21、My heart went out to the drama teacher I read about in a recent news item. Each parent from her class insisted that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical — “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend. 【1】
For starters, Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.
I was assigned the non-singing role of Miss Watson, the Maid. I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one line to learn, “That’s what I say.” 【2】 Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play.
At last, our production was put onstage. Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with “That’s what I say.” I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. 【3】
That night, I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a stand-out in a supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage, is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt. 【4】 If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos.
And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson, to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be. 【5】
A.So it is in life.
B.It was not to be.
C.It was anything but a great part.
D.My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.
E.It took the entire cast to make a good show.
F.There was an advantage, in my opinion, though.
G.I would hope all children could be a hit in life.
22、People Who Can’t Count
A recent study has discovered that dyscalculia, the mathematical inability in reading, affects about 5% of children in Britain. There is no simple way of finding out the reason and kids with this learning disability are usually labelled unintelligent.
So what exactly is this learning disability in mathematics? Unlike most people, dyscalculics cannot recognise three or four objects. 【1】 For example, they need to count the books on the table before they can say how many there are. In other words, they have to count them one by one. This is where they are different from others. The majority of us, if shown three or four similar things, can immediately recognise them.
【2】 They cannot understand, for instance, why two and three makes five. Another problem is not being able to tell which group contains more objects than the other. Experiments have proved that dyscalculics have not developed the part of the brain responsible for processing numbers.
There are also problems with the abstract concept of time for dyscalculics. 【3】 If your best friend is always late, he might be suffering from dyscalculia. Dyscalculics cannot keep track of time, and they never know how much time they have spent getting ready and how long it will take them to get to work. In addition, research has shown that dyscalculics behave oddly in social situations.【4】 This poor ability can explain why they never know how much change they are due or what kind of budget they need for their holiday.
On the other hand, dyscalculics are very good at creative arts. People suffering from dyscalculia can become painters or poets. Dyscalculia does not seem to delay language acquisition. Dyscalculic children acquire language at the same time as, if not earlier than, most children and have no problem learning to read or write. 【5】
A.Dyscalculics have difficulties in using numbers at all.
B.This disability scares children away from learning mathematics.
C.They have to go through the routine of counting even a small number of objects.
D.It is quite reasonable for dyscalculics to solve this kind of specific problem at any time.
E.They never know how much they should tip the waiter or they’ve got left after a shopping trip.
F.We can see that dyscalculia is only a learning disability, not a general indication of intelligence.
G.This can account for their difficulty in reading schedules and remembering the order in which things have happened.
23、 One day, I was taking a nap in the red chair in my office when I woke up to the sound of a car crash. I sat up and looked, immediately, out my window. Across the street, in a parking lot, a car had just backed into a chain-link fence. The car must have been moving fast, because it was in bad shape: Its hood had popped up. The fence was damaged, bent out in exactly the shape of the car’s back end.
I watched the driver get out of the car. He was strong with a shaved head; he wore cargo shorts and a flannel (法兰绒) shirt unbuttoned to expose his chest hair. I disliked him immediately. After a few seconds of assessing the damage, he attempted to pull the ruined fence back into place, but it wouldn’t move. He tried to push the fallen piece of bumper back onto his car, but that only made the rest of his bumper fall off too.
I sat in my red chair, looking out my window, silently cheering. I think I laughed out loud. This was a ridiculous masterpiece. He climbed out from under the collapsed fence and limped back to the apartment building above the lot, rubbing his elbow. The man—that disgusting man—was going to leave all the chaos behind for someone else to clean up.
But the man appeared a few minutes later with some tools. He got to work immediately, removing one of the fence’s bent support bars and hammering it straight on the asphalt (沥青). For the next hour, I watched out my window as he doggedly(固执地) fixed the fence, even improved it. Now the fence would be extra secure, stronger than before, impossible to damage.
This strange man was actually a hero. I was the lazy one, with my kneejerk (应激反应) judgments, my superiority (优越感) from three stories up. My ugly assumptions, I realized, were all about myself. I would never have fixed that fence; I would have panicked and run away.
Years later, I still look out my window at that fence almost every day. It still looks brand new, It makes me wonder what else that man has improved, and how I can make myself more like him.

A.Because he badly damaged the fence.
B.Because he acted rudely and impolitely.

【2】The last two paragraphs tell us that ________.
A.if the writer were the driver, he thought he would do better

C.the driver acted like a hero and had a great influence on the writer
D.the writer looks out his window often and expects to see the driver again

24、In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education (VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard (跷跷板)act, ”he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders. . . and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!” The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
