbye to "Loserville"

C.An Incident at School D.Unhappiness in "Loserville"

  • 28、A young painter completed a nice picture. To get people’s t1 about his skills, he put it at a crossing on a busy street. And below it a board read, “Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. S2 I’m new, I might make some mistakes in it. Please put a cross (叉号) wherever you see a mistake.”

When he came back in the evening to c3 his picture, he was shocked to see that the whole picture was filled with crosses. And some people e4 wrote something on his picture. Sadly, he ran to his master and said, “I failed. And if this is what I have learned, I’m not w5 teaching. ”

The master smiled and suggested, “I’ll let you know that you’re a great artist. Now go to paint the same picture again and give it to me. ”

Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the new picture exactly at the same place. Now the master took out another board w6 said, “Gentlemen, I painted this piece. There might be some mistakes in it. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. Please give me a h7. If you see a mistake, pick up the brush and correct it.”

Two days later, they came back to the place. The young painter was s8 to see that actually there was not a single correction done!

It’s easy to say but difficult to do. If you want to help people i9 their behavior, you’d better learn how to help people change their attitudes (态度) or skills. Also, always remember not to judge (评判) y10 by someone else’s words and feel bad.
