二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   We are born to dance. Dancing changes the way we feel and think, and increases self-worth.

As a dance psychologist and teacher, I have witnessed the ways dancing has changed the lives of hundreds of people. Then I set up the Dance Psychology Lab so that I could combine my knowledge in psychology with dance, using science to study the relationship between movement and the brain. What I found was extraordinary: people with Parkinson's disease(帕金森病)and dementia(痴呆)getting a new chance to live longeran increase in the self-worth of teenagersreductions in sadness and anxiety in adultsincreases in social bonding between peopleand fundamental changes in the way people think and solve problems. All because of dancing.

Dancing stimulates the link between the body and the brain. The emotional high we get from dancing is due to dopamine(多巴胺).This brain chemical plays a role in how we feel, and low levels are associated with feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, pain and mood swings. Dancing is a great way to overcome these negative feelings because the exercise and our emotional responses to the music we're hearing can increase the release of dopamine in different parts of the brain. As dopamine levels go up, we can shake off some of those negative feelings and float into an excited state.

Scientists suggest that the best time to learn a dance routine is before you go to sleep. This is because the brain builds new knowledge structures while we sleep, and it is these structures that strengthen our ability to learn and remember information.

In our lab experiments, we found that people who did 20 minutes of improvised(即兴的)dancing became more creative when answering creative-thinking tasks. For example, before dancing, participants could generate about four or five alternative uses for a common object such as a brick or a newspaper, but after dancing they could generate seven or eight.

1Why does the author build the Dance Psychology Lab?

A.To change how people think and feel. B.To help people increase their self-worth.

C.To find out different social relationships. D.To study how dancing influences the brain.

2What change does dancing bring in people?

A.Dopamine levels go up. B.Their intelligence is raised.

C.Sleep quality is improved. D.Parkinson's disease and dementia are cured.

3When is the suggested time to learn dance moves?

    A.In the morning. B.Before sleeping.

    C.While working. D.In the evening.

4What do improvised dancing experiments show us?

    A.Dancing helps with our creativity.

    B.Dancing creates more activities.

    C.Dancing attracts more participants.

D.Dancing inspires us to use more objects.

  • 22、As new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting fireworks to light up the sky. But the fireworks could finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.

Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones, “They give out no pollutants, they’re reusable, and there’s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”

Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals — from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. “They’ve often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks,” he said.

But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event.”

And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn’t mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.

【1】Why does the writer talk about the Tokyo Olympics in Para 1?

A.To attract readers’ attention to the Olympics.

B.To advocate setting off fireworks in the new year.

C.To introduce the popular use of drones for light shows.

    A.They bring environmental problems.

B.They cause little suffering to the pets.

C.They add color to the new year celebration.

    D.They are economical and environmentally-friendly.

【3】Which of the following did Hans Rosling agree with?

A.Firework displays last shorter than drone displays.

B.The pollution from fireworks isn’t as much as people think.

C.Drones have less impact on the environment than fireworks.

D.People should abandon the drone displays because of lithium batteries.

【4】What are people’s attitudes towards drone light displays?

    A.Controversial.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Neutral.

  • 24、The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.

Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.

Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized”. Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.

The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”

“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”

Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

1From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was elected the president of Student’s Union, everybody congratulated me on my campaign saying it was one of the best the school had seen. Our principal assigned me my first mission in my political career—raising money to build a coffeehouse on the campus. I was thrilled and ambitious about it.

Having determined my goal, I set up a small group of helpers to do fundraising. One of them was Gary.

He had a reputation for being super active and energetic. You could easily pick him out during the lunch break for he was always enjoying himself by throwing Frisbees (飞盘) to someone just passing by. But meanwhile, he was extraordinarily clever and eloquent (雄辩的). As the leader of the Debating Club, he never had any losses. When I humbly asked him to join the fundraising group, he raised his eyebrows, obviously, he didn’t expect someone so serious as I would invite someone so playful as him. At my insistence, he finally agreed.

Clearly, I was right about him. Gary persuaded dozens of students into donating. He helped me organize our group meetings, discussing and distributing tasks in great detail. When the team members met obstacles and lost heart on the edge of giving up, he made the best of his humor to cheer everyone up. Gradually, all of us who participated felt like we were part of something much bigger than we were. We were building a community and it felt great.

They say “absolute power corrupts (腐败) absolutely”. It sure did in my case. There was I, one of the most-liked guys on campus, powerful and making a difference, until my ego took over and destroyed everything. I let all the power go to my head. My arrogance and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to my group members, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. I believed that I could accomplish this mission without any of them and I wanted to take credit for everything. Gary tried to convince me that I had changed, and that I was abusing my position, but I wasn’t listening.
