四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Today, I want to tell you some stories from my life. The first story is about connecting the dots(小圆点). Reed College, the college I attended, offered perhaps the best calligraphy(书法) lessons in the country. Calligraphy was attractive to me, so I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I didn’t hope for any real use of this in my life. It was just a hobby. But ten years, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.

You might be very confused about the meaning of what you are doing now. But you have to believe the dots will somehow connect in the future. Every effort you make is worth the price. It will pay off in the end. This belief has never let me down, and it has made all the differences in my life.

My second story is about love and loss. Woz and I started Apple in a garage when I was 20. But later, I got fired(解雇). How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, it just happened. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was so hard for me.

But it turned out to be the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t been fired from Apple, I wouldn’t become who I am now. The loss completed me. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. What’s more, you have to find out what you love. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. You’ll know when you find it.

1Jobs told us _____ stories in the passage.

    A. one B. two C. three D. four

2In the first paragraph, we can find EXCEPT “_____”.

    A. When Jobs designed the first computer many years later, he used his calligraphy.

    B. Jobs was interested in calligraphy when he was at college.

    C. It was just a hobby for Jobs to learn the calligraphy.

    D. Jobs wanted to be an artist when he was young.

    3Jobs believes _____.

    A. every effort we make is worth the price

    B. the dots will never connect in the future

    C. what we are doing is probably useless

    D. the thing we’re doing may not pay off

4The belief has never made Jobs _____.

    A. satisfied B. pleased C. sad D. happy

5The underlined word “brick” in the last paragraph probably means _____.

    A. something soft B. something hard

    C. something light D. something different

  • 25、If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories ? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.

    【1】Someone can’t have a good memory if ________.

    A.he can’t read or write

    B.he doesn’t use his memory

    C.his parents haven’t a good memory

D.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time

【2】If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ______.

A.you can’t use them any more

    B.they will become stronger

C.they become weak but they slowly become strong again

D.they become weak and won’t become strong until you use them again

【3】Which of the following is TRUE ?

A.Your memory works in the different way as your arms or legs

B.Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance for practice

C.Don’t learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory

D.A good memory comes from less practice

【4】Few people know that it is only ______ if a friend has a poor memory.

    A.his own fault

    B.his parents’ fault

    C.his teachers’ fault

    D.his grandmother’s fault

  • 26、   Now they Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain (西班牙) to visit  their family and friends. But they can't communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.

One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate with more people around the world. You don't have to depend on others to talk for you, so you are more independent. People who knew only one language must use others to help them communicate.

Furthermore, speaking the second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person's understanding of other culture. So knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.

Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can became closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other's problems.

The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don't try to learn another language. It's even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced.

    1What's the passage mainly about?

A.The benefits of learning other language.

B.The reasons why people come to America.

C.The importance of learning English well.

D.The ways of learning another language.

2The passage begins with the experience of Vieira family in order to ________.

A.introduce the main characters to the readers

B.describe the advantages of moving abroad

C.show the problem of speaking one language

D.discuss the need of understanding other cultures

3According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can ________.

    A.remember your mother language

    B.communicate more independently

C.make more friends around the world

D.have a better understanding of history
