24、Tom and his best friend Rob were out of school for the summer. They had been swimming, gone to the movies, played video games, and even built a castle out of some old cardboard boxes. But today they were so bored. “At least we would have something to do.” Tom thought for a while and suggested, “Let’s make some popcorn and lemonade and sell it outside.”
The boys went to the kitchen and asked Tom’s mom if she would help them make some lemonade while they popped the popcorn. Tom’s mom got the lemons from the refrigerator and also a small amount of sugar. She mixed up the lemonade while the boys started popping the popcorn.
Tom and Rob got a small table from the garage and set it up near the sidewalk. They made a red sign telling everyone that popcorn and lemonade was for sale. The boys sat for about ten minutes before they got their first sale. Mrs. Jenkins, one of their neighbors, was walking her dog. “It’s so hot today.” “I sure can use a drink,” she said. Soon the boys were busy handing out popcorn to Mr. Baker. He was walking down the street sending the mail. “I need a break,” he said. “Walking all over the neighborhood gave me an appetite.”
The boys had only three popcorn bags left and enough lemonade for three more cups. “Wow, I didn’t think the popcorn and lemonade would sell that fast. We made six dollars,” said Tom. “If we get bored again before school starts, we can try selling more lemonade with cookies(饼干) next time,” laughed Rob.

25、 One year ago, I worked at a traditional Chinese medicine store. Business was not bad. Every day we mixed medicinal herbs (中药) for patients, so the store was always full of a strong herbal smell.
After I had worked there for a time, a boy of 13 or 14 started coming and sitting on the stairs outside the store for a while every day. It seemed strange to me.
"Do you like the herbal smell?" I asked him one day.
"I grew up with this kind of smell," he said. He told me that his mother took herbal medicine for years, so he could mix herbs for his mother when he was very young. He mixed the herbs with deep love, hoping his mother would get better as soon as possible.
"Is your mother well now?" I asked.
He shook his head. "My mother passed away three years ago." Looking up into the sky, he went on: "When I first passed by here and smelled the herbs, I thought of my mother. It is comforting to remember those days when she was alive. So I come here every day to sit for a moment. When I sit around this smell, I feel as if my mother is still alive and is waiting for her medicine in her room."
【1】The boy came to the store every day because he ______.

26、 It's no secret that laughter works wonders for us. And much research has been carried out into the good that laughter can do for our general health and well-being. It has been found to release endorphins (释放安多芬), our bodies’natural“feel-good"chemicals, into our blood. But as we grow older, we are more likely to find fewer things funny. A child will laugh on average 300 times a day. By the time we reach adulthood, this number is around 20. But what's behind this? One theory(理论) suggests that it's not a problem of us losing our sense of humor but rather, as we grow older, we're socially conditioned to take things a bit more seriously.
Laughter is very much something we do with others. Studies have shown that we are 30 times more likely to find something funny when we are with others than when we are by ourselves. But to laugh with others, we do need to feel a connection to them. We need to feel comfortable in their company. That's why it can be difficult to laugh in the presence of strangers. Laughter is also very contagious and one person's laugh can spread quickly throughout a group of people. But often what makes us join in is the fear of standing out and being different. We laugh, even if we don' t really get the joke, especially in groups controlled by a powerful person. When the head teacher tells a joke, for example, you laugh, even though later you might wonder if the joke was really that funny at all.
There are many different reasons why we laugh. Here are three widely accepted theories:
The Incongruity Theory: It's often the unexpected that makes us laugh. When things that we are familiar with suddenly take a turn into the unknown, our expectations are challenged and that often results in laughter.
The Superiority Theory: We often find the mistakes and misfortunes of others funny. This would explain the popularity of online videos showing pranks (恶作剧).
The Relief Theory:Laugh offers light relief. It explains why there are so many jokes about the darker things in life. By being able to laugh at them, we are able to face them more easily.
【1】According to the theory in Paragraph 1, why do we laugh less as we grow older?
A.There are fewer funny things.
B.We take things more seriously.
C.Our body releases less endorphins.
D.We gradually lose our sense of humor.
【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.More funny things happen when we are with others.
B.It's difficult to build up connections with strangers.
C.We laugh sometimes because of social needs.
D.Powerful people are more likely to be funny.
【3】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The science of laughter
B.the power of laughter.
C.The sign of laughter.
D.The art of laughter
27、Yesterday my son, daughter and I went to the grocery store. In front of us in line was a little girl with her mother. The little girl was asking her mother for a box of Smarties. The polite way she was asking almost broke the mother’s heart, “I’m sorry, Honey, but we have no money to buy it.”

I was so excited that I bought a pack of Smarties for my son. I told him that I was proud of him, and that was for his act of generosity because he gave his own Smarties to others. When you get something you should be very thankful.”
